was an old man here just now who told us a good
story.
Manley: An old man? Here? But no one has come

This is the way to become a writer, he told him
self. A writer has to keep notes. One day 1 may be
able to write a book about these people who come to
the hotel. Who knows?.
Then a great thing happened to Richard. One night
when the hotel was full, a man came to sit at his
table. As they had dinner, the man talked about
many things. He talked a lot about the places that
he knew. At first he fd not talk much about himself.
Richard did not talk much at all. But he asked a
]ot of questions. He looked at the man's face with
care. He wanted to make notes about him in his

Fred Crane was a great talker.

other people, two men and a woman. ne of the
men, who was sitting next to the. window, put a
newspaper over his face as soon as the train Ieft

ready to talk.
For the first part of the joumey they talked about
many things. Only the man next to the window did
not take part. He slept with the newspaper over his
face. After a time the three bcgan to talk about

a doctor. :I work to save people's lives, not to make

Old Emma Lambert lived in a small

home

just

outside a town near London. She was an old woman

and she could not go out any more. Sometimes she
was ill or very tircd, and she had to stay in bed. She
did not sce very many people. A woman called Mrs
Mooney came and cleaned the house for her and
brought her some food, but most of the time old
Enma was alone.
He.r greatest friend was

small blue bird. it had a

white mark on its head. it lived in a bird cage in her

room, and 1t made a noise when

out of the bird cage. The noise sounded like talking.

Emma talked to the biro each day, and it answered
her with these noises. Emma loved the bird very
much. She called it Billy.
Near her house, people were building a lot of new
houses. Nearly all the people living in these houses
were young. Most of them had children.
One day, Mrs Mooney cleaned the bird cage, and
