INTRODUCTION OF EARTHQUAKE

CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION OF EARTHQUAKE

1.1 General Aspects:
An Earthquake (also known as a quake or tremor) is a violent movement of the rocks in the
earths crust. Earthquakes are usually quite brief, but may repeat over long period of time.
They are the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earths crust. This creates seismic
waves, waves of energy that travel through the earth.
There are large earthquakes and small earthquakes. Big earthquakes can take down building
and cause death and injury. The study of earthquake is called seismology. Seismology studies
the frequency, type and size of earthquakes over a period of time.
When the earth moves offshore in the ocean, it can cause a tsunami. This can cause just as
much death and destruction as an earthquake. Landslides cam happen, too. This is an
important part of the earths rock cycle.
Earthquakes are measured using observations form seismometers. The magnitude of an
earthquake, and the intensity of shaking, is usually reported on the Richter Scale. On the
scale, 3 or less is scarcely noticeable, and magnitude 7 (or more) causes damage over a wide
area.

1.2 Earthquake:
Momentary shaking of ground or vibrations or oscillations of the ground caused by the slip or
by volcanic or magmatic activity or other sudden stress changes in the earth are called
Earthquakes.
There are 4 types of earthquake:
1) Tectonic Earthquake: The sudden release of strain energy by rupture of the rock at plate
boundary is the primary cause of seismic activity around the world. About 90% of all
earthquake results from tectonic events.
2) Volcanic Earthquake: Shallow volcanic earthquakes may result from sudden shifting or
movement of magma.
3) Plutonic Earthquake: This is caused by deep-seated changes.

4) Land Slide Earthquake: Massive landslides associated with the volcanic activity produce
significant ground motion.

1.3 Plate Tectonics:

The convective current of the mantle material causes the crust and some portion of the mantle
to slide on the hot molten outer core. This sliding of the earths mass takes place in portions
called Tectonic Plates.
The surface of the earth consists of 12 major tectonic plates, 20 smaller tectonic plates and
many filler plates. The major tectonic plates are the Indo Australian Plate, The Eurasian
Plate, The African Plate, The North American Plate, The South American Plate, The Pacific
Plate, The Antarctic Plate etc.
These plates move in different directions and at different speeds relative to the neighboring
plates at a rate of 5 to 10 cm per year on the plastic mantle. This movement is called plate
tectonics.
Sometimes, the plate in the front is slower, than, the plate comes behind it and collides and
mountains are formed. On the other hand, sometimes two plate moves away from one another
and rifts are formed. Sometimes two plates move side by side, along the same direction or in
opposite directions. These three type inter-plate interactions are called the Convergent,
Divergent and Transform Boundaries.

1.4.1 Body Waves:
Body waves travel through the interior of elastic media. These waves are of two types:
1.4.1.1 P-Waves:

They are also known as primary longitudinal waves.

P waves are similarly to the sound waves.

P waves can travel through all materials like solid, liquid and air. In P waves
the material particle oscillates pull and push in the direction of propagation of
the wave.

They are fastest of all EQ waves. The avg. velocity is 5.3 km/sec and
maximum velocity is 10.6 km/sec.

1.4.1.2 S-Waves:

S waves similarly to the electromagnetic waves.

S waves are slower than P waves.

They can travel through solids but not through liquids.

S waves are also called as transverse waves.

S waves cause maximum damage to structure by rocking the surface in both horizontal
and vertical direction.

Figure 1.6: S- waves

1.4.2 Surface Waves:

The waves travel on the surface of the earth is called surface waves. These waves are two
types:
1.4.2.2 Rayleigh Waves:
These waves are similarly to waves produced when rock is thrown in a pond.
These waves are produced by interaction of P waves and S waves with earth surface.
These waves are involved with both horizontal and vertical motion of the earth.

1.4.2.2 Love Waves:

They do not have vertical component of velocity.
These waves generally tend to create shearing or breaking ruptures.
L waves are faster than R waves but cannot pass through water.

