Unit Test
Topic Quizzes
Projects
Brief Description
This will be a written test at the end
of the unit. It will cover all the
material within the unit related to
the GLOs and SLOs. This will be
graded for marks based on the
outcomes. Students will have a
chance to reassess if needed (Oral
assessment, retesting students)
There will be two topic quizzes
throughout the unit. They will be a
written test. The first Topic Quiz will
cover topics 1 & 2. The second Topic
Quiz will cover topics 3, 4 & 5. The
other Topics will be assessed using
labs, projects, or formative
questions. This will be graded for
marks based on the outcomes.
Students will have a chance to
reassess if needed (alternate
assignment, retest, oral exam).
Every Monday, students will be
working on a project for the full
morning (3 hours). During this
project time they will research
traditional structures, build an angry
bird tower to withstand forces & the
environment, and create a moving
structure with joints/materials. One
will be formatively assessed, and
two will be summatively assessed.
My formative assessment will guide
students in how to follow a rubric
and how to write a reflection based
on the project. This will guide them
into how to do their summative
project the next week and they will
have feedback to help them know
where to go with learning. A
majority of the grade for the
projects will be based on a reflection

Topic 2: Describing Structures. Students will learn how structures are planned and
designed using function, aesthetics, safety, materials, and joints. (K1.2, K1.3, K3.1,
K3.2, K3.3, K3.4, K4.3)

Topic 3: Mass and Forces. Students will learn about masses and weights, forces,
drawing forces and how to measure forces. (K2.1)
Recognize and use units of force and mass, and identify and measure forces
and loads
Topic 4: Forces, Loads, and Stresses. Students will learn about external forces,
internal forces, and how they can cause structures to fail. (K2.3)
Topic 5: How Structures Fail. Students will learn about how forces act on a
structure and cause it to fail and will learn about how engineers view potential
problems and design strong, durable structures. (K1.5, K4.2)

Structures and Forces

Identify points of failure and modes of failure in natural and built structures
(e.g., potential failure of a tree under snow load, potential failure of an
overloaded bridge)
Identify environmental factors that may affect the stability and safety of a
structure, and describe how these factors are taken into account (e.g.,
recognize that snow load, wind load and soil characteristics need to be taken
into account in the building designs; describe example design adaptations
used in earthquake-prone regions)
Topic 6: Designing with Forces. Students will learn how to distribute the load
throughout, direct forces in structures, and shape parts of structures to withstand
forces. (K2.2, K2.4, K2.5, K4.1, K4.2)
Identify examples of frictional forces and their use in structures (e.g., friction
of a nail driven into wood, friction of pilings or footings in soil, friction of
stone laid on stone)
Analyze a design and identify properties of materials that are important to
individual parts of the structure (e.g., recognize that cables can be used as a
component of structures where only tensile forces are involved; recognize
that beams are subject to tension on one side and compression on the other;
recognize that flexibility is important in some structures)
Infer how the stability of a model structure will be affected by changes in the
distribution of mass within the structure and by changes in the design of its
foundation (e.g., infer how the stability of a structure will be affected by
increasing the width of its foundation)
Demonstrate and describe methods to increase the strength of materials
through changes in design (e.g., corrugation of surfaces, lamination of
adjacent members, changing the shape of components, changing the
method of fastening)
Identify environmental factors that may affect the stability and safety of a
structure, and describe how these factors are taken into account (e.g.,
recognize that snow load, wind load and soil characteristics need to be taken
into account in the building designs; describe example design adaptations
used in earthquake-prone regions)
Topic 7: Stable Structures. Students will learn how to design stable structures and
how to take into account the center of gravity of a structure. (K2.5, K4.1, K4.2)
Infer how the stability of a model structure will be affected by changes in the
distribution of mass within the structure and by changes in the design of its
foundation (e.g., infer how the stability of a structure will be affected by
increasing the width of its foundation)
