PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING

My Learning Episode Overview

This episode is centered on time-tested principles of learning which when applied
will lead to effective learning. It is good to find out the manner and the extent to which
these principles are applied in the classroom.
My Intended Learning Outcome
In this Episode, I must be able to identify classroom practices that apply or violate
each of the principles of learning.
My Performance Criteria
I will be rated along the following:
a. quality of my observation and documentation,
b. completeness and depth of my analysis,
c. depth and clarity of my classroom observation-based reflections,
d. completeness, organization, clarity of my portfolio and
e. time of submission of my portfolio.
My Learning Essentials
Here are time-tested principles of learning:
1. Effective learning begins with setting clear expectations and learning
outcomes.
2. Learning is an active process. What I hear, I forget; what I see, I
remember; what I do, I understand.
3. Learning is the discovery of the personnel meaning of ideas. Students are
given the opportunity to connect what they learn with other concepts
learned, with real world experiences and with their own lives.
4. Learning is a cooperative and a collaborative process.

I will review the principles of learning given in

"My Learning Essentials".

I will observe a class

I will identify evidence of applications/violations

of the principles of learning. (You are given a
sample in #1 principle.) I cam cite more than one
evidence per principle of learning.

Guided by a question/questions, I will reflect on

my experience, write down my reflection.

Principles of Learning

Subject Area: MOTHER TONGUE

Nonapplication/Contradiction
of the Principle

Teacher writes her intended

learning outcome on the
board. She also motivates
the pupils by expressing
high expectations of them.

2. Learning is an active
process.

3. Learning is the
discovery of personal
meaning and
relevance of ideas.

Date: February 07,

What did the Resource Teacher do which

applies/contradicts the learning principle?
Application of the
Principle

1. Effective learning
begins with the
setting of clear and
high expectations and
learning outcomes.

Teachers Signature:

Teacher must be the one to

do the task first and letting
her pupils follow her in their
own desks.
Teacher lets the pupils
answer trial and error for
them to know the answers.

4. Learning is a
cooperative and a
collaborative process.
Learning is enhanced
in an atmosphere of
cooperation and
collaboration.

Teacher
makes
heterogeneous groups for
the pupils to work on with.
Pupils share their ideas and
it boosts their confidence
even if the answers are
wrong.

My Analysis
1. Which principle/s of learning was/were most applied?
Maam Visande mostly applied the principle Effective learning begins with the
setting of clear and high expectations and learning outcomes. Because every
time she teaches something, she motivates first the pupils. She constructs
activities that are suited for them and their abilities and lets them experience
the joy of their pride and confidence in learning new things. All of the
improvements of her pupils were recognized.
2. Which principle of learning was least applied? Why the principles was/were not
very much applied? Give instances where this/these principle/s could have been
applied.
Maam Visande least applied the principle Learning is a cooperative and a
collaborative process. Learning is enhanced in an atmosphere of cooperation
and collaboration. Because most of her activities were based individually like
individual seatwork in different subjects. She only apply this principle every
start and end of a subject.
3. How did the application of these learning principles affect learning?
If these learning principles werent conducted properly, then, the pupils
wouldnt learn anything new from the teacher. Pupils cannot develop
themselves and is not prepared to go to the next level of learning. Pupils might
lose their interest in learning and worst is dropping out to school.
4. How did the non-applicant of these learning principles affect learning?

The teacher really knows her pupils so even if she did the non-applicant of the
learning principles, the teacher thoroughly knows that her pupils can learn more
with her own style of teaching in lesson without using the application of the
learning principle.

My Reflections

it is very effective, but for some rare
cases, it is not always correct for the teacher must always know what to do for

Among
I observed,
which practices

which ones will

Practices worth adopting
I will really adopt a clear and high expectation outcome for my pupils to
be more motivated in learning new things from me. I will also adopt
cooperative and collaborative process for my pupils to learn in their peers

their self-esteem and curiosity in learning which also affects his/her

pupils diversity because they are all different in their personality,

cognitive and affective development, maturity, motivation, ability,
learning styles, needs and interest.
Practices to avoid and improve on
I will avoid ignoring the ideas of my pupils because it decreases and hurts

seatmates if he/she is not interested in the class. I must improve on

making feedbacks to improve themselves more. I will also not spoon fed
my pupils so that they will not depend on me but themselves. I will just
support and be the facilitator of their learnings.
Lessons learned
I learned that teachers have many ways in teaching their pupils, that it is

You may wish to state the principles of learning in your own words or

appropriate teaching styles.

It is using

It is also using whatever principles of

learning youll use for the pupils for there is no fixed rule regarding
which strategy is the best. It is also embracing and addressing the
needs of pupils with different learning styles. It is also making use of
diversified audio, visual or any presentations that the senses of the
pupils are involved for the full experience of learning the lessons and
most of all, it is to help pupils extend their learning by providing
lessons that are applicable in todays world.

