Corrigan, Patrick W., Benjamin G. Druss, and Deborah A. Perlick. "The Impact of Mental Illness
Stigma on Seeking and Participating in Mental Health Care." Association for
Psychological Sciences. APS, 1 Aug. 2014. Web. 1 Nov. 2016.
(Corrigan)
This source is an article that talked about the effects of mental illness stigma have on people
seeking help for mental illness. The source can be used to support our argument that media has a
negative effect on people with mental illness. It says that the stereotypes associated with mental
illness lead people to feel can lead to discrimination, which make sufferers of mental illness less
likely to seek help. Then people with mental illness also begin to believe the stigmas that other
believe. This article does not have any major weaknesses other than it does not show examples
specific mental illnesses that it happens to. I definitely plan on using this source in my paper
because it is exactly to point we are trying to prove in our paper. The source is also credible
because it was published by credible psychology association.

Depression. n.d. WebMD. 1 November 2016

(Depression)
The purpose of the source is to inform people on the uses of ECT or Electroconvulsive Therapy
as a treatment for depression. The article mostly talked about current uses for it and barely

Reed 2
mentioned what ETC used to be used for. Another drawback is that the page lacks credibility,
though the website is legitimate there is not author and no one to be held accountable if the
information is incorrect. I do not plan on using this source in my project, because it is not very
informative and I have found more informative sources that go into more depth than this one.

Dombeck, Mark, Natalie Staat Reiss, and Rashmi Nemade. "Historical Understandings Of
Depression." Mental Help Historical Understandings of Depression Comments.
CenterSite, 19 Sept. 2007. Web. 8 Nov. 2016.
(Dombeck)
The purpose of this source is inform about the history of mental illness, specify depression. The
source could be used to understand the roots of some stigmas about mental health. Like in
Ancient Greece it was treated like you had been possessed by a demon, which some people still
believe (to some extent) today. The limits of the source are that it only goes to the 1600s so
nothing that was said is applicable to today. A weakness is that it did not connect anything to the
present day. I plan on using a little bit of this source in my paper like depression was initially
called "melancholia". I think that this source is credible, because it is organized by an education
facility that has access to lots of knowledge and references.

Elliot, Rogers, Tyrell, Mark. "Treating Depression : What Treatment Actually Works?" Clinicaldepression.co.uk. Uncommon Knowledge, n.d. Web. 8 Nov. 2016.
(Elliot)
The purpose of this source is to inform about recent research in possible treatments of
depression. The use of the source is to see what kind of treatments can be used to treat

Reed 3
depression. The source talks about what forms of treatment there is like prescription or therapy.
The limitation is that the source did no name specific drugs or therapies used. A strength is that it
is geared towards modern day treatment on depression and it is up to date. I plan on using this
source to look more in depth about the types of drugs and therapies used to treat depression. This
source does have the potential to be bias, because it was a corporation and they could be trying to
advance their interests.

Fawcett, Kirsten. "How Mental Illness Is Misrepresented in the Media." US News. U.S.News &
World Report, 16 Apr. 2015. Web. 8 Nov. 2016.
(Fawcett)
This source is an article about how the media misrepresents mental illness. The potential use for
this source is to help support our argument that the media has a negative effect on mental health.
It talks about the difference mental popular belief and scientific fact, the disparity stems from the
media and their portrayal of mental health. One weakness is that this article is one-side, it does
not show an opposing view. I think this source is credible, because it was posted on a credited
news source, though it may be bias.

Irby, Samantha. Black Girls Dont Get to Be Depressed. Cosmopolitan 2015 Dec. 14: n. pag.
Print.
(Irby)
This source is a magazine article that chronicles a black womans struggle with depression:
particularly realizing she had a mental illness. It talked about the stigma of depression being a
white people problem and the rejection she would face if she had depression and she was

Reed 4
black. This source can be used to support that media does affect people seeking help for mental
illness. The weakness is it only talks about one persons struggle with stigmas created by the
media. I do plan on using this in my project, because I can use her story as an anecdote. I think
this source is credible, because she is talking about her experience with the stigmas, so it is firsthand account.

Mental Health Disorders. n.d. Foundation Recovery Network. 8 November 2016.

(Mental Health Disorders)
The source is an article is to provide historical background on the treatment of mental health. The
information spanned from the 1800s to the 2000s. It tells about how people with mental illness
were originally treated and the difference it the older treatment leading up to present day. The
source does not say what every landmark in mental illness is, but rather summarizes the major
changes in treatment philosophy. Also, the source does not go into much detail about the
treatments that are used. However, the source does give a large timeline with sufficient
explanation. I do not plan on using this source in the paper directly, rather as an avenue to know
what I should research more in depth about. The source could also have a bias, because the
website is for an organization that works on the treatment of mental health. So some of the
information could exaggerate the treatment of mental health.

Sign and Symptoms of Depression. n.d. National Institute of Health. 6 November 2016.
(Sign and Symptoms of Depression)

Reed 5
The source is a health website meant to inform about the sign and symptoms of depression. It
tells the various signs of depression and goes into depth about every signs of depression in a
loved one. The source is limited, because the page is made specifically for men's health, so it
does not apply to everyone. The weakness of this source is that it does not go into as much detail
as they could go into. This people help normal people see the signs of depression. I plan on using
this source in the project because there was useful information about general signs of depression,
while also giving advisories like "Not everyone who is depressed experiences every symptom.
Some people experience only a few symptoms; some people suffer many." The source is credible
because it is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Stresing, Diane. "Depression in the Media." EverydayHealth.com. Everyday Health Media, 2010.
Web. 13 Nov. 2016.
(Stresing)
The purpose of this article was to talk about the medias depiction of depression vs what actual
depression is like. The use of this source is to see the types of stigma that is created by the media
and how that leads to the dissemination of misinformation about depression. The limitations of
the source are that it does not give you the ways media does correctly about depicting
depression. I plan on using this source to further research examples of this misinformation in the
media. I do not think this source is very susceptible to bias, because it is purely medical.

Szasz, Thomas. The Myth of Mental Illness: Foundations of a Theory of Personal Conduct. New
York: Harper & Row, 1974. Print.
(Szasz)

Reed 6
This source is a book that talks about how the idea of mental illness is not real and how
psychiatrists and psychiatrys legitimacy was questionable. Szasz did not believe that there was
such thing as mental illness, and that the problem was not with peoples minds, rather people
chose to act inappropriately. One weakness is that his hypothesis is not well supported. A
limitation is that this book was written a quarter of a decade ago. I do not plan on using this
source in my project, because I do not believe in it. This is not a credible source; it is well known
that mental illness is a result of a chemical imbalance in the suffers brain.
