Classroom
Rules
1.

This is the way that I would like to have my classroom set up. I think that having the
seats in rows and all facing the teacher is very helpful and useful. Also with the classroom set up
this way it is easy to have the students work in groups because theyll just need to move their
desks together and it wont be a big to reorganize the desks before the next class period. I think
in the back of the room I would have book shelfs with textbooks and other historical reading
materials that might be helpful for the students. At the front of the room I think that maps on the
wall and other types of posters, like the classroom rules and norms and just other interesting
history facts would be great.
Classroom Rules/Norms
I think that classroom rules and norms are determined by the teacher. While classroom norms are
both from the teacher and also the students. Some examples of classroom rules would be like:
-Arrive to class on time
-Bring all the needed materials to class
-Be respectful to all staff and students
-Follow teacher directions first time given
As for classroom norms, they are obviously a bit different from what classroom rules are.
Classroom norms are basically an agreement amongst the students on how they want to be
treated. So norms are based on things such as respect, responsibility, fairness and helpfulness.
Norms are very important because students realize that they agreed upon those with the guidance
of the teacher, so students know that in order to maintain the norms of the classroom they must
follow them. Some examples of classroom norms would be:

-we will talk nicely to one another

-we will treat one another with respect
-we will include one another
-we will help one another
-we will solve problems fairly

Classroom rules and norms are very important for the students and it is very important that they
are communicated to students right away. I think that is the best approach, almost every
schoolyear during the first week of school teachers make sure that the students understand what
the rules and expectations in the classroom are for the rest of the year. The students usually have
to take a syllabus quiz on what the rules and norms of the class are going to be in order to make
sure they learned them. I think that is also a really good way to communicate classroom rules and
norms to the parents as well, by sending a paper home with the student and having not only the
student read it and sign it but also the parent. As for communicating classroom rules and norms
with administrators I think that the most important thing would be just making sure that they
think that those rules and norms coincide with the school philosophy and also most importantly
with the district and state requirements on what is expected of the students.
Classroom Procedures
To be in class every student, needs to follow the following procedures, students must
enter the room quietly and take their seats. Then I would begin to call roll after the first bell has
rung. Then I would see which students are absent and which students are late. The students who

are late will be those whom are not in their seat by the time the tardy bell rings. After that I think
that it is important to have a signal maybe raising my hand so that the students know that all eyes
have to be on me because we are beginning class.
At the end of class I think that the classroom procedures would be different obviously.
The students must wait until the teacher dismisses them in order to leave the class. As part of the
end of class/period classroom procedure I think that the students must realize that they need to
put all their supplies away or any textbooks that they have borrowed before leaving the
classroom. I think another important part of the end of class classroom procedure is that the
students know where to hand in their homework or if it is a test to put in a pile on my desk. I
think that just making sure that the students know that the homework goes into the blue bin on
my desk and that tests just go in a pile on the desk itself can be very important in order to keep
things organized.
I think that no one can know exactly how to handle transitions/interruptions. There are
just so many different scenarios to deal with that It is impossible to know how specifically to
handle each and every one of them. But I think that as a teacher I will plan to handle those
transitions/interruptions by being firm and clear in what I expect of the students. I think that
students must know that they are expected to not be sharpening their pencil during a lecture, to
always raise their hand if they have a question or need to use the restroom. But there are also
times that certain unique interruptions happen in the classroom. I think that just being calm and
keeping my poise and trying to just make a logical decision is very important in that type of
situation.
There are so many different instructional strategies that teachers can use in the classroom.
Some instructional strategies that I would like to use would be like collages, comparison tables,

exit slips and peer evaluations. For like collages I think that I would need to put certain rules and
procedures in place in order for things to go smoothly. Students would need to know that they
need to put their supplies away when their done, that they have to share the supplies, that they
have to take care of the supplies because they are for everyone.
I think that implementing those types of rules would be very important, and a good way
to do so would just be by reminding the students about those procedures before beginning the
collage assignment. I think that just making sure that they know what their responsibilities are
during that particular assignment and during any type of assignment like that are is going to be
very useful and will just provide clarity to the students. Another example could be using a
teaching strategy like peer evaluations. I think that for something like that it is really necessary to
establish procedures for the students, and make clear for them not to be bias towards their fellow
peers and to evaluate their peers work as closely as possible and as correctly as possible. I think
that a good way to implement that type of procedure would be just letting the students know that
they will also be graded on how well they did their peer evaluation.
Differentiation for Special Populations
The number one goal in my classroom will be for all the students to be able to learn and
benefit from the class. I think that one thing is very important will be accommodating students
who have disabilities or who need extra help because maybe they are just beginning to learn the
English language. I think that its really great that there are many different techniques and
strategies that can be used to help these students. Clearly, that is what is needed a desire to
maximize their ability to learn the material and it will be of great reward for the students and the
teacher as well. That is what I would like to do in my classroom, teach everyone to the best of
my ability and to give extra help to those who need it.

