thickness is 6 mm.

3. A 5.31 horsepower rating no. 40 roller chain has an input through a 12-tooth sprocket
turning at 1,800 rpm and the output turns at 900 rpm. Determine
a. the length of chain in inches,
b. the recommended minimum center to center distance
c. diameter of small and larger sprockets.

4. Compute the actuation force required of different lever designs shown in figure b and c
for the short shoe drum brake of figure to produce a friction torque of 150 lb-ft. Use a drum
diameter of 12.0 in, a= 4.0 in, and L= 24.0 in.

5. Design a long shoe drum brake to produce a friction torque of 100 lb-ft to stop a load
from 480 rpm. Specify the friction material, the drum size, the shoe configuration, pivot
locations, and actuation force.

6. A temporary construction elevator is to be designed to carry workers and materials to a


height of 90 ft. The maximum estimated load to be hoisted is 5000 lb f at a velocity not to
exceed 2 ft/s. For a minimum sheave diameters and acceleration of 4ft/s 2, specify the
number of ropes required if the 1-in plow-steel 6x19 hoisting strand is used.

7. A 2000-ft hoist operates with a 72-in drum using 6x19 monitor-steel wire rope. The cage
and load weigh 8000 lbf, and the cage is subjected to an acceleration of 2ft/s 2 when starting.
(a) For a single strand hoist how does the factor of safety n=Ff/Ft vary with the choice of
rope diameter.
(b) For four supporting strands of wire ropes attached to the cage, how does the factor of
safety vary with the choice of rope diameter?

8. A 60-hp four-cylinder internal combustion engine is used to drive a brick-making


machine under a schedule of two shifts per day. The drive consists of two 26-in sheaves
spaced about 12 ft apart, with a sheave speed of 400 rev/min. Select a V-belt arrangement.
Find the factor of safety, and estimate the life in passes and hours.

9. A single V-belt is to be selected to deliver engine power to the wheel-drive transmission


of a riding tractor. A 5-hp single-cylinder engine is used. At most, 60 percent of this power
is transmitted to the belt. The driving sheave has a diameter of 6.2 in, the driven, 12.0 in.
The belt selected should be as close to a 92-in pitch length as possible. The engine speed is
governor-controlled to a maximum of 3100 rev/min. Select a satisfactory belt and assess the
factor of safety and the belt life in passes.

10. A double-strand no. 60 roller chain is used to transmit power between a 13-tooth driving
sprocket rotating at 300 rev/min and a 52-tooth driven sprocket.
(a) What is the allowable horsepower of this drive?
(b) Estimate the center-to-center distance if the chain length is 82 pitches.
(c)Estimate the torque and bending force on the driving shaft by the chain if the actual
horsepower transmitted is 30 percent less than the corrected (allowable) power.

11. A shaft 1.5 m long is supported on two bearings. It carries two gears A and B at 0.5 m
and 1.0 m from the left hand bearing of pitch circle diameters 400 mm and 200 mm
respectively. Gear A is driven at 350 rpm from the top by another gear and receives 5 kW
power. Gear B drives another gear horizontally. If the yield tensile strength of the shaft is
480 Mpa, determine the diameter of the shaft as ASM code. Assume Km = 2.0 and Kt = 1.5.

12. A steel shaft is supported on bearings 1.0 m apart. Power is transmitted to the shaft by a
belt running on a 500 mm diameter pulley A which overhangs to the right of the right
bearing by 300 mm. Another pulley B, 200 mm in diameter, is located midway between
bearings. 10 kW power is transmitted from the shaft by a belt running on pulley B. The ratio
of belt tensions is 3. The shaft runs at 600 rpm. The material properties are: Sut = 640 Mpa,
Syt = 410 Mpa. Determine the shaft diameter if the belt drives are at the right angles.

13. A steel shaft is subjected to a torque varying from 120 N.m to 360 N.m and a bending
moment varying from 220 N.m to 440 N.m. Determine the shaft diameter if it ultimate
tensile strength is 540 Mpa and tensile yield strength is 420 Mpa. A factor of safetyt of 2 is
desired. Fatigue stress-concentration factor is 1.25.

14. The shaft of an axial flow rotary compressor is subjected to a maximum torque of 2.5
kN.m and a maximum bending moment of 5 kN.m. The combined shock and fatigue factors
in torsion and bending are 1.5 and 2.0 respectively. Determine the diameter of the shaft if
the permissible shear stress in the shaft is 55 Mpa. What percentage saving in material shall
be obtained if a hollow shaft is designed ?

15. A shaft is subjected to the combined action of bending and torsion. The maximum
bending moment is 400 N.m, and the maximum torque is 300 N.m. Calculate the diameter
of the shaft based on maximum shear stress theory if the permissible shear stress shaft is 80
Mpa.

16. A 10 m long shaft weighing 25 kN/m is fitted with a pulley A of 1.215 m diameter at a
distance of 1.5 m and a gear B of 500 mm diameter at a distance of 5 m from the left hand
bearing. The driving gear situated vertically below delivers 75 kW to the gear B. The shaft
runs at 600 rpm. The ratio of belt tensions on the pulley is 2.5. Pulley A drive another pulley
situated vertically below it. Calculate the diameter of the shaft if the allowable shear stress
is 60 MPa. The shock and fatigue factors in bending and torsion are 1.5 and 1.25
respectively.

17. A cylindrical shaft, made of steel of yield strength 760 Mpa, is subjected to a static load
consisting of bending moment of 15kN.m and a torsional moment of 25 kN.m. Determine
suitable diameter of shaft using maximum shear stress theory and maximum strain energy
theory, assuming a factor of safety 2.5. (Take E = 200 GPa and Poisson's ratio = 0.25)

18. A line shaft rotating at 200 rpm is to transmit 200 kW. The allowable shear stress for the
material of the shaft is 42 MPa. If the shaft carries a central load of 900 N and is simply
supported between bearing 3 m apart, determine the diameter of the shaft. The maximum
tensile or compressive stress is not to exceed 56 MPa.
