Recommendations and Requirements

The following requirements and practices are recommended when using the Multi-Select Multi-Launch
Annotate Action feature of Brava for Webtop:

Internet Explorer 8 Requirement

Internet Explorer 8 is required when using the Multi-Select Multi-Launch Annotate Action feature
in Brava Webtop (older versions of Internet Explorer are not supported).
This Internet Explorer 8 limitation is due to the limited threading models used in previous versions
of IE. This limited threading model results in hanging, crashing, and failures of files to properly
load in the Brava Client, making previous versions of IE unsuitable.

Brava Client Installation

Prior to using the Multi-Select Multi-Launch Annotate Action for the first time, you will need to
ensure the Brava client ActiveX control has been downloaded to the users Documents and Settings
folder. This can be accomplished by loading a single file in IE which will automatically download
the Brava client.
If the install of the Brava client has not been run and the Multi-Select Multi-Launch Annotate
Action is used, the Brava client will need to be installed for each new IE Window or Tab. This will
take an unexpectedly long time as the client files are overwritten with the next window/tab selected.

Five File Limitation

Because the Multi-Select Multi-Launch Annotate Action opens a group of files at the same time it
is recommended that no more than 5 files be selected and opened.
Due to limited resources on the client and Internet Explorer 8s thread-handling abilities, opening
more than 5 files at once can and does dramatically slow the responsiveness of IE 8 and the most
current average desktop systems.

Improving Responsiveness
Users may report slow and/or unresponsiveness behavior when using the Multi-Select Multi-Launch
Annotate Action option to open files in Brava from Webtop.
This may be due to Client Side loading (file processing) verses Server Side (file Processing). By
default, file types such as PDF, TIFF, most common image formats that are under 2MB are processed
on the client system for displaying in the Brava client. Selecting and opening 3 files of an average file
size of 1MB or 5 files at 512kb is typically not an issue. However, because PDF document complexity

and variations in the PDF files it may be necessary to turn off Client Side Loading (so these files are
processed on the server side) to improve the responsiveness of the Client systems.

Loading Files
It is not possible to navigate to tabs or windows opened by the Brava Webtop Multi-Select MultiLaunch Annotate Action while they are still loading.
Due to the threading model in Internet Explorer 8, users must wait for all of the tabs to load before IE
will switch between Tabs. Loading more than the recommend number of files will cause Internet
Explorer to become unresponsive.

Common Issues

Issue: Files do not open, but a gray blank Brava client screen is shown.
Solution: This is typically the result of an incorrect configuration of Brava Webtop. It is very
important to set the parameter EnableXDLThreading= to False in both the
brava_prameters.properties file and in the ServerPrecedents.Properties files. Failing to update
the EnableXDLThreading= parameter in both files will result in the issue described above.

Issue: Client systems are very slow to load all the files selected and opened using the Brava
Webtop Multi-Select Multi-Launch Annotate Action.
Solution(s):
o Verify that IE 8 is being used on the Client systems.
o Check to see how many files the user was attempting to open using the Brava Webtop
Multi-Select Multi-Launch Annotate Action. If more than the recommended limit of
5was attempted, additional usage training may be needed.
o Reduce the Max file size of the files being converted with the
ClientLoadedMaxFileSize parameter.
o Disable the ConvertOnClient option.
