Medical Facility
Finally
Gets Started
By Katie McFadden

Demolition crews arrived

this week to make way for the
future medical arts complex at
the old Keyfood site on Beach
105th Street. After about a year
of delays, the project is underway and the future of Rockaways healthcare looks promising.
As with any project that
is subject to approval in
New York City, red tape
has held back the start of a
much-needed medical facility, but the project, initiated
by ophthalmologist Dr. Mark
Gelwan, has officially begun.
Weve had our challenges
and problems dealing with
the city of New York, Dr. Gel-

wan said. This was extremely complicated to navigate

through all the regulatory requirements of New York City
because the project is directly adjacent to an MTA structure, so we had to get MTA
approval, environmental approvals and Department of
Buildings approvals. The city
doesnt make it easy to build
a project, Bill Colgan, Managing Partner for Community Healthcare Associates,
the developer of the project,
said. However as of Tuesday,
November 22, demolition is
underway, construction is
expected to start immediately following and the project
is expected to be complete
around this time next year.

The Holy Grail Is Looking For Him

Quick question: who is the

most interesting man in the
world? God knows its not
me. Though recent polls had
me in the Top 200. But dont
believe the polls! Anyway, Im
not asking you to think about
it. I certainly dont want you
to come up with a list. I just
want you to tell me youve
seen the commercials.
You know, the bearded, sophisticated guy whod look
into the camera and say, I
dont always drink beer but
when I do, I prefer Dos Equis.
Please tell me youve seen
one of the commercials from
the ad campaign that ran for
NINE years with the same
character. There were film
clips of the guy bull fighting or catching a killer wave.
A voiceover would marvel

about his ability to parallel

park a train.
The Most Interesting Man
would sign off saying: Stay
thirsty, my friends.
Other lines were just as
memorable.
The narrator
would intone He lives vicariously, through himself.
He once had an awkward
moment, just to see how it
feels.
He has won the lifetime
achievement award, twice.
Cuba imports cigars from
him. Mosquitos refuse to bite
him purely out of respect. In
museums, he is allowed to
touch the art.
Just recently, the actor that
played the Most Interesting
started getting long in the
tooth so theyve replaced him
with a younger and I guess,
more interesting, guy. And
the switch made the news. At
least the news I read.
The reason I want to know
if you know about the Most
Interesting man is because
until a couple of weeks ago I

thought he was not only interesting but universally known.

But as usual, I was mistaken.
Three women I know (you
know who you are!) never
heard of him, the commercials or the millions of Internet memes (riffs) that were
generated. I dont always
know when someone is attracted to mebut when I do,
its two years later.
So I start thinking it must
be a gender thing. I mean I
cant name a single Housewife from Jersey or Orange
County. But no, plenty of
women know the Dos Equis
guy. Now I have to decide if
these three women are clueless or lead way more interesting lives than me and the
guy on the commercial.
In the good old days there
were only seven channels
and Channel 13 barely counted. Everybody saw the same
shows and knew the commercials (Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh
what a relief it is). A couple of
gossip columns would clue

you in on who you were supposed to know.

But now, forget it. People mention a musician or band and most
of the time I have to form my fake,
yeah, I like them, too face.
Still, how could they not
know the Most Interesting
Man in the World?! Hes the
guy whose only regret is not
knowing what regret feels
like. I think theyre pulling
my leg. I just keep dropping
quotes on them hoping it will
ring a bell.
When a tree falls in a forest
and no one is there, he hears
itSharks have a week dedicated to him.Presidents
take his birthday off.
Cmon you know it! They
shake their head at me. No. His
feet dont get blisters, but his
shoes do. He can speak Russianin French.
Now theyre looking at me like
thats dumb, not interesting. I
make one last plea. He once
made a weeping willow laugh.
Nope, they say, never heard
of him.

