Once you create an account, click on visit my room now.
If you click on room options on the top of the page, there is an option to send invites to
other people that you want to join the room as well.
You can upload files, such as images, Powerpoints, pdfs, and word documents, add a
website snapshot, and add a flickr image for the whole group to see. You can do this by
clicking on the assets tab to the right side of the page.
Also, there is a chat log where you can discuss with your other group members.

Positives and
challenges of using

In the middle of the screen, the group in the chat room is allowed to create an image
together on a whiteboard using a pencil, smooth pencil, eraser, text, line, rectangle, circle,
triangle, polygon, highlighter, and stamps. In the end, there is a button that allows you to
export your image to a pdf form or take a snapshot, before creating another one. There is a
clear page button as well.
Scribblar can be used with group activities amongst the students in your class. Based off the
SOL 4.7 under Earth patterns, cycles, and change, the student will investigate and
understand the organization of the solar system. Key concepts include: a) the planets in the
solar system; b) the order of the planets in the solar system; and c) the relative sizes of the
planets. Therefore, with this SOL, the students can use this collaborative tool to create a
solar system using the drawing tools provided. They can add in images of each planet or
draw them, order them in the correct order, and add in their sizes. Based off the SOL 4.5
under living systems, the student will investigate and understand how plants and animals,
including humans, in an ecosystem interact with one another and with the nonliving
components in the ecosystem. Key concepts include: c) flow of energy through food webs.
Therefore, the students could work together to create an example of a food web on the
white board and show how energy would flow through their particular web. Based off the
SOL 5.1 under Scientific Investigation, Reasoning, and Logic, the student will demonstrate
an understanding of scientific reasoning, logic, and the nature of science by planning and
conducting investigations in which: d) hypotheses are formed from testable questions;
e) independent and dependent variables are identified; f) constants in an experimental
situation are identified; g) data are collected, recorded, analyzed, and communicated using
proper graphical representations and metric measurements; h) predictions are made using
patterns from data collected, and simple graphical data are generated; and i) inferences are
made and conclusions are drawn. Therefore, this web 2.0 would work well with this SOL
because the students can work together to design an experiment on the white board, where
the group comes up with a hypothesis, independent and dependent variable, and the
constants, and then each student conducts the experiment on their own to collect data;
however, after they complete the experiment, the students can compare their data to draw a
conclusion all together on the whiteboard. By getting the students to complete activities in
groups on this collaborative tool, you are checking for understanding on the lesson before
you move on.
A positive about this web 2.0 collaborative tool is that it has a white board in the middle of
the screen that everyone in the group can draw/create on together. Also, it is great that you

can snapshot or save the white board creation as a pdf because snapshots and pdfs are easier
to email to your teacher, so she can see what your group created, since only three people
can be in the room. One negative about this tool is that you can only have three people in
each room, without paying. Also, you can only have a maximum of three rooms unless you
pay. This is a disadvantage if you want your students to work on multiple activities at once
or if you want them to keep previous rooms for reference. Furthermore, another positive is
the chat log because it allows you to discuss with your fellow group members, while
working on the activity assigned. Finally, the site is user friendly, and it didnt seem to have
anything too complex.

You click on get started which is how you create an account. After you create an account,
you click on create a new diagram and then you pick a template based off the topic. Then,
you can add color and text to your template using the top right bar. By clicking the green
button on the top that says, share, you can add other people to the assignment by putting
in their email addresses and then clicking invite once you are finish.
She talks about how you can use this tool to create a flow chart at the kindergarten level to
show and explain the different stages of the water cycle. Then, she says you could use this
tool in third grade, where the students create a chart identifying the reasons for exploring
and the results of the travels. Furthermore, she even discusses how this tool could be used
in 12th grade to create a chart to list the authors purpose and the effect on audience.
The positives were that the site was easy to navigate, adding people are easy and fast, and
the site has many template options. The negatives were that creating an account using an
email is difficult for kindergarteners, since they may not have an email address, and that the
site is not free to use.

Once you are at the site, you click create new pad. Then a pad pops up with some
introduction instructions on it, which is on the left. On this pad, where you will work, you
can highlight, italicize, change font color, bold, and underline your typing on the pad. You
can communicate with other group members in the lower right hand corner, but you invite
the other group members by sending a link through their email.
She discussed how in 3rd grade they could use the tool to discuss the kinds of simple
machines and how they work. Furthermore, she talked about how in 5th grade you can have
the students use this tool to work together to write an essay, where they discuss the setting,
characters, and plot, about a book they are reading in class.
The positives are that it is easily accessible with a link or email, there are reminders for
students to participate, and there are many options on what you can do with the text within
the activity. The negatives are that this tool is more accessible for older students, you need
an email to participate, so if you do not have on this could be a problem, and some of the
buttons are not clearly labeled so you do not know what they would do to your activity.

From this ODU webpage https://online.odu.edu/policies-and-student-responsibilities copy the Honor Pledge below to
make the promise that you have met online as instructed in a face-to-face virtual environment (e.g. Skype or Google
Hangouts) to complete this assignment.
