WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v6.

06

Added support for exporting loaded data to a Global Mapper package file
(*.gmp). These files are similar to workspace files except that the actual data is
stored in the files. Package files provide an easy way to pass around lots of data
between Global Mapper users with a single self-contained file.
Added new File menu command to load all files matching a user-specified mask
(or series of masks) under a selected folder on the disk. This provides an easy way
to load a lot of files that are spread out in a large directory structure.
Added support for cropping raster and elevation data to a selected area feature on
export.
Added support for loading ASTER DEM and L1B imagery files in their native
HDF file format.
Added the ability to load individual frame files from RPF databases like CADRG
and CIB. To do this, simply select the frame(s) to load, then select that the type of
the file is Raster Product Format (CADRG/CIB) Frame if prompted.
Added support for loading DIVA GIS grid files.
Added the ability to load Erdas Imagine .img files that contain gridded elevation
data (previously they were displayed as grayscale imagery).
Made double-clicking on a feature in the Digitizer Tool bring up the edit dialog
for that feature.
Added right-click option to the Digitizer tool to allow creating area features from
selected line features.
Added right-click option to the Digitizer tool to allow assigning area features to
be islands within other, enclosing, area features.

Noire 1948 (Congo) datums.
Added support for loading GNIS files with the latest column definitions and pipedelimited files (GNIS files are available for download at
http://geonames.usgs.gov/stategaz/index.html).
Enabled option to fill small gaps in data when exporting to non-elevation
GeoTIFF files (it was already enabled for elevation exports). This allows gaps up
to several pixels in size between or within data files being exported to be filled by
interpolating nearby pixels to fill them in.
Added option to XYZ Grid export to allow coordinate values to be saved in ECEF
(Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed) coordinates. This option is for very advanced users
only.

Fixed auto-adjusting the contrast for imagery with more than about 4 billion
pixels (this is only very large image files).
Fixed problem when creating DBF files with elevation attributes that have more
than one digit of precision beyond the decimal point. The elevation values were
getting truncated oddly in those cases.
Made the auto-clip collar functionality work for 3.75 minute DOQs.
Made the Use Selected Projection for All Files checkbox appear when loading
workspace files if the projection could not be automatically determined for all of
the files.
Allowed DTED files which contain unknown record types after the data and
header records to be loaded.
Fixed problems loading Limits data like Anchorage areas and marine routes from
DNC chart files.
Made extended note text associated with features in DNC and S-57 chart files be
loaded and added as attributes.
Made auto-contrast statistics for raster data be saved in workspace files so that

Added support for loading extremely large binary ArcGRID files that have the
actual data split in to two separate files.
Corrected problems with hill shading for very large elevation files (specifically, if
the sum of the squares of the pixel width and pixel height was greater than about 4
billion, the hill shading would not work properly).
Corrected registration of BIL/GridFloat data that use the XLLCORNER and
YLLCORNER fields in the header file (they were stretched in the Y direction by
1 sample).
Reduced memory utilization when exporting very large or numerous ECW and/or
JPEG2000 files.
Added new parameters to the GENERATE_CONTOURS script command to
allow specification of the simplification threshold to use (advanced users only) as
well as the option to just generate contour lines at a single height (the contour
interval value) and to turn off filling gaps in the elevation data used to generate

specification of the description to use for a layer in the Overlay Control Center.

Added support for forward slash and backslash characters in DMS and DM
coordinate strings, such as in ASCII files.
Fixed error when trying to edit a newly created attribute value when creating a
new area, point, or line feature with the Digitizer Tool.
Fixed crash when rectifying BMP files.
Fixed recently introduced problem with BMP files saved from the path
profile/line of sight dialog being upside down.
Improved reprojecting and rendering of vector features in lat/lon coordinates that
either cross the anti-meridian (ATM) or use non-standard longitude coordinates
(i.e. longitudes from 0 to 360 rather than -180 to +180).
Added support for importing ARC entities from DXF files.

