b)

A crane hook has a capacity of 30kN and is of circular cross-section of 30mm

diameter. Its inner fibre radius is 75mm. It is to be replaced by a hook of rectangular

A car weighing 9000 N empty has a seating capacity of 5 passengers each weighing
600 N. It has a wheel base of 2000 mm has its center of gravity 110 mm behind the
front axle. The car is to be supported on 4 similar long semi-elliptical carriage
springs of each 840 mm between shackle pins. Design a suitable spring using a
factor of safety of 1.5 on the proof stress of 0.84 GPa. The static loads are to be
multiplied by a load factor 2.5 to allow the impact load. The maximum deflection of
the leaves equal to 50 mm. Number of full length leaves are 2 and graduated length
leaves 8.Take E=210 GPa.

b)

Discuss equalization of stresses in leaf springs

UNIT 2
3.

a)

In a multi plate friction clutch, the radial width of the friction material is to be 1/5th
of the maximum radius. The coefficient of friction is 0.25.
i) How many disks are required to transmit 60 KW at 3000 rpm? The
maximum clutch diameter can not exceed 250 mm. The axial force is limited
to 600 N.
ii) What is the mean unit pressure on each contact surface?

b)

A simple band brake of drum diameter 600 mm has a band passing over it with an
angle of contact of 2700. While one end is connected to the fulcrum at the end of the
lever, the other end is connected to the brake lever at a distance of 125 mm from the
fulcrum. The brake lever is 750 mm long. The brake is to absorb a power of 35 KW
at 200 rpm. Coefficient of friction is 0.25. Determine
(i) The minimum effort necessary & the direction of rotation?
(ii) Find the width of 2.4 mm thick steel band if the maximum tensile stress is not to
exceed 55 Mpa

UNIT 3
4.

a)

Derive an expression for beam strength of a spur gear tooth with standard notations.

b)

Obtain the dimensions of a helical gear to transmit 12kW at 2400rpm of pinion. The
velocity ratio required is 4:1, helix angle is 230. The centre distance is to be around
300 mm. Pressure angle in the normal plane is 14 0 involute. Pinion material is
cast steel ASTM Class B with an allowable static bending stress of 51.70MPa. Gear
material is cast iron better grade with an allowable static bending stress of
31.00Mpa. Take Cs=1.25.

pinion. The speed reduction is 3.5. Use14 0 full depth tooth system. The pinion is
made of alloy steel of case hardened (SAE2320) and gear is 0.20%C heat treated.
