Literacy Scavenger Hunt
1. Literacy is knowledge of particular skills, or contexts, and being literate is the ability to
read and write, and to also be able to apply knowledge about those basic skills.
Mechanics, teachers, professors, authors, musicians and even athletes are literate. Since
literate classifies for people who can read and write, I am literate, since I can read and
write.
2. U.S. History
1. Give the epochs into which U.S. History is divided. The French War of the Republic
1745-1782. The War of 1812, 1812-1828. Slavery and the Mexican War, 1840-1860.
Civil War 1860- 1865. The Reconstruction Period 1865- 1877. Our Recent Times 1900Now.
2. Give an account of the discovery of America by Columbus. Christopher Columbus
sailed in 3 boats and came to America, but thought he was in India, and called everybody
Indians.
3. Relate the causes and results of the Revolutionary War. Causes- oppression of
Americans to British power, and ended up Americans having their own freedom through
the States.
4. Show the territorial growth of the United States. First we gained 13 colonies, then we
traveled to the western states, and then we owned Hawaii and Alaska.
5. Tell what you can of the history of Kansas.
6. Describe three of the most prominent battles of the Rebellion. Lexington Concord,
Battle of Saratoga, and Siege of Yorktown.

7. Who were the following: Morse, Whitney, Fulton, Bell, Lincoln, Penn, and Howe?
Lincoln was the 16th president of the USA, and ended slavery with the emancipation
proclamation. He was assassinated April 15, 1865.
8. Name events connected with the following dates: 1607, 1620, 1800, 1849, and 1865.
1607- Jamestown was founded. 1620- Pilgrims arrived in America. 1800- French war.
1849- Elizabeth Blackwell becomes first woman physician. 1865- Abraham Lincoln is
assassinated.
These questions show that the definition of literacy has definitely changed, since back
then inane questions, that nobody knew the answers to were asked, as today most of us
have to look up the answers, making it easier. Literacy has evolved past knowing
answers to unusual questions, because today the topic is more relevant. However,
literacy is the same because knowing these particular topics is being literate, like in
todays world. The categories today would be celebrities, technology, musicians, and the
internet. Overall, the knowledge of recent events today is stronger due to media, but the
people of today are not as active, or are not as harder workers as people from other times,
due to the technology we have today.
3. The test given to black voters in 1960 were designed to have nobody pass, as these
questions are insanely difficult. Segregation and other racists acts were put into play in
the 1960s, as this was not a time of acceptance for blacks. The government did not want
blacks to pass the exam so they could not vote, and this time period eventually led to the
civil rights movement.
