Duration: 3 Hours
Max Marks: 100
Date: 04.03.2014
Instructions: Answer FIVE FULL questions, choosing one from each unit.

1.

UNIT-1
List the assumptions made in the analysis of a curved beam subjected to pure
bending.
b) A T -section frame for a punch press is shown in Figure. I. Determine the capacity
of the press if the maximum stress in the frame is not to exceed 60 N/mm2

a) Design a helical compression spring for a safety valve. The valve must blow off at
a pressure of 1.2 Mpa & should lift by 3 mm for 5% increase in pressure. The
valve diameter is 60 mm. The maximum allowable shear stress is 400 MN/m2 &
the modulus of rigidity is 82.7 GPa. Take spring index as 8.
b) A locomotive spring has an overall length of 1100 mm and sustains a load of 75
kN at its centre. The spring has 3 full length leaves and 15 graduated leaves with a
central band 100 mm width. All the leaves are to be stressed to 0.4 Gpa when fully
loaded. The ratio of total spring depth to width is 2. Determine (i) Width &
thickness of leaves (ii) nip or clearance to be provided (iii) Load exerted on the
band by the clip bolt after assembly. Take E=206.8 Gpa.

UNIT-2
3.

a) The following data is given for a dry single plate clutch. Power 18.5kW, rated
speed 1500rpm, the outer radius is 1.5 times the inner radius. The friction
material has coefficient of friction of 0.25 and bearing pressure of 0.07MPa. Find
i) Mean radius and radial width of the friction faces, (ii) dimensions of the clutch
plate.
b) The brake shown in Fig. 2 is fitted with a C.I brake shoe with a coefficient of
friction 0.3. The breaking torque is to be 346 N-m;
(i)
Determine the force, P for counter clockwise rotation.
(ii)
Determine the force, p with clockwise rotation.
(iii)
Where the pivot must be placed to make the brake self locking with
counter clockwise direction.

UNIT-3
a) Derive an expression for formative number ofteeth of a helical gear.
b) Design a pair of spur gears to transmit 25 kW from a shaft rotating at 1200 rpm to
a parallel shaft rotating at 400 rpm. Assume 20 stub teeth with minimum number
of teeth on the pinion as 20. Material for pinion is C45steel untreated and that for
the gear is Cast steel 0.2% untreated. Check for dynamic and wear considerations.
OR
a) Derive an expression for beam strength of spur gear tooth.
b) Design a pair of bevel gears to transmit 15 kW at 300 rpm of the gear and 1470
rpm of the pinion. The angle between the shaft axes is 90. The pinion has 20 teeth
and the material for the gears is cast steel with a static bending strength of 180
MPa. Taking service factor as 1.25 check the gears for dynamic and wear loads.

Journal speed = 1500 rpm
Journal diameter= bearing length= 50 mm

Visccrity of oil = 25 cp, ratio of journal diameter to diameterial clearance = 1000

Assume that the total heat generated in the bearing is carried away by total oil
flow in the bearing. Calculate:
(i)
Coefficient of friction.
(ii)
Power loss in friction.
(iii)
Minimum film thickness.
(iv)
Flow requirement.
(v) Temperature rise.

7.

UNIT-5
a) Derive the expression for ratio of tensions for the flat belt
b) Select a V - belt drive for transmitting 4kW power at 1500rpm to a blower of an
air conditioner unit to be run at 500rpm. Take the centre distance between the
shafts as 500mm. Neglect the effect of slip and assume light duty and continuous
service of the air conditioner
