PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.1 Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g.,
interpret 5 X 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each.
For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be
expressed as 5 X 7.
List the Learning Objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson. Use the
following format: Students will be able to
The students will be able to do basic multiplication problems mentally and
through pictures.
Describe how the objective is relevant to students lives.
This is relevant to future math use. The students will need to fluent in
basic multiplication facts.
List the words relevant to the content area that you will either introduce
and/or review during your lesson.
Multiplication, whole numbers, products, groups, and objects
List the materials you will need to teach the lesson.
You tube clip: Multiplication 3rd grade-Learn Multiplication educational

pencil, skype

ASSESSMENT
Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to
measure students level of understanding toward the learning objective(s)
prior to teaching the lesson.

APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson pre-assessment. (if

applicable)
Is your pre-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?
Describe the timeline as to when you plan to administer the preassessment?
(Recommended timeline is a minimum of two days prior to teaching your
lesson).

Create and insert a table/chart/graph that shows the pre-assessment data

results. (if applicable)

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have

demonstrated they know) will be used to design the lesson objectives,

instruction, and post-assessment.

Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment

you will use to measure students level of understanding toward the learning objectives after
teaching the lesson.

Is your post-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?

APPENDIX: Include a copy of a Key/Product (completed by you, the teacher) which
provides a model of the desired outcome.

Is your key included at the end of this lesson plan?

TECHNOLOGY
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to
incorporate into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.
You tube clip, skype

ACCOMMODATIONS
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to
meet the needs of all learners and accommodate differences in students
learning, culture, language, etc. * Be sure that these accommodations are
based on what you identified/described in your contextual information
(Task I).
I will have the student if possible access skype in a quiet room with
minimal distractions. The student will need their parent to help access
skype and you tube.

MANAGEMENT
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student
behavioral/developmental needs in order to keep students on task and actively engaged
throughout the lesson.

Management strategies over skype will be verbally checking in and having

the student show me their paper with their work on it. I will engage the
student by using various methods to teach such as the YouTube clip, hands
on practice and listening to me.

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
I Do
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome of
learning objectives)
Describe how you will activate student interest and present the learning
objective in an engaging way (this is your lesson opening).
I will activate the students interest by engaging them in a riddle. I have
four cookies and want to share them with you, what would be the fair way
to do this?
Describe how you will communicate (to students) how the objective is
relevant to their lives.
I will explain that with the cookie question they have just used the object
and this is how it is relevant. It may come up in day to day situations.
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to
model/explain/demonstrate the knowledge and skills required of the
objective. (cite theories/theorists)
Third graders are in Piagets Concrete Operational Stage, which means
they are beginning to think more logical or have operational thought. This
fits with learning multiplication because they are beginning to work things
out internally in their head rather than always need physical objects to
work problems out.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on

to guided practice.
I will check for understanding by having a practice problem or two that
they will figure out on paper and show to me on the screen through skype.
We Do
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to
practice the skills and content needed to meet the learning objective(s).

After I give my cookie example I will have them show me what two equal
groups of cookies look like by drawing an equal groups picture. After we try
a few other facts such as 3 X 3, 4 X 4, and 5 X 5. I will show the YouTube
clip. Then we will move on to uneven groupings such as 2 X 3, 3 X 5, and 4
X 5.
Describe how you will check for students understanding before moving on to independent
practice.

After each problem, I will have the student show me their practice page
over the screen on skype.
You Do
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills
required by the lesson objectives? (this is the post-assessment)

I will have the student make up their own problem and tell me, such as
them saying to me that I have 4 cookies and give you 6 more. Now how
many cookies do we have? I will have them work it out and again show me
their work for two problems.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of your post-assessment.
Is your BLANK COPY of the post-assessment included at the end of this
lesson plan?
Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective and any
skills/content that were taught in an interactive manner (whole/small
group, etc.).
I will emphasize that we were making groups with objects in them to find
out the final product or total. I will tell them about Splash math app that
they can use for multiplication practice at home.

ANALYZE
(This portion may only be done after the post assessment is
collected/scored.)

Describe the results of the Post-Assessment and be sure to address the following:
Students progress from pre-to-post assessment. (if applicable)
Factors that may have influenced the post assessment results.
How the results of the post assessment highlight what areas of the
lesson will require re-teaching (if any).
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph (below) that shows the post-assessment data
results. If you used the same document for both the pre and post assessments, it is strongly
encouraged that you show the comparison.

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Description:

REFLECT
List and describe two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction
(successes).

Two things that went well during my lesson was the hands-on portion,
when the student was able to work things out on paper and show me over

skype, the other was having a good plan for further practice.
List and describe two things you feel were challenges during the planning, implementation
and/or assessment of the lesson.

One major challenge was the student accessing YouTube on their own to
find the correct clip and then coming back after watching it. The students
parent had to help them find it. The other was making sure their hands-on
work was going ok, unless they verbally asked a question I could not see
what they were doing until they were all finished and showed me the
finished product. This resulted in having to redo a couple of problems
before moving on.
List and describe two ideas for redesign you would make if you were to teach this lesson
again.

Two ideas for redesign would be to find a program such as adobe connect
that students can access where I can share my screen, therefore making a
PowerPoint presentation of the material to cover, but still having hands-on
components. One downside to adobe connect is I cannot see the student
but they can see me. I know there is a way to do two-way viewing I just do
not have much experience using it. Another redesign would be having the
student sign up for splash math beforehand so I can get a general idea of
where they are at, but it can still be used as practice after the lesson as
well.
Key practices for distance learning included in my lesson are clear
directions and instructional materials available at the beginning of the
lesson and throughout the practice parts. An active student centered
learning by providing question and answer parts during the lesson and
having mental activities for them to do.
I also had a clear social presence during the lesson by maintaining eye
contact and talking to them if they having questions during the we do and
you do part of the lesson as promptly as possible. I also shared personal
examples during the I do part of the lesson. I also provided quality
assessment by having clear and specific feedback after the you do portion.
Teaching from a distance was more difficult in some ways as I could not
always see what the student was doing or the concrete materials, this
made feedback at times more difficult. Another difference was making sure
to hear clearly on both ends of Skype, sometimes these programs can be
buggy or have a bit of a delay. Many aspects were similar in that I can still
share media with the students its just different because the student
watches it alone and then comes back to the class instead of all watching
together.
