Artifact 4 - Literature Review

In this article, Code of Ethics for Educators, Mr. Sharkey discusses four Principles for
ethical conduct that educators should be aware of to ensure the rights of students and educators.
The first principle, ethical conduct towards the student, states that, the professional
educator, in accepting his or her position of public trust, measures success not only by the
progress of each student toward realization of his or her personal potential, but also as a citizen
of the greater community of the republic. This principle has five basic, but extremely important
concepts: teachers need to deal with each student fairly and resolve problems according to the
law or school policy; we do not expose students to disparagement; we do not reveal confidential
information regarding the student unless required by law; the teacher tries to provide a safe and
nurturing learning environment; and we do our best to present material without bias or personal
prejudice. It is so important to adhere to this principle so that students feel safe and cared for
rather than attacked. This will make for a more productive learning environment and a much
healthier classroom.
The second principle, ethical conduct towards practices and performances, states that,
the professional educator assumes responsibility and accountability for his or her performance
and continually strives to demonstrate competence. We, as teachers, are responsible for
maintaining our professional qualifications and continuing professional growth. We must also
comply with school policies as well as any laws and regulations in place. Teachers are
sometimes looked at as role models so it is important that we conform to this principle.
Ethical conduct toward professional colleagues is the third principle. Sharkey states that,
the professional educator, in exemplifying ethical relations with colleagues, accords just and

equitable treatment to all members of the profession. It is vital that as educators, we respect one
another and treat each other as we would like to be treated in return.
Lastly, the fourth principle, ethical conduct toward parents and community, says that,
the professional educator recognizes that quality education is the common goal of the public,
boards of education, and educators, and that a cooperative effort is essential among these groups
to attain that goal. This principle includes communication with parents and the acceptance of
cultural differences. It is also encouraged that teachers take on an active and positive role within
the community and school.
As a teacher, it is imperative that we abide by a code of ethics so that we earn the trust
and respect of our students, their parents, peers, and community. This will lead to a healthier and
happier learning environment where students feel safe and cared for and parents feel we are
doing our best to educate and nurture their children.
