A simple band brake of drum diameter 600mm has a band passing over it with 10
an angle of contact of 225 , while one end is connected to the fulcrum, the
other end is connected to the brake lever at a distance of 400mm from the
fulcrum. The brake lever is 1m long. The brake is to absorb a power of 15Kw at
720rpm. Design the brake lever of rectangular cross section, assuming depth to
be thrice the width. Take allowable stress 80Mpa. Take J-1.=0.3
UNIT 3
4.
a)
Derive an expression for bca..'Il strength of a spur gear tooth with standard
notations.
b)
A compressor receives power of 30Kw through a pair of spur gears. The speed
of motor is 1450rpm and that of compressor shaft is 350 rpm. The power
transmission is with moderate shocks and operates continuously. Pinion is made
of C 45 Steel (cr0=210Mpa) and gear of C 40 Steel (cr0=160Mpa). Select the
number of teeth in such a way that the drive is compact and velocity ratio should
not deviate. The hardness for pinion and gear are 300BHN and 250BHN
respectively. Check for dynamic and wear loads.

b)
Two steel Bevel gears connect shafts at 90, the pinion has a surface hardness of
300BHN and the gear has a surface hardness of200BHN. The tooth profile is to
be of the 14.5 full depth involute and the module is 4mm. The number of teeth
on the pinion is 30 and the gear has 48 teeth. The face width is 40mm.
Determine the wear strength of the pair. What would be the power that can be
transmitted based on the above wear strength if the pinion rotates at 1440rpm
Take E for steel=206.8 GPa.

UNIT 4
6.
a)
With usual notations and a neat sketch, derive an expression for coefficient of 8
friction in a lightly loaded journal bearing. State clearly the assumptions made.
b)
Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump running at 1200 rpm. Load on
bearing is 15 KN and the operating pressure is 1 MPa. Take bearing temperature
50C and ambient temperature 30C. Find whether artificial cooling is required.
