Title of Lesson: Importance of Exercise

This is a class of first grade students. Their ages range from 6 to 7 years old. The reading ability of six students is
below grade level and will require the teacher to read aloud her presentation. Echo reading is a technique used with
the whole class to reinforce the content being learned.
What is the importance of
exercise? Why should we exercise

Assessment description:
Students will rotate to different
exercise stations and perform the
exercise they are asked to. Students
will rotate through four stations with
activates including jumping jacks,
crunches, toe touches, and burpees.
Students will exercise at each station
for 30 seconds each.
Assessment accommodations:
The teacher will read aloud all
passages, directions, and questions.

Pre-Assessment of Prior
Knowledge:
Question/answer session guided
PowerPoint presentation. This will
activate prior knowledge and let the
teacher know what the students
already know about the importance of
exercise and daily physical activity.
* I will use Whole Brain Learning
strategies to better control behavior
and maintain focus.
Strategy/Activity:
Exercise stations will be set up around
the classroom for the students to
rotate through. Students will engage
in accountable talk about the
exercises they are performing and
why exercise is important.
Activity Adaptations:
The teacher will read aloud all
passages, directions, and questions.
Media/Technology/Resources:
The teacher will show a PowerPoint to
help activate prior knowledge and

introduce new vocabulary.

Objective # 2:
The students will be able to draw a
picture of an activity that improves
their fitness level.

Assessment description:
Students will complete a physical
activity handout. Students will draw
themselves performing an activity
that they believe will improve their
fitness level.
Assessment accommodations:
The teacher will read aloud all
passages, directions, and questions.

Strategy/Activity:
After completing the handout
students will use accountable talk to
discuss their activity and how it could
improve their health.
Activity Adaptations:
The teacher will read aloud all
passages, directions, and questions.
Media/Technology/Resources:
Fitness handout.

Teacher Procedures:
The teacher will show a PowerPoint on the Importance of Exercise to the class in order to activate prior knowledge and
capture the students attention. The teacher will then echo read objective #1 with the students. The teacher will then
explain the first activity for the students to complete. The first activity is exercise rotation stations. There will be four
rotation stations for the students to perform an exercise at for 30 seconds. The teacher will time the students and tell
them when it is time to rotate to the next station. The teacher will then initiate accountable talk with the students
about different exercises and the importance of daily physical activity. The teacher will then echo read objective #2
with the students. The teacher will give the students a fitness handout. The students will draw a picture of themselves
performing an activity that improves their fitness level. Several students will stand and explain the activity they drew
and why it is important to exercise daily.
