Guided Step 3A - Check the EGR differential pressure tubes, adapter, and exhaust system for visible
leaks.

Turn keyswitch OFF.

Action
Check the EGR differential pressure tubes, adapter, and
exhaust system for visible leaks.
Leaks can be easily identified by traces of soot.
The EGR differential pressure tubes must not be removed,
however, the sensor can be removed to inspect the o-rings
between the EGR differential pressure sensor and the
adapter for proper sealing.

EGR Valve/Turbocharger Operational Test, the
ECM Calibration Software Phase must be checked
to see if it needs to be updated.
The ECM Calibration Phase Software can be
checked in INSITE electronic service tool under
Features and Parameters.
Expand the selection for System ID and Dataplate,
then go to Calibration Information.
ISX Engines with CM870 and ISM Engines with
CM875 built during and after January 2004 require
software phase 06050402 or greater from the
February 2007 INCAL DVD or newer.
ISX and ISM Engines with CM870 built before
January 2004 require software phase 05050000 or
greater from the April 2007 INCAL DVD or newer.

Tests and choose the EGR Valve Test.
Open and close the EGR valve to make sure the valve can
be fully opened and closed.
Set the EGR valve to the closed position, use INSITE
electronic service tool command: Close EGR Valve.

Wait for the EGR valve to fully close, then verify the
fully closed position.
Engage the PTO and raise the engine speed to
1400 50 rpm.
Monitor the EGR differential pressure sensor signal
voltage.

to 0.5-VDC or greater than or equal to 1.44-VDC?

the Extend Actuator position.
Use a straight edge steel ruler.
Measure the rod travel by measuring the
distance from the base of the variable
geometry actuator to the scribe mark.

The turbocharger actuator must move quickly and


crisply. If the actuator rod movement is slow, there
can be a problem with the air supply, a faulty ground
connection on the engine or chassis, or mechanical
problems with the variable geometry turbocharger
assembly.

must extend between 10 and 12 mm [0.394
and 0.472 in].

For ISX engines, the turbocharger actuator rod must


extend between 10 and 12 mm [0.394 and 0.472 in].
For ISM engines, the turbocharger actuator rod must
extend between the minimum and maximum actuator travel
specification found in the CPL table in the Shop Talk

A small amount of air can be heard from the turbocharger
control valve during the turbocharger actuator test. This is a
normal condition for the valve to achieve output regulation
pressure. Do not replace the turbocharger control valve for
this condition.

Turbocharger Actuator Test. Select the Extend
