Journal Article Analysis
Graduate Pathway students are asked to analyze a journal article from their
major to expand their horizon by exploring their major and learning more
about it. Reading journal articles and analyzing it will help them learn the
format of writing their research in the future. Moreover, they will know which
journals are better and well-known. For this assignment, I will focus on the
article of Taxis as a Recourse Option for Ridesharing Services. I will analyze
the rhetorical elements, how the research is presented, how data are
included, the three movies, and the overall structure for the article.
While reading and analyzing the article of Taxis as a Recourse Option
for Ridesharing Services, I identify the object of the study is ridesharing as a
door to door service intended to serve many passengers. This study focuses
on serving people with disabilities. Unlike shared rides or taxis mean higher
productivity for operators and lower cost for passengers. It seems these
benefits for both passengers and operators can be managed during the
efficient time. In this regard, the authors mention about an existing study of
Luo and Schonfeld (2011), when they developed solving of large scale real
world instances by enforcing the required quality of services to passengers.
The exigence of this study is based on problems faced by actual ridesharing

providers, because ridesharing created by using the assumption of perfect

future travel time. However, vehicles may encounter traffic congestion and
be delayed. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to explore the
effectiveness of schedules and routes for ridesharing that created under
deterministic travel time assumption. Driving question for this article is how
can taxis help to improve ridesharing services. The scope of this study is in
particular costumers within a set time window, and it was examined from
both the ridesharing company and the customers. From these real case
studies, the relevance can be significant for operators, because it offers a
mechanism to avoid wasteful schedules. Also, it provides insight into future
operation, alternative recourse options for moving customers. Moreover, it is
a recourse option for passengers who are likely to be picked up late.
The research on this article are presented from many experiments
performed on a real study with data from paratransit companies serving
customers in Richmond and Virginia included graphs and paragraphs form.
Additionally, the existing studies are performed as a summary.
I characterize the three moves from the introduction of this article.
First, 1(a) movie is to show the importance of this research, according to
Vodopivec,

Tobias,

Miller-Hooks,

Mohebbi

and

Schonfeld

(2015),

the

Ridesharing services are a common worldwide services in the airports.

Second, move 1 (b) is to show the previous study. The authors stated based
on various insertion techniques [e.g., Luo and Schonfeld (4)], tabu search

[e.g., Metro Access (5)], etc. have been developed to solve larger-scale, realworld instances ( Vodopivec, Tobias, Miller-Hooks, Mohebbi and Schonfeld,
2015, p. 86). Third, move (2) where the authors Vodopivec, Tobias, MillerHooks, Mohebbi, and Schonfeld, (2015) stated Despite this, very few
methods reflect the realities of the operating environment in which they are
applied. Various studies investigate uncertainties associated with stochastic
behavior on the part of the customer (p. 86). Finally, move three is where
the authors (2015) wrote the purpose This paper investigates the
effectiveness of routes and schedules created by a ridesharing company
under the assumption that travel times are known deterministically (p.87).
Also, part (b) move 3 is the structure of the study. According to Vodopivec,
Tobias, Miller-Hooks, Mohebbi and Schonfeld (2015): Following are three
approaches for addressing travel-time uncertainties: (1) explicitly capturing
uncertainty in the model, (2) under- or overestimating parameters to force
slack into the schedules, and (3) planning for recovery when schedules
cannot be met during their implementation. assumption that travel times are
known deterministically. (p. 87). Lastly, part c from move three is where the
authors clarify the finding for this study,(2014) Results of these real case
studies revealed that such an assumption can lead to significant service
quality

constraint

violations, and

that

accounting

for

uncertainty

is

necessary(p. 87).
In conclusion, the overall article's structure follows the introduction to
Dail-Ride

planning

and

Ridesharing,

Methods

for

the

experimental

framework, results, and discussion. This paper explored a different approach

when it determines assumption in routing by study the effects on quality of
services and how companies can respond. Dynamically assigning passengers
to taxis when other ridesharing vehicles are behind schedules, and can
improve

ridesharing

quality.

Moreover,

the

authors

evaluate

current

ridesharing, and explore how they can benefit from a taxis recourse option.
Therefore, they investigate this research from broad as a common services
at the airports to the ways of how taxis can help to the broad again when
they talked about the relevance and the suggestion from this research.