1.5 Short Column Effect:

During past earthquakes, RC frame buildings that have columns of different heights within
one storey, suffered more damage in the shorter columns as compared to taller columns in the
same storey.
Poor behavior of short columns is due to the fact that in an earthquake, a tall column and a
short column of same cross-section move horizontally by same amount of displacement.
However, the short column is stiffer as compared to the tall column, and it attracts larger

earthquake force. Stiffness of a column means resistance to deformation-the larger is the

stiffness, larger is the force required to deform it. If short column is not adequately designed
for such a large force, it can suffer significantly damage during an earthquake. This behavior
is called Short Column Effect.

Figure 1.9: Building with short column effect

1.6 Seismic Method of Analysis:

Once the structural model has been selected, it is possible to perform analysis to determine
the seismically induced forces in the structures. There are different methods of analysis which
different degree of accuracy. The analysis processes can be classified as under:

1.6.1 Seismic Co-efficient Method: Seismic analysis of most structures is still carried out on
the basis of lateral force assumed equivalent to the actual loading. Although EQ force is
dynamic, the routine analysis is done by assuming it to be static. The base shear which is the
total horizontal force acting on the structure is calculated on the basis of structure is
calculated on the basis of structure mass, fundamental period of vibration and corresponding

1. INTRODUCTION OF EARTHQUAKE

mode shape. It is simplest method of analysis and requires less calculation. This method is
usually conservative for low to medium height buildings with a regular configuration.

1.6.2 Response Spectrum Method: This method is applicable for those structures where
modes other than the fundamental one affect significantly the response of the structure. This
method is based on the fact that, for certain forms of damping, which are reasonable models
for many buildings, the response in each natural mode of vibration can be computed
independently of the others, and the modal response can be combined to determine the total
response.

1.6.3 Elastic Time History Method: A linear time history analysis overcomes all the
disadvantages of a model response spectrum analysis, provide non linear behavior is not
involved. This method requires greater computational efforts for calculating the response at
discrete times. One interesting advantage of such a procedure is the relative signs of response
quantities are preserved in the response histories. This is important when iteration effects are
considered among stress resultants.
The seismic coefficient method is mainly suited for preliminary design of the buildings. The
preliminary design of the building is then used for response spectrum analysis or elastic time
history method.

1.7 Lateral Load Resisting System:

Earthquake causes shaking of ground in all three directions-along the horizontal directions (X
and Y) and vertical direction (Z). All structures are primarily designed to carry vertical loads.
However, horizontal shaking along X and Y directions remains a concern.
There are main four structural systems to resist lateral loads:
1.7.1 Load bearing wall system
1.7..2 Moment resisting frame system
1.7.3 Dual systems (Frame + Shear wall/bracings)
1.7.4 Tube systems

CED/CGPIT

1. INTRODUCTION OF EARTHQUAKE

1.7.1 Load Bearing Wall System:It is suitable for low-rise buildings. However, this system
is very weak in resisting lateral loads, and is seldom recommended for multi-storey building.
1.7.2 Moment Resisting Frame System:The framework of multi-storey building consists of
a number of beams and columns built monolithically, forming a framework. The system
comprising of RC columns and connecting beams is called a RC frame. The ability of multistorey building to resist the lateral forces depends on the rigidity of the joints between the
beams and the columns. When these joints are fully rigid, the structure as a whole is capable
of resisting the lateral loads. Such type of frame is called a Moment Resisting Frame, and, it
is the fundamental structural system for multi-storey buildings.
1.7.3 Dual Systems:However, if the strength and stiffness of a moment resisting frame are
not adequate, the frame may be strengthened by incorporating the following structural
components. Such type of system is known as Dual System.
-

Load bearing shear walls

Shear wall with columns

In filled shear walls

Bracings

Diaphragms

1.7.4 Tube Systems:For buildings taller than about 40 storey, the effect of lateral forces
becomes very intense. In such case, Tube Systems are more economical than the moment
resisting frames. The tube systems may be classified as,
-