Grey Skies Over Rockaway

By Katie McFadden

Freddy was an all-star

of a guy. He was the type
of person where life always
handed him lemons, but he
always turned it around and
made a chocolate cake out
of it, Christopher Kalisak,
a close-friend, cousin and
fellow member of the Broad
Channel Volunteer Fire Department said of the late
Fred W. Grey. Grey died unexpectedly on Saturday, November 19. He was 44.
Some may have known
Grey as the raspy voice on
the other line when calling
a Rocapulco Car Service.
Some may have played softball with him for the Jamaica
Bay Softball League. Others
may have known him as a 4th
Degree Knight at the Knights
of Columbus. Many knew
him from his longtime volunteer service at the BCVFD
and then the West Hamilton
Volunteer Fire Department

remember him from occasionally serving drinks behind the bar at the old Bridge
or more recently, filling in
at Brendans Bar. On Saturday night, an empty seat at

Brendans was left reserved

for a friend who will truly be
missed. Across the bridge in
Broad Channel, the BCVFD
shifted the focus of their annual Turkey Karaoke fundraiser at Grassy Point Pub to
raise money to cover funeral
costs and support the future
of Greys 10-year-old daughter, Isabelle. The place was
packed as tears were shed
between smiles and laughs
as those he impacted remembered him.
No matter what was gong
on, he had a smile on his
face and hed always give
everybody a good laugh,
close friend Michael McGee
said. He was a great guy all
around. If he had to give,
hed give it to you. Half the
time if he didnt have to give,
hed give it to you. Kalisak
added, he was the type of
person that one day you
loved and the next day you
wanted to choke him, but
when it came down to it, he

would do anything for you.

Greys desire to give back
to others was clear through
his many years of service
with volunteer fire departments. According to Chief
Dan McIntyre, he joined
the BCVFD around 2000.
Grey, Badge #417, was a former lieutenant at the Broad
Channel firehouse. He was
one of four members who responded to the World Trade
Center on September 11,
2001 aboard Ambulance 303
and was injured when one
of the buildings collapsed.
Those who knew him said
he never recovered physically and mentally from the
effects of that day. His injuries after 9/11 were more
than physical. He had PTSD.
Ever since then, he was never the same, Kalisak, who
was with him that day, said.
Yet he continued to dedicate his time to the fire-

MEDICAL FACILITY

Continued from Page 3

The 60,000 square foot elevated building will be four

stories high and will have
three floors, two of which
will be reserved for a surgery
center that will offer a wide
variety of specialty surgeries.
The complex is expected to
attract patients from on and
off the peninsula, so there will
be sufficient parking. It will
have plenty of parking with
120 spots, half of them under
the building and the rest adjacent to it. It will also have a
food court to accommodate
patients, families and staff.
Although the project is
spearheaded by Dr. Gelwan,
it will have several partners
including 10 private doctors
and there will be opportunity for other groups to come in
and rent space in the facility
if they offer a specialty service that is not covered. Dr.
Gelwan said that he expects
that a major hospital will be
involved as well.
The facility will have an
on-site lab, imaging center,
primary care and specialty
services like ophthalmology,
gynecology, orthopedics, oncology, urology, pain management, physical therapy,
general surgery and more.
Dr. Gelwan says that some
doctors that were formerly
on the peninsula and have
since relocated to places like
the Five Towns after Hurricane Sandy, will once again
find a home within this new
facility. This is going to be
like a healthcare mall and it

The Rockaway Times

will be quality care. Its like
a one-stop shopping deal.
Someone may come here for
diabetes treatment but can
also get cataract surgery or
vascular surgery and can see
all these specialists here that
can do the procedures for
them, plus prep-work and
lab testing. There will be a
lot of people getting a lot
more and better care without
having to stay in a hospital,
Dr. Gelwan said, adding that
they aim to accept all insurances on the peninsula.
Colgan says the facility will
not only add more healthcare
options, but will create jobs.
The benefit to the community is two-fold. It will bring
quality healthcare, which
is needed in the community, and it will create good
quality, high-paying jobs,
he said. Dr. Gelwan expects
the facility to create 125 fulltime positions. My goal for
the facility is to make sure 90
to 100 percent of jobs go to
people from the community, Dr. Gelwan said.
How will the development of this facility impact
the peninsulas only hospital, St. Johns Episcopal
Hospital? Youre still going to need St. Johns, but
you may need a different
St. Johns. This facility will
give patients the ability to
get care and go home and
that will eliminate unnecessary admissions. St. Johns
will need to focus more on
emergency services and cut
down on beds and overhead
to be successful, Dr. Gelwan said.

