L5 Activity: Planning for Experiential Learning

You have learned about the theory of situated learning, and have discussed some common
models for situated learning in your small group discussions.
This activity pertains to your future target job, by applying situated learning principles.
SITUATED LEARNING EXPLAINED
Based on your small group discussion board activity, define your understanding of situated
learning (first paragraph) and the various models that make use of the theory (second
paragraph). You should include 4 or more in-text citations and quotes from readings provided as
well as the resources shared in your small group discussions. Add these sources to the

In this weeks discussion, we learned about situated learning, Situated learning
is a theory on how individuals acquire professional skills (Wikipedia,2016). Within the
system of situated learning there are 8 models that expand on how this theory helps an
individual. Situated learning is used in both social and learning situations. Created by
Jean Lave and Eitenne Wenger situated learning is used as a model of learning in a
community practice, they argue that argue that learning should not be viewed as simply
the transmission of abstract and decontextualized knowledge from one individual to another,
but a social process whereby knowledge is co-constructed; they suggest that such learning
is situated in a specific context and embedded within a particular social and physical
environment (Wikipedia,2016). Situated learning is used to understand how one learning in
their environment.
Regarding the theories there are eight ranging from Andragogy to Shadowing each
one is a component of situated learning. Lets start with Andragogy is the theory and practice
of education of adults, within that theory there are five characteristics which are selfconcept, adult learner experience, readiness to learn, orientation to learning and motivation
to learn (Pappas,2013). An internship is a way for a student or future employer to gain
knowledge in their future target career, sometimes they are paid or school require it as well
which mean that you arent paid for it. Coaching is another theory, Coaching is a useful way
of developing peoples skills and abilities, and of boosting performance. (Mind tools,2016).
Service learning is used as a teaching technique that would allow student to apply their
knowledge and skills learning in the classroom to meaningful service to the community.

(ASU,2016). Communities of practice is described as groups of people who share a concern

of passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly
(Lave,2010). Shadowing is a method that will help students, employees or anyone gain
knowledge in their target related job and allow them to get an inside look at what that job will
entail.

ESTABLISH A SITUATED LEARNING GOAL

As an expert in teaching with technology, I would like to be more supportive and resourceful to
other facultyas a leader and a role model. I am interested in addressing this leadership goal
because I have had instructors from bioscience at ASU ask me to help them improve their
teaching, and that situation made me feel that I have not been visible enough in some of ways I
use technology in my teaching. I think this goal will help me expand my ability to support the use
of technology in teaching and learning from my current PreK-12 focus to a broader range, PreK20.
What area of your future target job do you feel most inadequate? Explain why you selected that
particular area. (75-100 words)

Regarding Situated learning an area that I feel Im lacking in my future target job is
service learning. The reason being is that I havent developed a sense of community
outside of the job. I know what the job entails when it comes to working in a facility but I
have found how I can benefit my community and what partnerships need my support. As
a future Site Supervisor, it is my responsibility to look after those in a center but I want to
expand my horizon and see how I can take my job to another level by contributing to my
community and its families.

in terms of 21st century competencies, more prepared for the specifics of a particular
organization, or a more qualified and cutting-edge professional in the job market? (100-125

I believe that by addressing this issue I will be better equipped to handle any
obstacles in my future target job as a Site supervisor. I will be knowledgeable not only
about what is going on inside of the facility with my colleagues and students but how the
community can be having either a positive or negative impact on them. Whichever may
be the case I would know who to turn to help me support them so they can do their job
well and ensure that students and parents are coming to school and participating. This

will bring everyone together and know that they can come to me for support and that
they also have the support of their community.

Situated learning will probably not address this goal in its entirety, but can support your
development in some ways. In what way(s) can your involvement in situated learning support
other activities you might participate in to more deeply support your development in this area?

Situated learning is a great way to improve your life, it will not only help me
be a better future educator but will help me in my personal life as well. The way situated
learning is set up it allows you to utilize all areas and I dont necessarily have to only use
one but can use all aspects depending on the situation that arises. I believe that it will
help become a more well-rounded individual it will also teach me thing I wasnt aware
that I could do well for example coaching is something I do in my everyday life especially
at work. I never knew who much of a positive impact it was making in others life as well
as mine. It also helps me when Im tutoring students afterschool, they are watching me
and everything that I do. It pushes me to make sure that I am a good example as well as
teaching them fundamental skills that will stick with them in their future.

Regarding situated learning I think it a great model to use especially as a
future educator. By applying Situated learning, learning is situated; that is, as it
normally occurs, learning is embedded within activity, context and culture. (Learning
Theories,2016). It teaches different strategies that can be used and how to use them, you
can pick from various models and not have to restrict yourself to only using one. By
utilizing all the models, I believe that it will make you a more well-rounded individual and
learn how to work with others. As stated in the article, Social interaction and
collaboration are essential components of situated learning, learners become involved in
a community of practice which embodies certain beliefs and behaviors to be acquired.
(Learning Theories,2016). This will help me build of what I already know and apply it to
my social interaction as well as help me learn how to collaborate better with others.

ENHANCE ENTREPRENEURIAL DEVELOPMENTAL NETWORK

What strategies will help you operationalize this plan while effectively enhancing your

Some of the strategies that will help me be more effective is enhancing my other
networks. By incorporating situated learning along with and entrepreneurial network it
will help me grow as an individual. It is desirable to have an entrepreneurial network
because you must have leadership mindset. As stated in the article, The strength of
such wide-ranging networks derives from their ability to bridge otherwise unconnected
clusters of people (Higgins,2001). Moving forward my goal is to become more involved
in my community by incorporating service learning activities into my routine. I feel that
by doing this in small increments it will allow me to introduce myself to my community
therefore they will feel more inclined to seek me out when I am out and about if they have
any question or comments. By being involved it will help me in my future career by being
aware of my surrounding and knowing the people that are coming into my centers with
their children. This will help me develop my network, thus enhancing my entrepreneurial
network as well. Regarding the article, Clearly, an individual can increase his or her own
sense of clarity in these areas in a variety of ways, including reading books, engaging in
research and writing and receiving formalized feedback at work, have suggested that
developmental relationships are critical to an individuals ability to find his or her own
path with a heart (Higgins,2001). I believe that by incorporating all these areas I will
become better at what I am going to do in my future and well-rounded as well.
