Grade/Subject: Psychology 20 Unit: The Life Span Lesson Duration: 72 minutes


LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Describe the physical and perceptual development of newborns and children
2. Discuss the development of language in humans.
3. Discuss the development of Language in animals.

Observations: Throughout the entirety of the lesson
the teacher will be formatively assessing what they
hear and see throughout the class.

Key Questions: How was language developed? How do


animals communicate? How do children physically develop?
How do children perceptually develop?

Written/Performance Assessments: Students will be working on an assignment from the chapter in question.

PROCEDURE
Introduction ( 5 min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: Brain Teaser #11 (3 minutes)
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: The responses from my interest inventory will act as a prior knowledge assessment
for this class.
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: Students are expected to take chances and explore theoretical and practical
elements found within psychology. Students should feel safe to ask and answer questions with no fear of having a
wrong answer.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: The advanced organizer will always be on the board for students to see what is coming in
todays lesson. This agenda will either be on my white board or electronically though the projector.

Body (67 min.):


Learning Activity #1: Language and Animals Videos: There are two separate videos that I will be showing during
this class where we will be able to begin looking into how animals communicate between each other as well as with
humans. This first video is serious and goes in depth into the different concepts with different animals. The second
short video is a cute one to lighten the mood after a harder video to watch. (20 minutes)
Learning Activity #2: Language and animals discussion: After the video we will be ensuring that we gained a basic
understanding of what we were expected to gain from them and using guided questions we will partake in a class
discussion on this topic. (20 mins)
Learning Activity #3: Language and animals Experts Research: For the remainder of class we will be focussing on
specific animals and the way they communicate with each others as well as humans. We will be breaking into at least 4
specialist groups who will research the different animals (Gorilla, Dolphin etc..) and how they communicate. (35 mins)

Closure ( 5 min.):

Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: The assignment which has been handed in will act as proof of learning for this
class/activity.
Feedback From Students: Students will always have the opportunity to talk to me when and if needed and will also
have frequent exit slips which allow them to anonymously give suggestions or ask for certain ways of teaching.
Feedback To Students: Every class will conclude with feedback to my students verbally. Descriptive feedback will also
be given on all assignments.
