The 2nd amendment still has relevance in todays society, by the means of self preservation, for
the protection of the U.S. by both foreign and domestic threats, and for any other lawful
purposes. These are the reasons for the founders to add the 2nd amendment to the Bill of Rights
and to make sure that this inalienable right cannot be taken away and leave them to their
demise as free people.
The first aspect that well cover is the right to self- preservation as a reason for the 2nd
amendment still being necessary today. Even back in the 17th and 18th century they needed a
means to protect themselves from thieves, murderers, and wild animals. The way they achieved
this is by having firearms whether that be a musket, pistol, swords and even canons. Some of
you might wonder why im adding swords/knives to the 2nd amendment and the reason is that
arms is anything that can be used in a fight and that includes melee weapons as well. They also
considered canons as arms according to ( Halbrook 44), which in today's perspective is
equivalent to a howitzer. The reason why they armed themselves was for self protection which
as John Adams once put it is a fundamental human nature( Halbrook 25) and is common
sense to arm yourself for your own protection from harm. This by itself is a great enough reason
to have the 2nd amendment and on what basis would you deny someone the right to protect
themselves from harm. `The founders intended all weapons to be to be owned by the population
in terms of small arms such as rifles, pistols, and machine guns all the way to artillery pieces
and thats how it should be today.
The next reason the 2nd amendment is still relevant today is the protection of the state to fight
threats both foreign and domestic. Heres yet another reason that has no reasonable dispute the
need for. This allowed the people to defend their lives, their community and their country from
threats out to either destroy or harm them. It allowed them to help in the defence of the nation
and allowed them to be better trained and skilled than someone who wasnt able to own a
firearm before and thus made the people more enabled defenders. It was also for the protection
from a tyrannical government ( Brooks ), that would abuse its power and take away the rights
of the citizenry. If, God forbid, the country gets invaded wouldnt you want there to be tens of
millions of people with firearm experience to help in the defence of the nation and not have the
country be completely defenseless against foreign invaders. According to ( The Daily Take
Team) they see the terming of the founders saying: protecting from threats foreign and domestic
as the people defending the government when in reality its also the protection of the people
from a tyrannical government and refuse to see that the government was and still is put in check
by this. A common argument to the relevance of this today is; oh the government won't be
tyrannical now or even if it was they have missiles and an armed populous cant defeat that
( The Daily Take Team). In reality they wouldnt use these weapons on the people unless they
want an all out war on the entire populace because they would cause to much damage and
harm to the country economically and publically and would stick to using boots on the ground
approach and an armed populace can defeat them on this front.
