This is the certificate I received from Sumiyoshi High School after completing the 2 week
exchange program. Translation: This is a certificate. We are honored that you practice speaking
Japanese, Kansaiben in Sumiyoshi High School. We are also honored that you attracted many
people, especially Rikimaru teacher.
Event: California Japan Foreign Exchange Program

Role: Foreign exchange student
Experience: Selected from a group of people at my high school, I was one of 25-30 students who
were chosen to represent our school and the school district. Each of the students selected were
chosen carefully based on their skill level in the Japanese language, their grades, their
communication skills and their background in and out of school. For 2 weeks, my classmates and
I were sent to Japan to learn and experience the Japanese culture and high school life. As guests
in Japan I, along with the other students, had an obligation to not only represent our high schools
well but also show respect and appreciation to our hosts. To say that the 2 weeks taught me a lot
would be an understatement. Although 2 weeks did not seem like a whole lot of time, the time
spent there, the experiences I had and the knowledge/ appreciation of culture I gained were all
things that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Skills used: Japanese language skills, punctuality, and displayed knowledge and appreciation for
the culture.
