This article examines the concept of using STEM/STEAM in an early childhood

classroom through the vision of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and Fred Rogers views of
teaching young children. The article offers a simple, yet, precise, view of how
STEAM concepts can be applied to an early childhood classroom. Primarily, the
article offers educators the guidance to develop childrens interests and encourage
natural conversations through STEAM.
This article influences my topic of STEM/STEAM in the early childhood classroom
because it offers a firsthand view of how STEM/STEAM concepts can naturally be
developed in early childhood classrooms.

The article relates to my research topic and study because it gives clear information on
the areas of STEM/STEAM. It also provides developmentally appropriate ideas that
can be utilized to integrate STEM/STEAM concepts in a pre-kindergarten classroom.
Background-This article provides background information and definitions of STEAM
concepts that I can apply to my research in my classroom. I will use this article and
others to contribute to the background of my research project.
Design-I will use this article to aid in the planning of classroom interventions to
include STEAM in my classroom.
Implications/Action Planning- This article supports my plans to continue research
and move forward with implementation of STEM/STEAM concepts in my prekindergarten classroom. I will discuss this article as I write my implications and action
plan describing how I will adapt my practice in the future to integrate additional
STEM/STEAM concepts in my classroom, based on my research findings.

The article describes the process of developing and implementing a STEM Summer
Camp where preschoolers experimented and investigated with materials while learning
basic concepts of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through
play as part of the educational process. The main focus of the study presented in the
article was to demonstrate how STEM concepts can be explored and taught through
play. This article also addresses some common gender misconceptions that are
predominant views of many in regards to girls and engineering.
This article and study influences my topic of STEM/STEAM in the early childhood
classroom because it provides information on a pilot of program and study of using
STEM concepts with preschool age children.

The article provides data collected in the study completed a Hood College Lab School
with preschool age children. The data shows that preschool age children are capable of
learning STEM concepts through play and applying knowledge to activities and
conversations. There is also a component of the study which addresses parent
satisfaction with the STEM program.
Background-This article provides background information on the implementation of a
STEM program with preschool age children. It provides a sample of activities as well
as a sample daily schedule of implementing STEM concepts into a preschool program.
Design-The information given in the article on the daily STEM activities will aid in
developing my STEM/STEAM based intervention for my classroom. Furthermore, the
inclusion of the parent satisfaction survey in the study gave me pause to include a
possible component of parent interest and satisfaction to my own research questions.
Data Collection/Analysis Methodology-The data given in the article will be utilized
to compare with the data compiled in my own classroom.
Findings/Conclusions-The finding from the study presented in the article will be used
to potentially support the findings of my own research of STEM/STEAM concepts in
an early childhood classroom.
Implications/Action Planning-The article promote play based learning, with the
addition of STEM concepts. I am a huge proponent of play based learning which is
fully supported in this article. This article contributes to my own teaching philosophy
and beliefs in play based learning.

This article provides strategies to use to implement STEM concepts in the classroom.
The article offers three different profiles or views from educators on the use of STEM
in the classroom:
Profile 1: I want to use STEM in my classroom, but am unsure of how to
incorporate it
Profile 2: I have been able to incorporate some STEM concepts into my
classroom, but would like to do more
Profile 3: STEM is an integral part of my classroom. I am looking for ways to
continue to develop and strengthen STEM in my classroom
Through each profile the reader is offered a chance to hear an educators voice
followed by strategies that can help each type of educator successfully implement
STEM concepts into the classroom.
This article and study influences my topic of STEM/STEAM in the early childhood
classroom because it gives three different viewpoints of using STEM in the ECE
classroom.

This article relates to my research topic and study because the viewpoints given in the
article from different educators are valid and relate to my own view of STEM/STEAM
concepts versus my director and co-workers views. I think this article gives me
talking points to use when discussing my research project with my director.
Background-This article provide different views of using STEM concepts in the early
childhood classroom. I will use the article to discuss STEM with my director.
Design-The strategies offered in the article for implementation of STEM in the

This article presents a study where 20 preschool classrooms were investigated for the
purpose of examining the classroom science environments and learning. Checklists
were used to analyze the availability of science materials, equipment, and activities for
preschoolers in the classroom. The checklists used in this study were:
*The Preschool Classroom Science Materials/Equipment Checklist
*The Preschool Classroom Science Activities Checklist
*The Preschool Teacher Classroom/Sciencing Form
The data in the study showed that the majority of activities in which the preschool
teachers engaged in were not science related activities. The study also found that half
of the preschool classrooms observed had a dedicated science area and natural
materials available to the children. The overall findings indicated that improvement is
needed in preschool classroom to include science. In order to accomplish this, teachers
need to reflect more on their own practices and utilize the science materials that are
available in their environment. Teachable moments must be taken advantage of to
incorporate the childrens natural curiosity and scientific thinking.
This article influences my topic of STEM/STEAM in the early childhood classroom
because it is a study that provides clear data on the use, or lack thereof, science
materials, teaching and exploration in the preschool classrooms observed for the study.
The study offers areas to be examined and developed in order to provide quality
science experiences in the preschool classroom. It also presented checklists that can be
utilized in my own classroom when examining the science area.
The article relates to my research topic and study because it offers a different view of
science in the preschool classrooms than what I am accustomed to in my own
classroom. It pushed me to reflect on the positive ways that I encourage, facilitate and
respond to science in my own classroom.
Background-This article provides background information and statics on the use and
availability of science concepts and materials in preschool classrooms. I will use this
article and others to contribute to the background of my research project.
Implications/Action Planning- I will use this article to support my findings of the
natural curiosity, inquiry and exploration of science within STEM by the children.
