Scholarly Research Study Summary
This article discusses research conducted at a large school district in
northeastern Georgia to determine if educational leadership styles
impact work performance and staff morale.
This research looked at 5 components on the Leadership Practices
Inventory survey. These components are model the way, inspire shared
vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the
heart. With the focus on student achievement, some principals
disregard and devalue school employees abilities and opinions (p. 89).
The teacher and support staff participants considered the leadership
style of principals as a contributing factor to the work performance of
school members (p.92). Teachers and support staff agreed that
leadership influenced staff morale (93). If the leaders of a school
exhibited the 5 components of leadership, the higher the staffs work
performance and morale (p.93). They found that communication,
relationships, and enjoyment of education contributed to the
commitment of school employees. Open-mindedness, approachability,
and knowledge were also seen as important characteristics for leaders
to have.
