SLO Assignment 2

I have decided to use my most recent lab report from my Chemistry 1251 lab to focus on
student learning outcomes. Throughout writing it and now looking back on what I wrote, I can
see that I used many different student learning outcomes. I used knowledge of conventions,
critical reflection, and composing processes.
Throughout this lab report, there was a certain knowledge of conventions that was to be
followed in order to correctly complete the lab report. As many people who have written lab
reports know, when writing your procedure, you have to write in a past tense tone while avoiding
personal pronouns which can get very difficult at some points. Additionally, throughout the
whole lab report, it is required that you speak in a passive voice.
Having to look back on the lab report and the actual lab itself, I know that I used critical
reflection. Reflecting on the lab, I was required to address any errors that myself or my lab
partner may have done, what they might have been, and what the effects of those errors could
have been. This was especially difficult because we couldnt give a simple answer like human
error.
Throughout the lab report, there were many instances where I had to show my composing
processes. For example, I had to show all equations that I used to get all the data in the report.
Along with showing all equations and my actual calculations, I had to provide sample equations
in order to further show that I had performed them all and had not just copied them from my lab
partner.
If there were any SLOs that I could have used but did not, I think I could have used
rhetorical knowledge. Even though this was my first time completing a lab report, I feel that I
could have used rhetorical knowledge of how to properly write in a past tense tone by looking at
some of my past papers or assignments and pulled examples or strategies from them.
In some instances, I feel that SLOs do in fact come into my life. Almost every day, I feel
myself using knowledge of conventions when I am texting or emailing whomever. When
emailing or texting a professor or someone of authority, I make sure I use an appropriate
greeting, proper spelling, grammar, and wrap it up with a proper ending. When I am texting my
friends, I find myself not being as strict with my grammar or spelling and I tend to use
abbreviations.
Now that I look upon my relationship with my girlfriend or if I did poorly on an
assignment or a test, I know I can use critical reflection. With my girlfriend, I can use critical
reflection when I say or do something wrong that may upset her to correct what I did and make
sure it doesnt happen again. Likewise, with a test or assignment, I can use critical reflection to
correct a mistake or fix a problem to ensure that I do better on the next test or assignment.