I think for students who are SPED students things such as using peer tutoring, and having
shorter discussions and using visual aids can be really helpful in their learning experience. I also
think that extending time for like writing notes or doing any assignment in general can be very
important. Also having reduced material can help and in allowing the student to gain a better
understand or just get the main idea of the reading. There are just a lot of helpful things that as a
teacher I can do to help my SPED students, like highlighting key words in their reading material
or making a vocab list with pictures to help them grasp concepts more easily as well. I think that
all that is needed is just a desire to help each student grasp what is being taught.
For students who are in ESL, just giving them a bit more time with assignments can also
help. Since I do know Spanish fluently and can write it very well, I could translate material for
them but I think that the main point of being in ESL is to learn English. So I think that using
maybe visuals would be better off than translating things for them. I remember when I was in
ESL in elementary school that visuals were a huge part of what the ESL teachers used, and it
really helped to get a grasp of the meaning of the words in English and it really did help a lot.
Another useful teaching for ESL students could be giving them vocabulary lists of key concepts
so that they can look them up and find the definitions and get an understanding of the meaning
and significance of those words.
Clearly, gifted/talented students are a lot more different to accommodate than SPED or
ESL students. I think that some techniques that can be used to maximize the effectiveness of my
classroom management for these types of students would be just challenging them a bit more.
Giving these students maybe more reading material than the rest of the students or just giving
them a version of the test thats a little rigorous can be really helpful. Ultimately, It is important
to be fair with all students and I think that will be one of my points of emphasis. Just because

their G/T students doesnt mean that I will be biased towards being more concentrated on giving
them more attention than the SPED or ESL students, I think that just being fair with all the
students and wanting them all to be successful is what makes great teachers.
Classroom management is important in all facets of teaching and especially when
considering that are many different types of students in the classroom. So I think that
emphasizing the rules for everyone is really important but also accommodating the rules of
students with disabilities is also very important. I think overall there is a need to do everything in
order to make each students learning experience more effective. Differences are just that,
differences, but what is clear in my mind is that all students have the ability to thrive in their own
individual way.

Student Roles in Classroom Management

In order to involve students in managing the classroom it is of upmost importance to get
them involved from the beginning. I think that giving them the opportunity to help out with
classroom norms is something that could really help out and give them a sense of responsibility. I
think that students in general like to feel like they are involved and I think that just being able to
get them involved is something really powerful. Giving students a chance to also prove that they
can be responsible is also very important because itll keep them on edge and theyll know that if
they dont behave well than they wont get a privilege like that again.
One of my steps in helping students become involved in classroom management is by
allowing them to work in groups. I think that when students are able to work in groups it really
creates a bond between students, they realize that they have to work together in order to do well

on the assignment or project. Also having students work in groups can give them a sense of
responsibility in that they know that they need to be organized and share class materials and
return them at the end of class. Overall, group work just allows students to feel more involved.
I think another good way to get students involved in classroom management would be
having projects like maybe like poster projects and having students hang them up on the wall. I
remember in middle school that teachers used to do that a lot and in high school as well. I think it
is really great and it motivates students to get involved in classroom management when they see
that the teacher is proud of their hard work. Teachers display their students work inside the
classroom and other outside the classroom and for students it is motivating. There are just so
many great ideas for projects, I remember my sisters 8th grade history teacher had them research
their family surnames and make a shield with the surnames coat of arms, they were studying the
middle ages, and he did hang up the shields in his classroom and it was really great.
All in all, the main way to encourage student involvement and connectedness is giving
them a voice. I think that also giving them a chance to choose what topic they want to do for the
semester project or something even as small as what color marker they want the teacher to use
that day can really go a longs way in making the students feel like they can get involved in
classroom management. I think that things like that are really what is needed, I want to be a
teacher that really does care about the students opinions because many times when students are
given a voice in the classroom than they struggle because the teacher doesnt get to know them
very well. Being just able to hear out the students and learn their academic strengths and
weaknesses can be an effective way to get them involved and working together on striving to do
their best in the classroom.