INTENDED LEARNING
OUTCOMES/LESSON
OBJECTIVES AS MY
GUIDING STAR

My Learning Episode Overview

Intended learning outcomes/lesson objectives set the direction of the lesson.
For them to
serve as guiding star they must be SMART and formulated in accordance with timetested principles.
My Intended Learning Outcome
In this Episode, I must be able to:
Identify the guiding principles on lesson objectives/learning outcomes
applied in instruction
Determine whether or not lesson objectives/intended learning outcomes
served as guiding star in the lessons observed
Judge if lesson objectives/intended learning outcomes are SMART
My Performance Criteria

make it/them their own learning objectives or outcomes.
My Learning
Essentials
2. To make lesson objectives/intended learning outcomes very clear they
must be made Specific, Measurable, Attainable, result-oriented and Timebounded (SMART).
3. For meaningful teaching and learning, lesson objectives or intended
learning outcomes must integrate 2 or 3 domains-cognitive, skill and
affective or cognitive and affective or skill and affective.

My Map
I will observe three (3) different classes.
I will reflect on the guide questions given below.
To realize intended learning outcomes, I will follow these steps:

Step 1. Read the Learning Essentials given

above.

Step 2. Observe at least three (2) classes with a

learning partner. I will choose one class from each of the
three groups.
Group1-Language/Science/Math
Group 2-Physical Education,TLE, Araling Panlipunan,
Educkasyong Pagpapakatao
My focus this time is on lesson or learning
objectives/intended learning outcomes.

Step 3. Discuss my observation/answers to the

questions with my partner.

Step 4. Write down my answers to the questions.

Step 5. Reflect on my observation.

My Learning Activities

1. As I observe a class, I will use the Observation Sheet for a more focused
observation then analyze my observations with the help of guide questions then
reflect on my observations and answers.

Uses pronouns I and You

11.
Lesson objectives/Intended
Learning Outcomes are Specific,
Measurable, Attainable, resultoriented and Time-bounded (SMART)

Use the pronouns I and You

2. Ask permission from your resource Teacher for you to copy his/her lesson objective
for the days lesson. Did his/her lesson objectives serve as guiding star in the
sense that the development of the lessons was guided by his/her lesson
objectives/intended learning outcomes?
Yes, her lesson objectives served as a guiding star because the teacher
achieved her objectives and the pupils has a mastery level of 80% of the lesson.

My Analysis
1. Why is it sound teaching practice for a teacher to begin with the end in mind
and to share his/her lesson objectives or intended learning outcomes with
his/her students?
Because the teacher needs to think the end of her lessons for her to be
productive in her discussion with the pupils. The teacher needs to share her
objectives so that pupils are also aware of the things that the teacher is
teaching them and that they can also help to the teacher to an easy and
smooth discussion.
2. Did you find the lesson objective/s or intended learning outcome/s SMART?
Support your answer.
Yes, because the lesson objectives are not broad, can be learned within the
given of time and it is really appropriate to the lesson.
3. Do SMART objectives help the lesson become more focused?
Yes, because using SMART objectives makes the lesson more directed to the
path that is needed to take and with the help of SMART objectives, pupils can
learn more in a small period of time because the objectives are accurate and
concise.
4. Where the lesson objectives/intended learning outcomes in the cognitive,
psychomotor and affective domains? Support your answer.
Yes, because cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains lies on the different
activities that are given to the learners for them to develop their whole.
5. Is it necessary to have objectives always in the 3 domains-cognitive,
psychomotor and affective? Why or why not?

Yes, so that the pupils will develop the three domains in cognitive which is the
higher thinking order skill, psychomotor which is the coordination of mind and
body and affective for their values in their everyday living.

My Reflections
Any lesson learned or insights gained from your observation focused on
lesson objectives? Write them down here. Are lesson objectives truly the guiding
star in the development of a lesson? Or are lesson objectives sometimes
forgotten as the lesson develops?
For lesson objectives/learning outcomes to serve as guiding star in lesson
development, will it help if they are SMART?

Yes, because if the lesson objectives are SMART, it is specific,

measurable, attainable, result-oriented and time bounded, the lesson
objectives are concise and accurate. If it is specific, it is not broad and is
direct to the point, the learners will not be confused about the lesson and
the lessons are also achieved in the given time.

Does integrating lesson objectives/intended learning outcomes in the

three domains (cognitive, psychomotor and affective) or at least 2
(cognitive or psychomotor and affective) make lessons more meaningful?
Feel free to
add your
other
reflections.

In integrating the lesson objectives it must have the three domains

and not only two domains. Because in teaching the learners it must be
done as a whole teaching-learning process and not partly, so that the
learners will be developed into a whole being using the three domains.

My Learning Portfolio
Give one researched quotation that states the significance of goals and
objectives. (Dont forget to state your source)

Review your goals twice every day in order to be

focused on achieving them. - Les Brown

In one sentence, relate this quote to learning objectives/intended learning

Outcomes as guiding star in lesson development.

A teacher needs to review her goals twice or more everyday

so that he/she can get it into her thoughts and he/she can
think of more plans to do to make the lesson more fun and
engaging to the learners.
