Nutrition Education Presentation Summary

Assessment of audience
The audience for this presentation was individuals who are participating in the medical
weight loss program at IU Ball Memorial Medical Weight Loss Center. All of the participants in
the medical weight loss program are following the same diet format. The majority of the
participants consume three meal replacement beverages and one bar as a snack each day. They
may be at different points in their weight loss journey, but the information still applies to all
participants at the meeting. The Participants are required to go to class once a week. Each week
there is a specific topic to cover and the topics rotated through nutrition, exercise and behavior
focuses. The background of the individuals varies with age, education level, careers ect.
Knowing this I tried to make the presentation fairly simple so everyone could comprehend the
information.
Content/Key messages
When I was putting together the presentation I used the information that the weight loss
center gives patients that are transitioning out of the reducing phase as resources. I feel that this
was a reliable source because this is the information they provide patients. In this particular
presentation I talked about transitioning from a ketogenic diet or the reducing phase with all
meal replacements to a grocery food diet. I used a PowerPoint to explain the transition/
maintenance process. Many individual were not to this point yet, but it gets them thinking about
the process. They will also know what to expect once they get to their goal weight. Throughout
the presentation I tried to use several examples and I had them participate at one point. I thought
using a variety of methods would really help get the message across to the whole audience.

Focus on consumer/ audience
When preparing the PowerPoint I focused on including information that would help them
to better understand how their diet would change when they were finished with the action phase
of the weight loss plan. When a patient transitions to the next phase, one of the dietitians sits
down with patient and explains the process again in more detail. I think that this also helps to
calm some of the participants anxiety about going back to grocery food. Many participants have
said that the maintenance is the difficult part, not the reducing phase with meal replacements.
This presentation is meant to get them to think about the future and how they will personally
handle the transition and maintenance process.
Assessment of the audience
I assessed effectiveness of the presentation by asking questions and having the patients
participate a little throughout. At the end of the presentation, I had the participants put together a
sample meal with the guidelines that were covered in the presentation. There were several
classes that I presented to; I thought I was more effective in some classes compared to others. I
think I was more effective if classes were more willing to participate.
Assessment Of Presentation
I was actually able to do this presentation four times because they have two class times
on Tuesday and three class times on Wednesday. I thought that I did well explaining and expand
on the information. I thought that my presentation skills improved each time I gave the
presentation. Some weaknesses are that I looked at the screen behind me a little too much, so
people may not have heard me as well. Some classes were easier to engage than others, so I need
try to improve on engaging the classes that hesitate to participate as much.
