IV B.TECH II SEMSUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATIONS MAY - 2010
ADVANCED FOUNDATION ENGINEERING
(CIVIL ENGINEERING)
Time: 3hours
Max.Marks:80
Answer any FIVE questions
All questions carry equal marks
--Explain the Meyerhofs bearing capacity theory in detail?
Explain how the bearing capacity of a shallow foundation is estimated when it is
subjected to eccentric loads and inclined loads.
[8+8]

2.a)

What are the factors effecting tolerable limits for settlements? What are the
tolerable limits for different types of structures?
A square footing 1.2m 1.2m rests at a depth of 1m in a saturated clay layer 4m
deep. The clay is normally consolidated, having an unconfined compressive
strength of 40 kN/m2. The soil has a liquid limit of 30%, sat = 17.8 kN/m3,
w=28% and G = 2.68. Determine the load which the footing can carry safely with
a factor of safety of 3 against shear. Also determine the settlement if the footing
is loaded with this safe load.

How to estimate the settlement of pile groups in sandy soils?

Discuss in detail the settlement pile groups in cohesive soils.

4.a)

What do you understand by negative skin friction in pile foundation? Explain the
situation which causes negative skin friction and explain how do you account for
it in pile design.
A single under-reamed pile is installed in a deep deposit of stiff fissured clay.
The diameter of the stem is 1.0 m and that of under-ream is 2.5m. The length of
the pile is 16m. The unconfined compressive strength of clay is 140kN/m3.
Estimate the allowable load carrying capacity of the pile for a factor of safety of
3.0.