Framed tube

Trussed tube

Tube-in-tube

2. Basics of STRUDS-2010

CHAPTER 2: BASICS OF STRUDS-2010

2.1 General:
STRUDS is an ideal software solution for the usage of structural engineers for the analysis of
2D & 3D structures and the design of different R.C.C. / Steel components such as Slabs,
Beams, Columns, Footings and Trusses with design sketches running on Windows
95/98/2000/XP/NT platforms.
STRUDS has an in-built graphical data generator to model the geometry of building
structure. The basic approach is to create two-dimensional floor plans (Plane Grids) and
provide column locations with the help of which the program automatically generates 2D
Plane Frames and 3D Space Frame. Appropriate material and section properties can be
created or assigned from STRUDS libraries. Standard boundary conditions and different
types of loads can then be applied.
At every step of the modelling process, you will receive graphical verification of your
progress. You never have to worry about making a mistake as the deleting or editing of any
part of the geometry is possible using available menu commands. Immediate visual feedback
provides an extra level of assurance that the model you have constructed agrees with your
intentions. When your structure geometry is complete, STRUDS performs analysis using
Stiffness Matrix Method and Finite Element Method for maximum solution, accuracy, speed
and reliability.
After the analysis, the Post Processor mode of STRUDS provides powerful visualization
tools that let you quickly interpret your analysis results and numerical tools to search, report
and understand the behaviour of the structure. Herein, the analysis results for different load
combinations for a part of structure or the whole geometry can be seen in the graphical as
well as the text form.
STRUDS then performs the integrated design by Limit State Method of all R.C.C.
components of the structure by directly reading the analysis results. All the relevant Indian
Standard codes & British standard codes are followed to confirm to the design parameters
and checks. If any component fails, the program gives you warning messages and suggests

you the possible alternatives for design. STRUDS prepares graphical outputs in the form of
drawings and diagrams. Design results in the text form of Schedules, Quantities and Details
are also produced. The design process is highly interactive and extremely user-friendly. You
can change the design parameters anywhere in between the design process and redesign the
structure. These changes are automatically reflected in graphical and numerical output form.
STRUDS also enables you to produce the working drawings in AUTOCAD.
Documentation is always an important part of analysis and design and the Windows user
interface enhances the results and simplifies the effort. STRUDS provides direct high quality
printing and plotting of both text and graphics data to document your model and results.

3. SHEAR WALLS

CHAPTER 3: SHEAR WALLS

Shear wall systems are one of the most commonly used lateral load resisting systems in highrise buildings. Shear walls have very high in plane stiffness and strength, which can be used
to simultaneously resist large horizontal loads and support gravity loads, making them quite
advantageous in many structural engineering applications. This section provides an
introduction to shear walls and how they resist earthquake and wind forces. This section also
shows how to properly construct the shear walls and the parts that make them up. With this
knowledge, contractors can build proper shear walls and inspectors can recognize the errors
untrained contractors make.

3.1 What is a Shear Wall?

Generally shear wall can be defined as structural vertical member that is able to resist
combination of shear, moment and axial load induced by lateral load and gravity load transfer
to the wall from other structural member. Reinforced concrete walls, which Design by
coinciding centroid and mass center of the building is the ideal for a Structure. An
introduction of shear wall represents a structurally efficient solution to stiffen a building
structural system because the main function of a shear wall is to increase the rigidity for
lateral load resistance.
In modern tall buildings, shear walls are commonly used as a vertical structural element for
resisting the lateral loads that may be induced by the effect of wind and earthquakes which
cause the failure of structure as shown in figure Shear walls of varying cross sections i.e.
rectangular shapes to more irregular cores such as channel, T, L, barbell shape, box etc. can
be used. Provision of walls helps to divide an enclose space, whereas of cores to contain and
convey services such as elevator. Wall openings are inevitably required for windows in
external walls and for doors or corridors in inner walls or in lift cores. The size and location
of openings may vary fro architectural and functional point of view.
The use of shear wall structure has gained popularity in high rise building structure,
especially in the construction of service apartment or office/ commercial tower. It has been
proven that this system provides efficient structural system for multi storey building in the
range of 30-35 storeys (MARSONO & SUBEDI, 2000). In the past 30 years of the record
service history of tall building containing shear wall element, none has collapsed during
strong winds and earthquakes (FINTEL, 1995).