Temple Beth-El of Rockaway

Park and the First Congregational Church in Rockaway
Beach are joining together this
year for an interfaith service
on Thanksgiving Day. Starting
at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 24, all are invited for
a celebration of the holiday at
Temple Beth-El at 201 Beach
121st Street.
Participating will be Temple
Congregation President Allan
Goldberg, Temple Committee
Chairpersons Esther and Al
Rosenthal, Cantor Jeffrey Wolk,
Rockaway Rotary Club President John Napolitano, and Reverend Joseph Mendlin.

Services will be followed by a

collation or light holiday meal
in the temple ballroom afterward.
A spokesperson noted, For
the past 88 years, Temple BethEl of Rockaway Park and the
First Congregational Church
have been taking part in a joint
interfaith Thanksgiving morning service. It was continued
when the late Rabbi Blaine took
the pulpit in our Temple and is
now being continued by the officers of our synagogue and the
Church. This year it will be held
at Temple Beth-El.
In the true spirit of the season, they are welcoming those
of all faiths and walks of life to
come together and give thanks.

Presidential politics sure gets

everyone heated and the timing
sometimes isnt that great as families join together just a couple
of weeks later for Thanksgiving.
Heres advice that wont be heeded but were offering it anyway
because tis the season.
No ones mind is going to be
changed about the election so
theres no point in rehashing
as turkey is served. Of course, if
youre surrounded by a family
with unanimous sentiments, rehash away!
But it would be a shame if politics obscures the many things we
have to be thankful for.
Voting in New York in Presidential elections is not all that much
different than rooting for a major sports team. You might like

the Yankees or the Mets. In fact,

you might be extraordinarily passionate in your devotion but your
deep feelings wont change how
Joe Girardi will manage the Yankees. You can scream at the top of
your lungs about how hes using
the pitching staff but hes unlikely
to hear you.
Sports fans can harbor deep
lets not say hatred enmity towards another team in town. A
Yankees fan might never, ever appreciate why someone would follow the Mets. And vice versa. It
can drive them nuts.
Were fairly certain that no fan
has changed team allegiance because the other fan screamed that
their team was superior.
Sometimes sports fans feel
physically ill after their team suf-

fers a loss. Emotionally, they

have that much invested. They
might even take out their feelings
on family. Others might say thats
going a little overboard.
Plenty of passionate fans have
best friends and family who for
some crazy reason like the other team. But ultimately (and
hopefully) they realize that their
friendship and love is built on
more than feelings for a sports
team.
And here's the thing, Joe Girardi
might not hear you shouting from
the stands, but if you were play-

Page 11
ing for the Yankees hed be more
likely to listen. Thats an analogy
to what goes on with politics. If
youre involved in the game talk
to people in the game. Rally, call,
vote.
Otherwise, youre just a fan
yelling at another fan that your
team is better.
Every now and then a sports
fan shifts allegiance. But its never because someone shouted at
them.
Heres to a warm, wonderful
Thanksgiving. We hope you feel
thankful.

