The Watsons Go to Birmingham End of Unit Project

The Watsons Go to Birmingham is a Historical Fiction Novel that follows the Watson Family and
their trip to Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. As we read the book, we came across historical
events that heavily impacted the civil rights movement. This activity will ask students to expand
their knowledge of the civil rights movement by exploring other events that took place during
this time period. Students will be assigned to one of the following historical events:
1. 19th Street Presbyterian Church Bombing- Answer the 5 Ws Who, What, When, Where, and
Why?
2. March on Washington- Answer the 5 Ws Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
3. Selma Montgomery March- Answer the 5 Ws Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
4. The Watts Riots- Answer the 5 Ws Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
5. University of Alabama Integration- Answer the 5 Ws Who, What, When, Where, and Why?
Green Screen Project- Students, in groups will create a news story based on their assigned topic
that answer the 5 Ws and follows the criteria below:
- Script will be created, using information from the book and evidence from primary and
secondary sources.
- Video will be 3-4 minutes in length
- Still image and/or video footage will be present as backdrop.
Transmedia Storytelling Using one of the historical events above, your group will create a
transmedia storytelling poster, that illustrates the 5 Ws of your event.
- The poster must include:
o At least 3 visuals/pictures of the event
o At least 2 QR codes that provide more information about your event
o A link or QR code to a Voki of someone in your group introducing your historical
event
o Answer the 5 key questions of Media Literacy.
E-Portfolio To compile their work on, The Watsons Go to Their Birmingham, the groups of
students will create an e-portfolio, including their green screen project, transmedia storytelling,
etc. Students will need include complete other class assignments on their e-portfolio that tie into
the book such as:
- E-portfolio must include:
o Green Screen Project
o Transmedia Storytelling
o Flash Animation
o Virtual Field trip- students will create a site of the loca

Flipped Classroom- Students, in groups will create an informative piece based on the event they
were assigned. Below are the following requirements:
- The Flipped Classroom must include:
o 2-3 minute presentation
o 3 visuals
o Answer the 5 ws