3. SHEAR WALLS
3.1 RC Shear Wall:
Reinforced concrete (RC) buildings often have vertical plate-like RC walls called Shear
Walls in addition to slabs, beams and columns. These walls generally start at foundation level
and are continuous throughout the building height. Their thickness can be as low as 150mm,
or as high as 400mm in high rise buildings. The overwhelming success of buildings with
shear walls in resisting strong earthquakes is summarized in the quote, We cannot afford to
build concrete buildings meant to resist severe earthquakes without shear walls. as said by
Mark Fintel, a noted consulting engineer in USA.
RC shear walls provide large strength and stiffness to buildings in the direction of their
orientation, which significantly reduces lateral sway of the building and thereb reduces
damage to structure and its contents. Since shear walls carry large horizontal earthquake
forces, the overturning effects on them are large. Shear walls in buildings must be
symmetrically located in plan to reduce ill-effects of twist in buildings. They could be placed
symmetrically along one or both directions in plan. Shear walls are more effective when
located along exterior perimeter of the building such a layout increases resistance of the
building to twisting.

Fig.3.1: Typical Shear Wall

3.2 Where should Shear Walls be Located?

Shear walls should be located on each level of the structure including the crawl space. To
form an effective box structure, equal length shear walls should be placed symmetrically on
all four exterior walls of the building. Shear walls should be added to the building interior
when the exterior walls cannot provide sufficient strength and stiffness or when the allowable

14

3. SHEAR WALLS
span-width ratio for the floor or roof diaphragm is exceeded. For subfloors with conventional
diagonal sheathing, the span-width ratio is 3:1. This means that a 25-foot wide building with
this subfloor
will not require interior shear walls until its length exceeds 75 feet unless the strength or
stiffness of the exterior shear walls are inadequate.
Shear walls are most efficient when they align vertically and are supported on foundation
walls or footings. When shear walls do not align, other parts of the building will need
additional strengthening. Consider the common case of an interior wall supported by a
subfloor over a crawl space and there is no continuous footing beneath the wall. For this wall
to be used as shear wall, the subfloor and its connections will have to be strengthened near
the wall. For new construction, thicker plywood or extra nailing and connections can be
added. For retrofit work, existing floor construction is not easily changed. Thats the reason
why most retrofit work uses walls with continuous footings underneath them as shear walls.

Shear & Uplift

CED/CGPIT

15

3. SHEAR WALLS

3.3 What types of Forces Do Shear Walls Resist?

Shear walls resist two types of forces: shear forces and uplift forces. Connections to the
structure above transfer horizontal forces to the shear wall. This transfer creates shear forces
throughout the height of the wall between the top and bottom shear wall connections. The
strength of the lumber, sheathing and fasteners must resist these shear forces or the wall will
tear or shear apart. Uplift forces exist on shear walls because the horizontal forces are
applied to the top of the wall. These uplift forces try to lift up one end of the wall and push
the other end down. In some cases, the uplift force is large enough to tip the wall over. Uplift
forces are greater on tall short walls and less on low long walls.
Bearing walls have less uplift than non-bearing walls because gravity loads on shear walls
help them resist uplift. Shear walls need holdown devices at each end when the gravity loads
can not resist all of the uplift. The holdown device then provides the necessary uplift
resistance

3.4 What are the Functions of a Shear Wall?

Shear walls must provide the necessary lateral strength to resist horizontal earthquake forces.
When shear walls are strong enough, they will transfer these horizontal forces to the next
element in the load path below them. These other components in the load path may be other
shear walls, floors, foundation walls, slabs or footings.

Fig 3.4: Functions of Shear Wall

Shear walls also provide lateral stiffness to prevent the roof or floor above from excessive
side-sway. When shear walls are stiff enough, they will prevent floor and roof framing

16

3. SHEAR WALLS
members from moving off their supports. Also, buildings that are sufficiently stiff will
usually suffer less nonstructural damage.

3.5 How Shear Walls Provide Strength?

The strength of the shear wall depends on the combined strengths of its three components:
lumber, sheathing and fasteners. Later in this section you will learn how each component
effects the strength and how strength is lost by improper installations. When all of the
components are properly in place, the shear wall can provide its intended strength.
For shear wall sheathing, the 1994 Uniform Building Code (UBC) permits the use of gypsum
wallboard, cement plaster, fiberboard, wood particleboard, plywood and oriented strand
board. Previous editions of the UBC also allowed wood lath and plaster, horizontal and
diagonal sheathing for shear walls. All of these sheathing materials provide different
strengths. The UBC shows these strengths in pounds per foot of wall length.
Fasteners for shear wall construction may be staples, screws or nails. Denser lumber species
provide stronger fastener strengths. Values for shear wall strengths assume a dense lumber
species like douglas fir-larch or southern pine. Thicker framing members also increase wood
structural panel sheathing strengths.

