Experiential Learning Interview
Interview:
Its always fun to get to know a person with such different interests from your own. In
interviewing Landon Miguel Yez, I got to experience just that. Landon is a fellow freshman in
Nolas peer educator group, and interviewing him allowed me to see what sorts of fascinating
activities he likes to be involved in. During our interview, he expressed that his primary focus at
the University of Washington is his intended major in Spanish. In truth, his love for the language
and the culture is really at the forefront of his mind when deciding what hed like to do here,
especially for his experiential learning. He plans to earn an undergraduate degree in Spanish and
proceed from there to graduate school where he will further his education on the subject. His
ultimate goal is to become a Spanish Literature Professor. In order to achieve this goal, he knows
that he would like to take part in some research while at the UW as well possibly study abroad in
Spain during his spring quarter of 2018.
Experiential Learning:
Based on our discussion, I proceeded to do some research on what possible experiential
learning opportunities might be available to Landon that coincide with his expressed interests.
For the Research category of Experiential Learning, it is absolutely possible to take part
in Spanish research at the undergraduate level here at UW. In order to accomplish this, Landon
will need to be enthusiastic and an active participant in the program. There are numerous
professors he can make contact with within the department who may be interested in his
assistance with their own research, or who may be willing to advise him on his own research.
For the International Engagement category, there are multiple study abroad options open
to Landons desire to travel to Spain during Spring of 2018. The Northwest Cdiz Program
allows students to live and study in Cdiz, Spain for one semester (winter-spring) at the
University of Cdiz Faculty de Filosofa y Letras. Landon could also take part in the Spring
Quarter Program in Len, Spain. In this program, he would be able to live with a local family
and study the Spanish language at UWs Palacio Conde Luna Study Center.
Finally, a third way in which Landon could complete his Experiential Learning
requirements would be to engage in Service. Since he intends to be a Spanish Literature
professor, it might be useful to him to tale part in tutoring. As a member of the Latino Student
Union, he may have the opportunity to take part in such activities as tutoring and community
outreach.
Conclusion:
There are numerous opportunities available to Landon at the University of Washington that
coincide with his desire to study the Spanish language and literature. Many of these opportunities
will also easily qualify as Experiential Learning activities within the Honors curriculum. I hope
the preliminary research I have done on this subject will be of use to Landon as he continues his
journey here at UW and in the Honors Program.
