High School Track and Field 3

Coaching Philosophy
My objective as a coach is to better the athletes in their events in track and field
during their time in high school but also to raise up respectable, hardworking leaders
who can take what they do on the track into their lives outside of the sport. I strive to
promote respect among players, coaches, and staff alike which allows for comradery
and the ability to grow. I want my athletes to be pushed and guided by use of the
coaching staff but also their teammates throughout their high school career to have
accomplished their potential and learned how to work hard towards a goal.
While a thriving track and field record is good, academics comes first and should
not be put on the back burner in comparison to their sport career. I believe that grades
of my athletes are important and they need to be passing all of their classes to be able
to fully participate and compete in competitions. If a situation arises with a conflict
between the sport and their school work, if a compromise cannot be reached the
academia comes first and is the top priority.
My goals for my athletes are for them to develop leadership and to be able to put
hard work and effort into what they do, not only on the track but in all areas of their lives.
I want them to be able to see the results of their hard work and want to strive to reach
their potential.
I believe that a coach is there to direct and push the athletes to their potential.
With this I strive to promote the athlete putting in the most at every practice that is
asked of them. They know their limits and it is my role as a coach to develop them and

High School Track and Field 4

encourage them to work to their full potential. The sport should be enjoyed and they
shouldnt be dreading coming to practice but at the same time I believe it shouldnt be
something easy and laidback. I want my athletes to understand the workouts and why
they run that way, also for them to feel free to voice their opinions and how they are
feeling about the work outs.
I believe high school track is only a small phase in life but there is much that be
learned in respect to it. I want my athletes to have experienced and grown in seeing that
hard work and commitment will show results and that leadership and working together
show great benefit.

High School Track and Field 5

Practice Philosophy
Practice is a time for the athletes to be conditioned and building up speed,
endurance, and proper form. It gives the workouts to strengthen both their muscular
system and cardiovascular system. Also it allows for team unity to be formed as they
work out together over the season. In the practice the coaches are available to critique
and better the athletes more one on one than if they were only running meets. Without
practice the players wont be able to recover, nor will they be able to reach their full
potential through work outs and the knowledge and guidance of the coaching staff.
Coaching during practice is to be leading the athletes in a proper progression of work
outs to be able to reach their potential. To be stern with directions but also be
encouraging and willing to work with and understand how the athletes are feeling about
their workouts. They should be approachable and the athletes should feel comfortable
in asking for help or opinions to better their running.
Practices will begin after school gets done, since it is a high school team, they
shall meet at 3:00 pm. This allows for time to change and go to the trainer if injuries
need to be addressed. It begins with a meeting to go over meet results and also any
upcoming events to inform the athletes of. They will then go outside and complete a 2
lap warm up around the stadium, and go onto the infield and do active warm up. They
shall then split into field events, sprinters, distance, and hurdlers to do their individual
work outs which the assistant coaches help lead. After they complete their work out for
the day theyll stretch and head out for the day. The athletes are required to lift at least
twice a week, doing the workout routine provided and anything else they so choose do.

High School Track and Field 6

This can be done either in a weight class during school hours or done after practice.
Having this allows for them to strengthen beyond just running in practice and will help
their form as well. They are held accountable for their own lifting and it wont be
monitored. Practice will usually last until around 4:30 to 5:00. Outside of the normal
weekly practices, weekend workouts will be offered when/if coaches are available.
Assistant coaches will be in charge of running the events they specialize in. They
will help to make the line ups for meets and design workouts. They need to be able to
collaborate with all the coaches and make sure that the athletes are able to try other
events if they are interested but also recognizing the potential of the athletes to strive in
different events. They will help lead warm ups and keep athletes organized during
meets.

High School Track and Field 7

Team Policies
1. Practice is every week day, beginning at 3:20 pm. Weekend practices may be
option with times that the weight room is available, depending on the availability
of the coaches, but not required for anyone.
2. Be on time to practice and be ready to fully participate
a. Proper attire for the weather
b. Already been to the trainer if injuries need to be addressed (taping, etc.)
3. Four captains selected, preferably one from each group (distance, sprints, field,
throwers)
a. Selected by the coaching staff: has been found to have leadership skills, is
respected by other team mates, leads by example in practice as well as
meets, is an upper classman
b. Helps hand-out important papers, be involved in community opportunities,
attend parent meeting at the beginning of the season, help with daily
meetings
4. If the student is absent for the school day they are excused from practice, if they
are there for the second half of the day they should be attending practice.
Appointments should be talked over with coach beforehand so that they know the
athlete will be missing from practice. If student is skipping the majority of
practices, discipline may be taken in suspending from running a meet need to
be willing to put in the work to run races.
5. Injured players need to notify coach and be in contact with the trainer. If not able
to run, they should be biking in the weight room as to keep in shape. If unable to
run the season, or takes them out for a significant period of time, the athlete may
ask to be a team manager.
6. Team managers will help coaches in setting up for practice, distributing
information to the team, helping at meets.