Inadvertently
Washington
Well, when I asked my son
if he had ever biked through
Brooklyn, he said no, but he
was up for an adventure. The
problem for me was how to
get to Brooklyn from Manhattan with a bike. My son is in
Clinton Hill, a now gentrified
neighborhood that is about
two miles from Greenpoint
and Williamsburg, my old

stomping ground.
I was thrilled to find out
that NY Waterways makes
several stops on the East River
from 34th Street and they take
bikes. So I set out one sunny Saturday to ride my way to
Clinton Hill. But first I had to
ride from uptown on the East
Side to 34th Street. Biking in
Manhattan is not for the faint

of heart. Despite Citi-Bikes almost on every corner and multiple bike lanes, it is still dangerous business, and obeying
traffic laws is a must to stay
alive. But once I got to the ferry
it was clear sailing with stops
at Long Island City, Greenpoint and two stops in Williamsburg. I got off at the second one, South Williamsburg
and jumped onto Kent Avenue
which winds its way around
the Brooklyn Navy Yard, part
of the NYC bike path initiative. Not too far into the ride
I came across an open field,
across from the BQE. There is
a boardwalk that winds its way
in semi-circles and a plaque
that reads Navy Cemetery. A
nice fellow came out to greet
me and told me that this was
part of the bike initiative and
was set up to honor the Navy
troops that were buried on the
site dating back to the 1830s.
Many graves were moved, but
more than 2,000 remained. It
was a moving experience.
I continued to ride along the
BQE to Clinton Avenue then
went south and picked up
my son. Clinton Avenue, the
main road in Clinton Hill, was
named after the former governor of New York State. From
Clinton we made our way to
Vanderbilt Avenue, which
we rode uphill for about two
miles, past Atlantic Avenue,
the Barclay Center, the new
housing complexes and past
St. James Cathedral right up to
Brooklyns Grand Army Plaza
and into Prospect Park.
My son had never been to
Prospect Park and remarked
how similar it was to Central
Park. No surprise there since it
was designed by the same two
guys, Olmsted and Vaux, who
did Central Park. At the north
end of the park we exited onto
Prospect Park West and headed toward Greenwood Cemetery. There we were greeted by
a very nice guard and hundreds
of chirping parrots. Yes, parrots; the front gothic entrance
is home to green parrots who
have made an unbelievable
set of nests in the turrets. We
walked to the top of the hill in
Greenwood, which is known as
Battle Hill, because it is where
one of the bloodiest battles
of the Revolutionary War was

The Rockaway Times

fought. Yes, thats right, right
in Brooklyn! It seems that General Washington, fresh from
his victory at Bostons Bunker
Hill, made his way to Brooklyn to protect the city from the
British. The British, though,
had outflanked Washington
and they had a royal battle on
what is the highest point in
Brooklyn. That hill is known as
a terminal moraine; the result
of glaciers millennia ago that
pushed land up from what is
now the East River. All of this
was news to my son by the way.
As we made our way back
down from Greenwood Cemetery we headed back toward
Prospect Park past Atlantic
Avenue and we parted ways. I
then headed toward the East
River where I made my way
back across the river. The next
day I biked over to Central Park
and was amazed at the North
Woods section of the park toward Harlem Heights. I had
never been there and found a
ravine and a waterfall I never
knew was there.
What has all this got to do with
the title of this column? Well as
it turns out I had inadvertently
retraced Washingtons retreat
from the British in 1776. From
the fight at Battle Hill back
through Prospect Park, Washingtons troops fought and fled
the British back to Brooklyn
Heights where Washington got
all of his troops across the East
River to Manhattan safely, only
to do battle with the British
again in Harlem Heights. Although he lost at every step,
he escaped to fight another
day and win the war. Pretty
amazing stuff, right here in
Brooklyn and New York!
There are monuments to
these battles in Greenwood,
Prospect Park, and in Fort
Greene. Oh, and by the way,
if you are ever at Pier One Imports on 66th Street and 3rd
Avenue there is a plaque there
too. Can you guess? During that same time, Nathan
Hale, a 21-year old patriot
was caught and hung on that
spot as a spy for Washington,
and his only regret? That he
had but one life to give for his
country. All those years ago,
and it secured us the right to
vote for President. God bless
America.

