RU Teacher Education Lesson Plan Format

Candidate Name:
Anna Jones
Date:
9/26/16
Grade Level: K
Lesson Title/Topic: Literacy - Small Groups Rhyming (idea adapted from
http://www.playdoughtoplato.com/rhyming-picture-mats/)
Standards:

Oral Language K.3 The student will build oral communication skills.
g) Follow one- and two-step directions.
Oral Language K.4 The student will identify, say, segment, and blend
various units of speech sounds.
b) Identify and produce words that rhyme.

Specific Observable Objective(s):

I can follow directions.
I can make words that rhyme.
I can find words that rhyme.
Essential Vocabulary:
Rhyme - words that have the same ending sound.
Assessment:
I will assess the students by observation as they are doing the rhyming
activity and saying the rhyming words. I will be doing the activity in small groups
and each student will have a rhyming mat, therefore I will be able to observe each
student by assessing what pictures they place down.
Student Considerations:
For students who may not understand the concept of rhyming, I will explain
rhyming words prior to the activity and give multiple examples. Prior to the lesson,
as a group we will look at the pictures, and I will say each picture so they can hear
the rhyming words aloud. I will also limit the amount of pictures I will give them to
choose from. For groups who have a harder time understanding the concept, I will
first only set out one or two rhyming mats or place them in the pocket chart and do
it with them as a group, instead of giving them each one.
Instructional Resources, Materials, and Technology:
Rhyming mats from - http://www.playdoughtoplato.com/rhyming-picturemats/
Scissors - the pictures will be precut to save time.
PROCEDURES: Include a detailed list of steps for teaching the lesson based on
direct or indirect teaching choices, questions that will be asked by the teacher, a
description of how you will set-up the Learning Environment, and a description of
appropriate roles of all Personnel in the Classroom.
The Beginning (a.k.a. Anticipatory Set): (2 minutes)

I will first ask the students if they can list a few words that rhyme. If they list
a few correct words that rhyme together as a group, I will go into explaining
the rhyming mats and discuss the directions:
o Can we think of some words that rhyme with bat?
o What does it mean when two words rhyme? - they have the same
ending sounds.
If the students do not understand the concept of rhyming, I will spend more
time explaining the concept and give them multiple examples and give them
no more than six pictures and two rhyming mats.

The Middle: (Specify time)

To maintain the students interests, I will be sure to go over all of the pictures
with them and have extra pictures for groups who think the activity is too
easy and start to lose interest (and vice versa.)
For this lesson, my role with consist of being the facilitator and an observer. I
will start the activity, then observe from then on, and step in if they need
assistance.
The pictures will be discussed before each of them have them in front of
them, therefore they will have an idea of what the picture is and they won't
confuse it with something similar.
I will ask questions before and after the lesson, such as, What rhymes with
_____? And Why? As the lesson is going on I will step back and observe to
see if they understand and assess them informally. I will step when I notice
they are not understanding, and ask questions such as What does this
picture look like? A frog? What rhymes with frog out of these two pictures?
The End (a.k.a. Closing): (Specify time)
To summarize my lesson, I will have the students point to each of the pictures
on their rhyming mat (with a pointer) and say them aloud. I will assess them
as they read the pictures off of their mat. I will then ask them to clean off
their mats for the next group.
