Content Area/Grade/Standards/Topics Addressed: SSKH1. The student will identify the purpose of national holidays
and describe the people or events celebrated.
Brief Description of Learning Experience: As you address the standards, what will students and teachers do? How will
the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? What audience will use/care about the multimedia projects
students are creating? How broad is this audience? How will student work be assessed and by whom? Who will provide
feedback to students about their work? (Overview should be approximately 1-2 paragraphs).
The project will be introduced by giving the students a list or using flashcards with the following American holidays:
Labor Day
Columbus Day (Christopher Columbus)
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Presidents Day (George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and the current President)
Memorial Day
Flag Day
Independence Day
Students will then watch the provided multimedia video (movie) regarding these holidays, which is approximately 5
minutes long. The entire lesson may take up to 30 minutes to complete. Teachers and parents as well as other students
would be the type of audience viewing/using multimedia projects that the students have created. The audience would
likely be quite small. Student work would be assessed by mini activities relating to the lesson, in addition to a short quiz
on the holidays and significant figures that we have discussed in class. This will be estimated by the instructor and
evaluate the students overall understanding of the content. Teachers will provide feedback to their students about their
work to help them grasp on to the given information.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why?
I believe the LoTi levels of this lesson would be Loti #1 (Awareness) and #2 (Exploration). Digital technologies support
central, standards-based instructional activities that are monitored and assessed by teachers. Students are engaging in
mid-range critical thinking goals, and discovery learning model is present at the very least. Since this lesson was created
for Kindergarten students by the instructor, the students would only be applying and/or analyzing the data. However, if
the students were to create their own multimedia videos, then they would be learning at a higher LoTi level.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to the project? Could the project be
completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of technology, if any, are
going to be used in the learning experience?
Multimedia authoring tools are important to the project because without them it would be boring and unengaging to
students. I believe that a project could still be created; however, I also think that the use of technology would make it
more complete. It adds interest to the topic. Other than computers or a projector, no other types of technology would be
used in this learning experience.
Inspiration (optional): If you used existing multimedia projects as a model for your project (whether in part or whole),
include the URL(s) so we can visit. Explain what concepts you borrowed from others.
I did not use any existing multimedia projects, I created my own video using Windows Movie Maker.