High School Track and Field 8

7. Athletes should be arriving as a team to the meet and should stay until the meet
is done. If not able to stay or shall be coming late, coach needs to be notified and
with good reason. Away meets the athletes should all ride the buses together to
the meet. If they are to drive separation either to or from, separate from the bus,
they must notify coach so that they are not being left behind.
8. All athletes should be passing classes and if grades are not above at a C or
above the athlete will not be running in a meet until grade is improved. If there
are discipline issues in the classroom, coach may suspend from the athlete from
running a meet.
9. If the student is caught drinking/partying, they shall be suspended from running
the meet and parents shall be contacted.

Code of Conduct

Put in your best effort every practice and every meet.

Show respect and good sportsmanship to every person you come in contact with.
Push not only yourself but your teammates as well.
Encourage, dont bring other down with derogatory language.

High School Track and Field 9

Cheer for your team when you are not warming up or running your races. You

cant win a meet by only one race.

School comes before track and field; you are a student before an athlete.
Alcohol and drug use will not be tolerated. Your choices, therefore your own

consequences.
Do not bash our team on social media, nor our opponents.

Program Goals
1.

Track and field is an individual sport and is more focused on the individual athlete
and their personal race times. This makes the program goals more about bettering
the individuals as compared to a team sport which is more focused on wins and
cohesion. Individual sports goals focus more on work ethic and bettering person

High School Track and Field 10

records. The goals arent so much a quantity but quality because each athletes
personal goal will be different.
2.

Recruiting athletes will be open to all who are interested, but also those from
other sports as well. Especially at the opportunity of other sports cutting people
since it will not be a cut sport. To better develop talent, the athletes will try to be
recruited as underclassmen so they can have more experience and improve over
their high school seasons. Getting involved when they are younger they can learn
routines that work personally and customize their workouts and diet.

3.

Since it is a more individual sport it is more difficult to put a quantitative amount

because it depends on the individual talent of athletes to win meets, along with the
talent and depth of other teams. As the team strengthens as individuals, the goal will
be to place in top 5 of 75% of events. Then move onto top 3 and continue to add
depth to be able to have multiple athletes placing in events. Personally, each athlete
should have a goal to reach a new personal best each season. They will make their
own goals, whether it be to make varsity, or to run under a certain time. Ultimately
the goal should be for them to get better every season, while improving form and
ability.

4.

To reach post-season competition, the goal is to better athletes, and add depth to
the events. To show interest in every individual athlete and their times, so that they
will want to push harder and better their personal records. To keep regionals and
states in mind, the qualifying times and distances will be posted in the locker rooms
and weight rooms for the athletes to see the goals and be more tangible to strive for.

High School Track and Field 11

5.

Community is important because they support the schools and are the crowd at
the meets. To be in the community, the team will volunteer at races that are hosted
by local business throughout the season. This includes 5k races as well as fleet feet
activities done for youth.

6.

Since the athletes are also in school they will be upheld to standards of passing
all their classes. It will not be the coaches job to keep tabs on their school work but
the student will face consequences including not being able to run in varsity meets,
or trying a new event. They are expected to show respect to each of the coaches
and to their team mates. Along with respect for their teachers. If their behavior at
practice isnt found appropriate they will be spoken to and possible consequences in
the sport. Because school is important and should be the focus, that comes before
the sport. As for outside of school activities if it is found out that the students are
partying or partaking in illegal activities, they will be suspended from at least one
meet. They will be upheld to high standards on the track as well as off the track, for
they represent not only themselves but the school and team as well.

7.

The costs of new equipment and uniforms will come from the school and
fundraisers done by the athletes. Warm-up sweats will be bought by the athletes and
they will be able to keep them. To reduce the cost, the whole team will part take in a
pop can drive and the money raised will go to the price reduction for the team
members purchasing the sweats. A minimum of 10 dollars is necessary to receive
the reduced price because the veterans also went through it to reduce theirs. This
allows for a better quality of warm ups but also to have the team working together

High School Track and Field 12

and making them cheaper. It will be important to take good care of the equipment so
that it will last longer and not have to be as frequently replaced or fixed.

Evaluation Tools
The goals are to be evaluated on a more personal basis. They will compare their
individual race time to past races and strive to beat them. As a whole team the goal will
be to create depth for each event and can be evaluated by seeing who is close to the

High School Track and Field 13

top and running varsity and encouraging those people to reach their potential. Anyone is
welcome to join the team, but varsity races will be the top two or three people
depending on the meetfor each event. At the beginning of the season, the goal is to
have the whole student bodied informed of the season starting. This includes flyers,
announcements, along with word of mouth. In regards of recruiting from other sports
that will involve being in contact with the other sports coaches and getting to know their
athletes as well. The athletes should be working hard in practice and in the meets,
which will result in improvement. Winning meets and post-season will come with the
athletes training well and pushing themselves to constantly do better than the last race
and the workout before. When organizing volunteer opportunities, the date and
availability of the athletes over the years will help to dictate which events the team will
be involved with. This must coincide with events at the school and other obligations of
the students. The coaches will watch the athletes and guide them through practice and
keep in contact with how they feel and how the workouts feel personally to them. This
allows for the coaches to adjust the workouts and make sure the athletes are getting the
most out of them that theyre supposed to. The coaches should be arriving on time and
should be seen pouring into the athletes. Theyll be asked weekly how the workouts are
going and what they see going on in practice. The students should also be appreciating
them and feeling as though their leadership as coaches is benefiting them.
