Unit Plan- The South


Famous People
4 th grade
Goals

-Introduce the class to famous people who are from the south
-Gain experience researching a topic
-Draw a picture and Complete bibliography worksheet

Integration of Learning Outcomes


Students will be able to research a famous person who was born in the South and
complete a bibliography worksheet.
Standards
7.4.4.B Identify the effect of people on the physical systems within a community.
8.1.4.C Identify a specific research topic and develop questions relating to the research topic.

Anticipatory Set
Good morning boys and girls we are going to be continuing our unit on The South.
There are many important people who were born in the South. Do you know any? Today we are
going to be talking about famous people who impacted the world we live in, that were born in the
South. We are going to be doing some research and the completing a bibliography worksheet!
Procedures
1. Have the students turn and talk to a partner about any famous/ important people that
they know of that were born in the South
2. Bring everyone back as a class and have partners share what people they came up
with.
3. Write on the board any of the people that the say
4. Write on the board some actually people that were born in the South
-George Washington
-John Adams
-James Madison
5. Tell the class that they are going to be doing some research on a famous person by
doing research on a lab top

6. Let the students get their lab tops


7. Put the provided websites on the board
8. Pass out the Bibliography worksheet
9. Give the students 25 minutes to find a person and research them
10. After they are done, have volunteer present who they researched and what they
found out
Differentiation
Students who need more of a challenge will write 3 questions that they want to find out
about their famous person. Students who need more assistance will only have to complete 7 of
the 10 questions on the bibliography sheet.
Closure
Great job boys and girls! Today we learned about some very influential people that were
born in the South. There are/were so many great people who helped shape our country from our
southern states. You all did a great job researching some of theses people. Maybe one day you
will all be famous/ influential people in our country too!
Formative/ Summative Assessment
The teacher will walk around the room to make sure students are on task and following
directions. At the end of the activity the teacher will collect their Bibliography worksheets to
assess if they correctly found a famous person from the south and completed their worksheet.

Reflection on Planning

Teachers should do research on their own first. Getting a vast list of


people from the South. It is important to incorporate presidents, actors,
singers, activists, etc. so every student can research someone that is
interesting to them. It is also important to realize that not all students will
know influential people from the South, which is why they are doing the
research in the first place!
