The Shot Heard 'Round the World

April 20, 1775-So much has happened in the past few days that my head
is spinning! A revolution has started. Sometimes I feel very frightened. I
worry about my brother because he is angry about how the British have
been treating the colonies. He's a Patriot, and he wants the colonies to
become an independent country. He has no patience at all for Loyalists
who want to remain part of Great Britain. My brother was so upset he
decided to fight.
The minutemen seemed no match for the British. They weren't armed like
the British, and they didn't even wear uniforms! My brother went to battle
in his work clothes! Many of the farmers and townspeople around here
joined him. These men are called minutemen because they can be ready to
fight in a minute.
There were many more British soldiers than minutemen. Still, the
minutemen were angry, and they believed in the cause so much, that they
must have scared the British soldiers who started to retreat! As the British
marched back to Boston, more and more minutemen came to stop them.
The minutemen showed that they could stand up to the British! And, much
to my relief, my brother came home safely from battle. He said that the
first minuteman to use his gun had fired "the shot heard 'round the world."