3.6 How Shear Walls Provide Stiffness?

The stiffness of the shear wall, just like its strength, depends on the combined stiffness of its
three components: lumber, sheathing and fasteners. The size and grade of end stud(s),
thickness and grade of sheathing, and the sheathing fastener diameter determine how flexible
a wood shear wall will be. When present, holdown devices also contribute to the overall
stiffness of the shear wall. If holdown devices stretch or slip, the top of the shear wall will
move horizontally. This horizontal movement adds to the movement allowed by the lumber,
sheathing and fasteners. Any additional movement from the holdown will reduce the
effective stiffness of the shear wall.

5. SOFTWARE DESIGN STEPS

CHAPTER 5: SOFTWARE DESIGN STEPS

In STRUDS, user can create following structure geometry:

Plane Frame: the user can draw the Plane Frame graphically by defining beams and
columns. The starting point should be origin (0,0) for Column.

Plane Grid (Floor Plan): the user can draw the floor plan graphically by defining slab
panels, beams and column positions.

Plane Truss: In case of Plane Truss, a standard library of various types such as Fink,
Pratt, Howe is available and the user can select the type of truss he wants or can draw his
own truss geometry.

Space Frame: the user has to draw the floor plans at different levels in the building and
locate column positions. STRUDS automatically creates the 3D space frame from the
data of floor plans and column location /properties.

5.1 How does STRUDS generate Earthquake Loads?

STRUDS generates EQ loads as per IS: 1893-1984 as per the following procedure.
STRUDS displays various parameters required for earthquake load calculation which are

to be provided by the user. User can specify the Seicmic parameters and Response
spectrum parameters. User can select any of the method, to apply earthquake load by

Preprocessor -> Load -> Generate EQ Load

STRUDS then computes the live load and dead load of every floor in the building. Then it
calculates the base shear along both X and Y directions from the values provided by the
user and design load.

5.2 How does STRUDS generate Wind Loads?

STRUDS automatically generates wind load on the building structure as per IS:875 from
the parameters specified by the user. User has to provide the values for following
parameters:
-

K1 - Probability Factor

K2 - Terrain, Height & Structure Size factor

-

K3 - Topography factor

Vb - Basic Wind Speed in m/s

Cpi - Internal Pressure coefficient

H - Total Height of the structure

I - Greater Horizontal Dimension of the structure

W - Lesser Horizontal Direction

Cpe - External Pressure coefficient

The values of H, I and W are taken by STRUDS automatically from the structure
geometry created by user. The values of other parameters like Vb, Cpi and Cpe are to be
specified by user. To provide the values for K2, values from tables in IS:875 are made
available by STRUDS which the user can select as per his requirement.
5.3 How does STRUDS analyze a structure?

STRUDS can perform the analysis of discrete structures such as Plane Frame, Plane
Grid, Plane Truss and Space Frame. Advanced Stiffness Matrix method with frontal
technique is adopted for analysis. User can idealize a building structure in the form of
Plane Frames, Plane Grids (Floor Plans) or a 3-D Space Frame.

5.4 How does STRUDS calculate column loads?

In STRUDS, the column loads are computed as algebraic sum of beam reactions at their
nodes. In case of Plane Grid analysis, only axial loads are computed on the columns
which is the sum of beam reactions at that node.

In case of Plane Frame and Space Frame analysis, the axial load as well as the moments
along both X and Y axes are computed.

5.5 How does STRUDS perform Seismic Analysis?

STRUDS analyses the generated plane frames and space frame for user defined load
cases. When earthquake load is generated, user needs to specify that the structure should
be analyzed for the horizontal earthquake load in positive and negative directions along
both X and Y axes. By default, a structure is analyzed for Dead Load and Live Load,
which are in most cases acting vertically on the structure. The structure is then analyzed
for all defined load cases, the results of which can be combined by defining any load
combinations for design. Default load combinations are predefined. User also, can
specify his own load combination.