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v6.05

Updated to work with the latest TerraServer changes. TerraServer access was
broken in all previous v6.xx releases on about December 2nd, 2004 when a minor
change was made by the TerraServer team.
Reduced the memory usage of SRTM HGT files to allow much larger chunks of
SRTM data to be loaded. Now several thousand HGT files can be loaded
simultaneously.
Added support for loading Moss/Genio format files.
Added support for loading Geosoft Grid format files.
Added support for loading interlaced PNG files.
Added support for exporting loaded elevation data to Geosoft Grid format files.
Allowed Generic ASCII Text files to be loaded through the normal File->Open
Data File mechanism in addition to through the Open Generic ASCII Text file
mechanism.
Allowed the load of Generic ASCII Text files to be canceled.
When exporting to the CSV format, make the elevation value the third column
(immediately after the coordinates) if exported. Also include the feature
description as a column.
Allowed transparent color values in a script file to be specified by palette index in
addition to RGB color value.
Improved connection of contour lines generated by Global Mapper, resulting in
more closed contours where possible.
Fixed shrinkage of loaded ECW files by one pixel on the right and bottom sides.
Made the first vertex of a feature be colored green and the last vertex colored red
when a line or area feature is selected in the Digitizer Tool and polyline vertex
display is enabled. This allows you to determine the direction that the polyline
goes.
Made the export of attribute values to DBF and Shapefiles be case-insensitive so
that you dont get multiple attribute fields with names that are identical except for
case (i.e. LONGITUDE and Longitude).
Fixed DBF attribute loading. In previous versions the attributes assigned to a DBF

point were those for the previous feature in the DBF file.
Made minor tweaks to Moss file export to make the generated Moss file more
compatible with other software packages. Also made the elevation of features be
saved to Moss files rather than the feature classification number.
Fixed problems loading Arc ASCII Grid files with more than about 65000
characters per line (this is usually around six or seven thousand samples per row).
Significantly sped up the import of Arc ASCII Grid files.
Made interplanetary datums be recognized when reading PRJ files.
When loading generic ASCII files, make the coordinate order setting be
remembered between dialog invocations.
Fixed bug introduced in v6.04 that prevented changing the display label field to
<No Name Field> from working for Shapefiles in the Options dialog accessible
from the Control Center.
Fixed bug introduced in v6.04 that prevented the loading of Arc Binary Grid files
that are missing a prj.adf file or have a prj.adf file that Global Mapper does not
recognize.
Fixed problems with reading some Lambert projections from ECW files that were
introduced in the v6.04 release.

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v6.04

Replaced the Recenter Tool with the new Pan (Grab-and-Drag) Tool. The new
tool allows you to left click and drag the map to a new location which should be
much more intuitive than the operation of the current Recenter Tool.
Added option for most vector data types to select which attribute value to use (if
any) for the feature labels.
Added option in the Overlay Control Center to right click on a raster or elevation
layer and zoom the main view such that a single sample/pixel in the selected layer
will be approximately one pixel on the screen.
Added support for exporting loaded point data to a CSV format file.
Added support for loading DBF (Dbase) format files with point data.
Added support for loading BT (Binary Terrain) format elevation grid files.

Added support for loading BMP format files with associated world or TAB files.

Added the Gauss Krueger Germany projection which is a version of the Gauss
Krueger projection added in the last release which has 3-degree wide zones rather
than 6-degree wide zones. Also added support for the Gauss Krueger projection
variation used in Slovenia.
Added support for the Aitoff-Wagner projection.
Added support for loading some MSI Planet format elevation grid files.
Added support for exporting loaded elevation data to the Gravsoft grid format.
Fixed occasional distortion of imagery rectified with the polynomial method if all
control points are along straight lines.

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v6.02

Added support for loading ADRG format files.