The Idea Guys

Mirror, Mirror On The Finger
By RT Pepperwinkle

A few columns ago I suggested you could get rich

with baby bottles shaped
like trombones or other musical instruments. If the idea
of baby Louie Armstrongs
isn't your melody, how about
cashing in on the vanity of
teenage girls?
Not that there's anything
wrong with vanity and teenage girls.
In fact, there's a lot right
with it if you get this idea on
Snapchat or whatever social
media thing (which started out
as an idea) is hot at the moment. Girls have been known
to check a mirror now and then
and girls have been known to
use fingernail polish. Well,
why not combine the two? Yes,
fingernail polish that reflects
like a mirror. Or fake nails that
serve the same purpose.

This idea was originally floated by a teenage girl

from South Carolina. We met
her and her parents on the
Staten Island ferry and got
to talking about ideas. She
said you dont need an app
for your phone or a hand
held mirror, all you need is
finger nails that reflect. She
said something about getting her science teacher to
help make the formula and
we suggested why not just
make fake fingernails made
of a reflective coating.
We did a cursory Google
search and havent found this
idea out there yet. With all
the nail salons in Rockaway,
youd think one would offer
finger mirrors!

when appropriate students
and professors, including myself, discussed the outcome.
As a teacher in the Fine Art
Department, the majority of
my students are liberal, but
nonetheless, one of the major conversations we have had
is cultivating understanding
across the aisle and across
the country. My students and
myself have endeavored to understand what appealed to voters when they cast their ballot
for Trump. We have sought to

Page 15
move outside our own bubbles
and see more clearly the issues affecting those who found
Trumps message appealing.
I encourage Peter Mahon
to move outside his own bubble. Given that 1.4 million
more people voted for Hillary
Clinton than Donald Trump,
there is clearly a large population that is receiving this election news differently and have
valid concerns that Mahon
dismisses through his focus
on responses he describes as
absurdity." Concerns about
economic outcomes, climate
change, hate crimes, womens
rights, and freedom of speech
and the press are not absurd,
just as the concerns of Trump
voters regarding immigration,
jobs, trade, and terrorism are
not absurd. Yet rather than use
his column to share why these
important issues led to his
vote for Trump, Mahon delineates winners and losers in a
manner more appropriate to a
Facebook post than newspaper
column.

BC Family Delivers Christmas Toys

By Dan Guarino

A new toy can often be a

source of Christmas joy for a
child. For a child battling cancer, it can mean the world.
For four years Anna OConnor, now age 12, along with her
sisters, Amanda, 10, and Alyssa,
17 age, and her mom, have been
gathering piles of toys each holiday season to bring Christmas
to those children.
Mom Debbie OConnor explains, Our daughter Anna was
diagnosed with leukemia in 2010.
One year around Christmas time,
we were leaving the hospital and
she was concerned that her friends
upstairs and the other children
would not be getting a visit from
Santa Claus. It was a heartbreaking reality that they were not going
home for Christmas.
Anna was not ready to leave
it at that. We talked about it
on the ride back. We needed to
make sure the children on Med
4 (the childrens cancer ward at
the Steven and Alexandra Cohen Childrens Medical Center)

Sisters Anna and Amanda OConnor.

got toys for Christmas. When we

got home we posted on Facebook and the response and help
we got was amazing.
Each year that response has
gotten bigger and bigger. Last
year we collected 692 brand
new toys, OConnor said. The
toys go to (the hospitals) Hematology/Oncology Department
and we also give to the Ronald
McDonald House next door because we collect so much!
Those wishing to help can donate new unwrapped toys for a
boy or girl of any age, or a stuffed
animal, up to Saturday, December
17. They can be left in a box on the
OConnor residence front porch at
35 West 10th Road in Broad Channel. Or you can bring them to the
Grassy Point Bar and Grill, 18-02

