Annotated Bibliography Based on Research Questions
About Women Journalists
Enda, Jodi. "Women Journalists See Progress, But Not Nearly Enough." Nieman Reports 56.1
(2002): 67. Academic Search Complete. Web. 23 Oct. 2016.
This article explains how women journalists are progressing but still are at a disadvantage
in the workplace. Different story topics are brought to attention since women journalists
have stepped in the workplace; but few readers still see them as only housewives. The
article also talks about how when trying to cover soft stories (child abuse and welfare) the
male editors will oppose. The reason for this could turn the all-white male readers from
no longer reading the newspaper. It also mentions the startup of JAWS (Journalism &
Women Symposium), which supports growth of women journalists and the portrayal of
society. Reasons are given how men respond when women get jobs versus them and why
they will not hire women reporters. This article is important to my research because it
points out the diversity and change women journalists bring as well as the obstacles
women journalists face.
"Giving Female Journalists A Voice In Developing Nations." Columbia Journalism Review 53.3
(2014): 12. Academic Search Complete. Web. 23 Oct. 2016.
Zubeida Mustafa, a Pakistani journalist, shares in this interview the obstacles women
reporters and reporters in general face in her country. An organization called Global
Voices teams up with her to help get the voices of Pakistani journalists heard in other

countries. Mustafa covers stories about the women in her country who have struggled and
how they have survived it. She also gives two key points on how women journalists
stories are different and somewhat better in a sense. This interview is relevant to my
research because it gives insight into countries other than the United States in dealing
with journalists as a whole. It also points out an important statement how men and
women journalists can both be in danger, not just women.
Kyung-Hee, Kim. "Obstacles To The Success Of Female Journalists In Korea." Media, Culture
& Society 28.1 (2006): 123-141.Academic Search Complete. Web. 23 Oct. 2016.
This Korea-based article depicts the obstacles women journalists in Korea face and how
they are overcoming it. The article mentions how the increase is not in female reporters
but in the need for soft stories. Likewise in saying, how women get no hard stories and
the reason for this is because there are few female media producers. The article brings up
how gender restraints in newsrooms are the result from patriarchal and capitalist
structures. In addition, it states the traditional view of women and how they affect women
reporters. This article is important to be my research because it shows women journalists
in another country; in particular a country that is very strict on certain issues. It also goes
into great detail to explain these obstacles, giving the reader a better understanding.

movie shows the challenges the reporters faced in order to gain access to the war. The

website also highlights women reporters who were able to report stories from the
frontline of the war and make headlines of the newspapers. There is also a timeline of
important events that showcase women journalists challenges before, during, and after
the war. This website is important to my research because it gives knowledge of a certain
event that happened in the United States and how women reporters fought for the
coverage and won.
Womack, Helen. "Response To Women Reporting Conflict: Reflections On No Woman's Land:
On The Frontline With Female Reporters." Feminist Media Studies 13.1 (2013): 170172. Academic Search Complete. Web. 23 Oct. 2016.
This article not only gives the viewpoint of women journalists but also mentions male
journalists. It says how in some cases women do report manly stories and how mens
lives are in danger as well. The article points out how women have disadvantages to
reporting but also advantages. In addition, tips to journalists in reporting on stories in
other countries are mentioned. In the end it makes the statement that both men and
women are affected in this profession. This article is relevant to my research because it
tells how women can report major stories and how men can have disadvantages in this
profession, too.
