6. Assessment Methods of
all objectives/skills:

The students will know how to read a table of contents and be able to interpret
what page a topic is on.
The students will know how to compare languages and traditions of Germany
to the USA, furthermore they will be able to understand different cultures
from around the world.
The table of contents is very important to reading. The table of contents
usually includes the title or descriptions, such as chapter titles in longer
works. The depth of detail in the table of contents depends on the length of
work. The table of contents is usually found on the title page. Printed table of
contents indicate page numbers where each page starts. The table of contents
is needed to navigate through a textbook or chapter book, so you do not need
to search for a specific topic you are looking for.
Ask the students have they ever looked at a table of contents
Ask the students if they know how to use one before
Show the students the example of the Germany table of contents

Valerie and I will be going to study abroad in Germany in three weeks, isnt
that exciting?
We are going to study abroad and go to elementary schools so we can be the
best teachers we can be.
Germany is in the country called Europe and the capital of Germany is Berlin.
The people in Germany are called Germans, and they speak German. Some of
the typical foods that you will see in Germany are pretzels, sausage, and
potato salad with meatballs. Here, in America, our biggest meal of the day is
dinner. In Germany, they eat their biggest meal of the day at lunch time. A
tradition that Germans celebrate is called Oktoberfest. Oktoberfest is a 16-day
festival in Munich. People come from all over the world to celebrate it. When
they celebrate, they eat a lot of sausages and chicken breast. The flag colors
are black, yellow, and red.
The students will practice using the table of contents and locating certain
texts. For example, we will say find the page that has the passage about The
foods of Germany and they will have to identify the page and turn to it. We
will go over how to read a table of contents with the students by conducting a
review of what we just talked about with them before and make a sample. We
will draw a paper on the board and label the top Table of Contents. After
15
that, we will write in a few sample page titles and page numbers to follow
minutes
along with the activity. Then, as a class, we will ask a question like, if I am
trying to find the section called Food in Germany, what page number would
that be on?
We would keep asking the students questions like If I am on page 6, what
topic would I be reading about?
The teacher came up with a sample table of contents about Germany and the
traditions, foods, and language that they speak. The students will be
completing a worksheet while we walk around the room assisting with any
questions that they have. The worksheet will be one like the guided practice
15
we went over with them right before the independent practice. Then, students
minutes
will draw a Venn diagram where they compare foods they learned about in
Germany with foods in the US. This will show basic knowledge of Germany
and their background.
We will be giving the students a worksheet and Venn diagram to fill out after they have
learned about Germany and the table of contents.

Reflection on lesson: I think that the lesson went well. The students seemed really engaged with what is going on in the
Germany slideshow. They loved the part about how to say Hello in German. I love showing the students pictures from
around the world because I know that some of them have never been on a vacation, or anywhere other than their own
house in general. I think that is very important for students to at least see pictures. They were respectful and raised their
hands most of the time. The only problem that we had was when the students would get excited and start talking to each
other and we had to get their focus again on what was going on. Other than that, they did well on the table of contents
activity as well. Most of them understood the meaning of the table of contents and did the activity very well. Some of the
students are still getting used to talking and dont really like talking much.