T

versity

Cross Bay Boulevard, any time on

Friday, December 9, and get a free
drink for your kindness. Debbie
OConnor will personally be there
from 7 p.m. on.
BCs Ruffle Bar sponsored
a toy drive event on Saturday,
November 29. Thanks to Joann
Heaphy, instead of doing a grab
bag North Channel Yacht Club
members will be donating to
the toy drive. The Broad Channel Athletic Club will also be
collecting toys, even at the community tree lighting at their field
on Sunday, December 11.
Anna and Amanda get excited when people stop by,
OConnor said. We count every
gift, write their names in a book,
and include every person's
name in a personal card on the
day of delivery. It's special, because we know how it feels.
My husband, Shawn, and I are
really blessed. Weve got good, kind
children who would help anyone
that needed it. Their hearts are big
and every year they work hard.
Currently the OConnor home
is looking more and more like San

tas workshop, as toys are piled and

separated. Boxes of trucks and cars,
bags of toys and all kinds of new
playthings continue to arrive regularly. One little boy, Thomas, even
offered his beloved stuffed animals
to give to the children in need, and
offered to give his own money to
buy them toys.
Meanwhile the OConnors are
also thankful for their own gifts.
Our daughter will be five
years in remission this April
2017. This year is special. This
five year mark is something
we have heard about for a long
time in the cancer world. Five
year remission is big. So, God
has given my family the only gift
that matters-healthy children.
Debbie OConnor notes, My
children, Shawn and I have walked
this path that these children and
families (battling with cancer)
have to now. And it is not fun, especially during the holidays.
If we can make them happy
even for a day, it was worth it.
And a donated toy for a child
this Christmas can make all the
difference in the world.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING BROAD CHANNEL!

idents for each other, our town
and our environment. It is this
strong sense of caring that binds
all of us together as a community.
This sense of caring has served our
town well since 1875 but is probably best exemplified by the devastation wrought by Superstorm
Sandy back in October of 2012. In
the space of but a few hours, the
waters of the Atlantic Ocean surged
into Jamaica Bay and rolled across
our island transforming the vibrant
21st century town of Broad Channel into an early 1800s coastal
village lacking power, communication, transportation, fuel, sanitation, food, habitable living space,
churches and schools. The realization slowly dawned on all of us that
not only had we suffered incredible
individual losses, we had also lost
what most of us hold most dear
that which keeps us anchored to
our island community our town.
Although the Thanksgiving
immediately following Sandy
was celebrated as best we could
with shared turkey dinners at the
American Legion it was perhaps
a holiday more memorable than
those past as each of us had the

opportunity to realize just how

much we had to be thankful for
as we prepared to pull together to
restore our community!
And pull together as a community we did! Together we shared
laughter, tears, frustration, elation,
sorrow, hope, food, drink, showers, towels, soap, clothes, money,
tools and much more. But most
importantly, together we endured
that disaster and came away from
the shared experience with a new
sense of hope and purpose. Four
years later as we all celebrate
Thanksgiving this week in 2016 we
should all be thankful and proud
of the fact that, regardless of any
adversity thrown our way, we remain a united, strong and caring
community, very much alive with
the hopes and aspirations of all
our residents.
Although I, like many of you,
may often take this grand, old
town of ours for granted I think on
this Thanksgiving Day our small
island community on the bay deserves a special shout out.
Happy Thanksgiving Broad
Channel! Why would anyone want
to live anywhere else?

60

ty

In Broad Channel, as anywhere

that people celebrate Thanksgiving, thoughts of our families are
foremost in our minds. What
makes our community special is
the fact that we tend to view our
little community on the bay not
simply as a neighborhood but as
our "home" and our friends and
neighbors as extended family.
Hard to believe in this day and
age but Thanksgiving in Broad
Channel still remains a family-centric holiday consisting of
a day of humble introspection