Added support for loading waypoint, track, and route data from GPX (GPS
eXchange Format) files.
Added support for editing the name, type, and drawing style of multiple selected
features at a time in the Digitizer tool (previously only a single feature could be

edited at a time).
Added support for using vector features with elevation when performing a view
shed analysis. This allows you to add things like buildings, fence lines, trees, etc.
and have them be used when generating your view sheds.
Added support for rectifying vector layers from the Overlay Control Center (this
is a right-click option just as it is for raster layers).

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v6.01

Fixed problems connecting to the TerraServer from some computers, especially

Allowed specification of the target compression ratio to use when batch
converting to ECW format.

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v6.00

Added support for true 3D viewing. When you have elevation data loaded, just
press the 3D button on the toolbar to get a 3D perspective view of the current
view, including any loaded raster and vector data.
Added support for loading TerraServer data directly into Global Mapper. Simply
use the new File menu command to load any portion of the TerraServer data for
viewing. This data is fully functional and can be exported to new files as well.
Improved the batch conversion functionality to support almost any import format
to any compatible export format. You can now also configure the sample spacing
to use when converting to a raster or elevation format. The default is still to use
the sample spacing of the source data.
Added support for exporting data to ECW format files. The maximum size of the
uncompressed data that is to make up the ECW file is limited to 500 MB.
Added support for loading CADRG and CIB format data.
Added support for loading VPF format data such as the VMAP0 and VMAP1 data
sets available from http://geoengine.nima.mil/ and the Digital Nautical Chart

Added support for using a color palette in a .clr file for BIL/BIP/BSQ 8-bit
imagery. The .clr file just needs to have the same base name as the image file to
be used (i.e. image.clr for image.bil).
Greatly increased the speed of exporting from ECW files to new imagery files.
Made users be prompted to select the projection for USGS DEM files that do not
contain complete projection information rather than just failing to load the file.
Fixed problems exporting to USGS DEM and DLG formats with projections who
have projection parameters west of -10 degrees longitude or east of +100 degrees
longitude. Note this does not affect the UTM, State Plane, or Geographic
projection typically used with these file types.
Fixed problem that prevented users from printing to a printer after they had
printed to a file.
Made the color attribute for closed DXF polygons be applied as a border color.
Made area features with elevations be considered when creating elevation grids
from loaded vector data from the Overlay Control Center.
Changed Allow Overlapping Labels option on the General Options tab of the
Configuration dialog to Always Display All Labels and modified the behavior
to reflect that change. Previously, duplicate labels near each other on the screen
could still be hidden even if the option was checked.
No longer export the optional Bounds field to MIF files since that limits what
MapInfo will display if other files are loaded.
Made elevation or z-values in DGN line features be saved when the features are
loaded.

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v5.10

Added support for loading JPEG-in-TIFF files.

Fixed bug introduced in v5.09 that prevented the Line Type used for features in
Shapefiles from being changed.
Added option to raster format exports (i.e. BIL, GeoTIFF, JPG) to allow the user
to select whether or not they want loaded vector data to be included in the
exported image. By default, loaded vector data will NOT be exported (this is the
opposite of the setting introduced in v5.09).
Added support for correctly positioning DXF files with features that use an
extrusion vector to describe a rotation for the object.
Added additional right click option in the path profile/line of sight display dialog
to show additional information about the path, such as the vertical distance,
horizontal distance, bearing, and tilt angle.
Fixed bug when using linear image rectification (i.e. rectification using only two
points) that prevented imagery from being flipped horizontally or vertically when
necessary.
Fixed occasional access violation error when using improperly defined
projections.

WHAT'S NEW IN Global Mapper v5.09

Added GPS tracking support! You can now track your position using a GPS
device connected over the serial port that communicates in NMEA-0183 v2.x or
Garmin binary format. You can mark waypoints at your current location and
record a tracklog of where you have been.
Added support for loading Arc/Info Binary Vector Coverages (i.e. arc.adf files).
