I.

Unit Objective:

This lesson is the fourth part of Unit Three where students learn about notable and
influential people who changed history.
In this particular lesson, students will study one of the most influential leaders in history,
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
We are approaching Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.s 88th birthday this January, so students
will spend some class time reflecting back on the impact he had on both the history of
Tennessee as well as the United States.
The goal of this lesson is for students to research and reflect on the legacy Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. left on this world, primarily in the state of Tennessee. Students will
explore key events from his life and then create a graphic organizer displaying those
events and lifelong contributions.
II.

Lesson Objective:

III.

Given multiple Internet resources, the student will be able to identify and record at least
six major events regarding the impact and legacy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had on
Tennessee State History with 80% accuracy.
Standards:

State/District, Common Core Standards:

2nd Grade History:
2.32 Participate in shared research using biographies to interpret the significance of
contributions made by Martin Luther King Jr, recounting or describing key ideas and
details from the texts.
2.35 Select major events from texts to place sequentially on a timeline to show the
sequence and main ideas of events in history.

ISTE Standard:
Creativity and Innovation:

IV.

Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative

products and processes using technology.
A) Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products or processes.
B) Create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
The use of a graphic organizer allows students to be creative while organizing their
thoughts and ideas.
Research and Information Fluency:
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
A) Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a
variety of sources and media.
B) Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness
to specific tasks.
Materials:

Classroom projector to watch the YouTube videos

YouTube URLs:

Computers for student access (1 computer for every 2 students)
Access to the Internet for research
Access to Microsoft Word for the outline
Access to Kidspiration to create a graphic organizer
Technology Integration:
Technology will be integrated into this activity by first allowing students to listen and follow along to a
Picture Audiobook about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Students will then watch a short video about why
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to Memphis, Tennessee. These two videos will be watched using a
classroom projector. After watching these two videos from YouTube, students will go to the computers
to research about Martin Luther King Jr. As students are researching, they will complete an outline on
the computer using Microsoft Word. After they have completed the outline, they will then create a
graphic organizer using the program, Kidspiration. A student sample can be found below on page 12.
V.

Background and Rationale:

Students will display their understanding of key events that occurred in Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr.s life by creating a graphic organizer using a program called Kidspiration.
Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 3600.
This lesson specifically looks at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his effect on Tennessee
History.
This lesson also includes two Tennessee State Standards and two ISTE Standards. Both are
listed above.

This lesson begins with a brief biography regarding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life before
jumping into why he came to Memphis, TN. I designed the lesson plan this way because
some second grade students may not be as familiar with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as other
students might be. After a brief review/study of who Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was, students
will then research why he came to Memphis, TN.
I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the
objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in
this course and are not part of this particular lesson.
Following this assignment, students will fully understand the life and legacy of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. After this assignment, we will be taking a field trip to the National Civil
Rights Museum to conclude our study on influential people who changed history.
VI.

Introduction: (12 minutes)

Today we will be concluding Unit Three in our Social Studies Textbook.

In Part 1, we discussed Rosa Parks and her strong efforts to end segregation. In Part 2, we discussed
Harriet Beecher Stowe and how her words and writings changed the world. Last week in Part 3, we
studied Harriet Tubman and her journey to free enslaved people through the Underground Railroad.
Today, we will be concluding our study with another powerful civil rights activist.
This man led non-violent protests and was determined to seek justice and equality for all people
regardless of their skin color. Does anyone know who we might be studying? Yes, today we will be
exploring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Did you all know that MLK came to Memphis, TN to
give one of his speeches. His speech here in Memphis was called Ive Been to the Mountaintop and
we will learn more about it later. Now most people are familiar with the speech he gave in Washington,
D.C. called, I Have a Dream.
Now for a quick activity, we are going to brainstorm some of your dreams. What is your dream
for this world? What is your dream for yourself? Maybe your dream for this world is that all
children could go to school and learn. Maybe your dream for yourself is to become a doctor and
help save people. Well, MLK dreamed of a world where there was peace and equality for all.
With those ideas in mind, lets begin our lesson on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

along with your MLK graphic
organizer for grading.

VIII. Closure: (7 minutes)

After all assignments have been collected, allow students to share their final thoughts regarding MLK.
Ask students what they enjoyed about this assignment and what they wish could be different for next
time. For discussion, ask students again why MLK came to Memphis, TN. Today, even 48 years after
his death, what do we remember him for? Explain to students that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. wanted
justice and equality for all people, and that without his significant influence, the state of Tennessee and
history as a whole might have looked much differently. MLK was a normal civilian who changed the
history forever.
Some ways Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has influenced Tennessee History:
o He fought for economic and human equality for all individuals.
o He came to Memphis to support the poorly treated African American sanitation workers.
o He fought for union recognition in his Ive Been to the Mountaintop speech in
Memphis.
o He fought for peace and non-violence in our nation.

o His significant impact on Civil Rights Movement.

o His courage and determination ensured that the voice of the minority mattered.
o The Civil Rights Museum displays the legacy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left.
***To finish, congratulate students for their great effort and work on this assignment. Remind them that
tomorrow they will be closing Unit 3 by taking a class field trip to the National Civil Rights Museum.