5.6 What are the analysis results generated by STRUDS?

After analysis, STRUDS generates Member forces (Shear Force, Bending Moment,
Axial Force and Torsion) and Nodal (Support Reactions and Nodal Deflections) results

for the structure. In Post processor, user can view these results both graphically and in
report form.
5.7 For which load combinations beams are designed in STRUDS?

The main menu of Design module of STRUDS has the submenus to design the
components of structure such as Slab, Beam, Column and Footing. The design load
combinations can be controlled by using the `Load Combination' menu from this menu
bar. The default load combination in RCC Design is 1.5 DL + 1.5 LL.

STRUDS analyses all the beams for all the defined load cases separately. However, the
analysis results of these load cases are superimposed for a load combinations, to design
for the worst condition, if the user chooses `Worst Load Combination' for design.

Beam Design -> Select Grid -> Design Results -> DsgLoadComb...

This option allows you to select the load combination to redesign the selected grid. You
may have selected say Worst Load Combination for all the beams while setting initial
parameters, but now you may want to see the design results of a particular beam for
some other load combination, say for 1.5DL+1.5LL. in such case, you can select the load
combination and STRUDS will redesign the beam for the selected load combination.

5.8 For which load combinations columns are designed in STRUDS?

The main menu of Design module of STRUDS has the submenus to design the
components of structure such as Slab, Beam, Column and Footing. The design load
combinations can be controlled by using the `Load Combination' menu from this menu
bar. The default load combination in RCC Design is 1.5 DL + 1.5 LL.

STRUDS designs all the columns for all the defined load combinations separately.
However the analysis results of all load combinations are superimposed for a load
combinations, to design for the worst condition, if the user chooses `Worst Load
Combination' for design.

Column Design -> View Design -> View Next

Select on this button, to see the design results of the column for other load combinations.

5.9 What checks are carried out by STRUDS for footing design?

Following checks are carried out for individual & combine footing:

-

Check for SBC

Check for one-way shear

Check for two-way shear i.e. Punching shear check

Check for minimum steel

Check for Bearing

Check for Sliding

As Raft footing is designed as slab-beam grid so all the checks of slab and beam design
are performed.

5.10

How can the user modify the outputs given by STRUDS?

The outputs generated by STRUDS are either text reports or graphical reports in the
form of drawings.

The text reports in STRUDS are automatically saved as text files having TXT extension
or filename.?sh ( e.g For Beam Schedule it will be filename.bsh) extension, whenever
user opts for the `Write to File' or `Print to File' options. This text files can be opened
by the user in Notepad or Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel. It would be better if
these files are opened in Excel as the reports are tabular and generated to be compatible
with Excel format. User can then modify these reports as per his requirement.

The graphical outputs generated by STRUDS can be exported to AutoCAD by using

advance ARX interface. The DRAFTING module of STRUDS serves this purpose.
User can choose the drawings such as plan, slab reinforcement, beam cross sections,
footing cross sections or foundation plan and prepare a template file. This template file
can then be opened in AutoCAD and saved as DWG file. User can then modify these
drawings to suit his requirements.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

CONCLUDING REMARKS:

From the present term work, it is concluded that, the software STRUDS-2010 is
very much use friendly and easy to operate. It is an ideal software solution for the
usage of structural engineers for the analysis of 2D & 3D structures and the design
of different R.C.C. / Steel components such as Slabs, Beams, Columns, Footings
and Trusses with design sketches running on Windows 95/98/2000/XP/NT
platforms.

Also, STRUDS software can design various slabs such as, rectangular, triangular,
trapezoidal and flat slab. It can design rectangular, T and L shaped columns and
beams and curved in plan beams. It can design shear walls and foundations like,
Flat, Sloping, Combined and Strip footings, Under reamed and End Bearing piles,
Beam supported raft footing.

From the Architectural Plan of High- Rise Building (Aditya Palace), a geometry of
building(G+10) is created in STRUDS. After, the completition of geometry, an
analysis of the structure is done by considering earthquake load wind load, live
load and self weight by using STRUDS software. Also, a design of shear wall is
carried out in the present work. Form this, deflection, bending moment, shear force
and axial force diagram are obtained for perticular section. And, a full HTML
reports of beam, column, footing, shear wall with their scheduling is generated.
