The title of this event was called the poetry slam. The poetry slam was an event where 14
poets competed in a competition for a prize. It was 14 poets and three 30 second rounds for each
poet. The purpose of this event was to support our fellow students and engage in social setting in
the auditorium of GCB. The purpose of this event was to successfully engage in behaviors for
habit 2: Begin with the end in mind.
I entered this social gathering with my friends and we seated ourselves in the top row of
the auditorium. The DJ started to play popular music of this generation and students around me
started to get excited. In my opinion the DJ set the mood for this social event and I knew I would
have a great experience. The host then came to the microphone and told students participating to
come to the front. At that time he explained the rules and guidelines of the poetry slam. At that
time the poets started there 30 second round and so on and so forth. This continued for three
rounds and the students went into depth and had a variety of poems. These different poems
caught my attention because they talked about problems going on today.
I enjoyed the poems that talked about the issues and conflicts of today. I surprised at how
these students were in tuned with the issues of today and incorporated it into a strong piece.
These poems were not like most of the songs of today and have absolutely no meaning. I
understood every powerful piece spoken in short period of time. It surprised me that they could
go that much in depth in such a short period of time. The only thing that I did not enjoy was the
lack of organization. The only reason I say this is because some poets did not understand the
rules and guidelines of the competition. The host kept explaining and reminding students of the
rules throughout the competition. Other than that I had a great time and this program was
amazing and I would go again for my enjoyment.

The two concepts I took away from this event was black empowerment and the
importance of setting meaningful and realistic goals. It honestly gave the crowd a feeling of unity
for this social event. This event impacted my experience in a positive way; it helped becomes
more in tuned with the school. It also helped be more aware to certain issues occurring in the
world today. This helped realize that people who graduate from this school is going to make a
difference in this world, and Im grateful to be a part of this college.
