Understanding journal article structure and writing a language
analysis paper are very useful skills. These skills are important for graduate
pathway students to achieve their success in their academic life. They can
identify how the author uses the language to convince the readers about
certain issues or ideas using deferent techniques. This paper will analyze the
article of Taxis as Recourse Options for Ridesharing Services (Vodopivec,
Tobias, Hooks, Schonfeld, and Mohebbi, 2015) into three parts: first, the
language features. second, the use of specialized vocabulary and third the
language grammar uses and the summary.
First, I will base my analysis upon a close examination for the
author's language uses. It seems the authors use a formal type of writing
because the authors wrote the purpose of paper by saying This paper
investigates the effectiveness of routes and schedules created under a
deterministic travel time assumption ( Vodopivec, Tobias, Hooks, Schonfeld,
and Mohebbi, 2015, p. 86). In order to show the efficient of this research
paper without using (I) pronoun. So they evaluate this paper, and they use
this technique to show the significant of this paper. Even more, the authors
did not use the passive sentences, because they tryied to engage and
convince the readers with their active evidence. For example, the authors
said, Various studies investigate uncertainties associated with stochastic

behavior on the part of the customers (p. 86), which is in active voice to
present their engagement in pursuing advanced studies. According to this
article, Ridesharing services commonly offered at airports and to mobilityimpaired persons exist worldwide (p. 86). The authors use the adverb in the
middle of the sentences to make their writing in formal shape to show the
readers how it is a universal service as services in the airports. I think the
sentences become more interesting to read when the adverbs are placed in
the middle. Also, the authors did not write the direct question to mention
about their driving question many times in different ways. One of these ways
as an example, the authors Vodopivec, Tobias, Hooks, Schonfeld, and
Mohebbi (2015) said, Numerical experiments were performed to determine
the possible benefits of using a taxi recourse option (p. 91). As a result, I
can understand that they said can taxis help to improve ridesharing services.
The uses of informal negative writing in this paper are little, such as Although
theroutesarecreatedunderdeterministicassumptions,theyareimplementedinanenvironment
forwhichimportantcharacteristics cannot beknowndeterministicallyinadvance (p. 91).
Furthermore, the authors used long sentences in this article, it seems the
authors were trying to describe many information or the significant and the
great value of this paper. You can check the long quotation above for
negative formality. Also, it means the authors are not choppy in presenting
their idea or facts.
Second, the authors use many symbolisms. They use the sense
words such as the words (foresight, insight) in this article These routes and

schedules are typically created by using the assumption of perfect foresight

about future travel times (p. 86). Moreover, The analysis of baseline
performance measures for each recourse policy provides some insight into
their possible benefits (p. 86). In order to represent their sight of looking
forward future point. Additionally, the word recovery in this article Such a
recovery type of approach, although employed in existing business practices
in various locations, has received very little consideration in the literature
(p. 87), to regaining the lost and take it away by using different approaches.
Even more, the authors use the word stringent in this article While
minimizing cost is a typical objective of the operator, the DARP differs from
other vehicle routing problems in that it has stringent constraints to enforce
the required quality of service provided to passengers (p. 86), to show the
stringent necessity and the strict of this paper to enforce the quality
services. Also, the word constraints refer to the limitation for solving Linear
Programing Problems in my discipline.
From all of these uses of strict and senses words, I think the writers are
sharing their viewpoints and positions with readers.
Third, I will discuss the dependent and independent clauses. The
authors in this article used many dependent and independent clauses. For
example, the authors wrote: Ridesharing vehicles that transport the mobility
impaired are equipped with lifts for persons with wheel- chairs (p.86). which
is a independent clause and it can stand alone. Independent clause can
stand alone and have premodifiers before it, and postmodifiers come after

the independent clause. There are different types of modifiers such as an

adverb, independent clause, prepositional, and verb phrase. Even more, the
dependent

clause

functions

are

the

adverb,

noun,

and

adjective.

Furthermore, we can combine two independent clauses by adverb modifiers

such as (however). Also, we can combine it by using dependent clauses. We
can

use

punctuations

such

as

terminal

punctuation

(?,!,.),

comma,

coordinating punctuations (:, ;) to connect independent clause to show the

relationship between two independent clauses. Additionally, the determiner
shows the quality and quantity of the nouns, and it refers to specific things.
For example, Toevaluatetheroutescreated,experimentswererunonarealworlddataset
involving427customersrequestingservicewithinRichmond,Virginia,forasingleweekdayin
Octoberof2012(p.88). There are four types of determiners these are articles,
demonstratives, possessive pronouns, quantities, and the possessive noun
phrase. Furthermore, I would like to discuss noun phrases. Nouns can help us
to identify people, things, and information. For example, Theleastcostinsertion
heuristicwasrunontheRichmonddatasetwiththeassumptionthattraveltimeswereknown
deterministically (p. 89). A noun phrase can also have pre-modifiers such as
determiners, adjectives, and post-modifiers such as prepositional phrase and
relative clause.
In conclusion, these formal language techniques that are used in this
paper attempt to attract a special group of people who are interested and
looking forward to advance the future of Civil and Infrastructure Engineering.
Therefore, it is very clear that the formality of using the formality rule in this

paper encouraged the reader to share the ideas and facts with authors view
and make it an acceptable research.