with an accompanying acknowledgement of and real appreciation for the myriad of blessings
we all enjoy. Okay, don't get me
wrong, I'm not trying to imply
that Thanksgiving celebrations
in the Channel are a "Mayberry
RFD" affair but unlike many other communities, we continually
struggle to ward off the otherwise widespread transformation
of Thanksgiving into a "gateway
commercial holiday," almost indistinguishable from the following day's ("Black Friday") start of
a frenzied and seemingly endless
number of holiday sales. We make
an effort to maintain our comfortable niche on the Thanksgiving celebration scale which leans
more towards Norman Rockwell
rather than Norman Bates.
Oftentimes it's hard to explain
to those who do not live here exactly what it is that makes our
small town so unique. I always
tell those who are curious enough
to inquire that without a sense of
caring, there can be no sense of
community. Those of us who live
here can appreciate the extensive
sense of caring shared by all res-

DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

CIRCULATION
By Peter Galvin, MD

In his 1862 thesis Maurice

Raynaud first described the
symptoms of a disease eventually named for him. At first
it was called Raynauds Disease although this was subsequently changed to Raynauds Phenomenon when it
was found that the symptoms
sometimes were linked to other diseases. It occurs in three
to five percent of the population and is more common in
women. When exposed to cold
or stress the fingers, toes and
sometimes the tip of the nose
turn pale white. Once warming occurs this is followed by a
deep blue or purple shade and

severe pain, which can last 15

to 20 minutes after re-warming. Secondary Raynauds
has been linked to connective tissue diseases like lupus,
scleroderma and Sjogrens
Syndrome, vascular diseases,
some cancers and hypothyroidism. Primary Raynauds
is diagnosed in the absence of
other diseases. Surveys have
shown that 30 to 50 percent of
those with primary Raynauds
have first-degree relatives
with it suggesting an as-yet
undiscovered genetic abnormality. Primary Raynauds
starts at an early age, usually
between 15 and 30.
The circulation in the areas
of the body affected by Ray-

The Rockaway Times

nauds is very different than

the rest of the body. These
parts of the body have numerous arteriovenous anastomoses, or connections between
the arteries and veins. These
connections control responses to temperature changes.
When exposed to cold, normal A-V connections close
allowing more blood to reach
the capillaries in the fingertips. This is why normal fingers and toes turn red when
exposed to cold. In Raynauds
these connections stay open
and the capillaries constrict,
thereby cutting off the blood
circulation to the fingertips.
When exposed to heat the
connections open allowing
faster dissipation of heat.
The best treatment for Raynauds is avoidance of cold
and rapid temperature shifts.
Dressing warmly in winter
including heavy gloves and
socks is important. Likewise,
avoid quickly entering a cold
air-conditioned building on a
hot day. As mentioned above,
stress can bring on an attack
of Raynauds, so avoidance of

stress helps (easier said than

done though). Cigarette smoking should be discontinued.
Some medications can aggravate this disorder, for example
sympathomimetics (ephedra,
pseudoephedrine [Sudafed]),
ADHD medications (Adderal)
and medications used to treat
migraines. Estrogen, caffeine
and beta blockers are thought
to also aggravate Raynauds,
but definitive links have not
been found so far. Treatment
with medications like calcium-channel blockers (i.e. amlodipine) and other medications has shown mixed results.
If you think you or someone
you know has Raynauds phenomenon, get to your doctor for a checkup. One study
found that almost 40 percent
of those thought to have primary Raynauds were subsequently diagnosed with a
connective-tissue disease. A
simple blood test can tell the
difference.

Hung With Care for a Cause

By Katie McFadden

Twas the night before Thanksgiving, when all through the bar,
all the creatures were stirring,
reuniting from near and far. The
stockings for a cause were hung
with care, as customers donated
their fair share.
Its that time of year again, the
season of giving, and local bars
and restaurants are encouraging customers to participate in
Stockings for a Cause. For the
fifth year in a row, local Eugene
Brennan, owner of the Park Avenue Tavern, is orchestrating this
festive fundraiser to brighten a
wounded warriors holiday.
Each year, several bars and
restaurants hang Stockings for
a Cause. Any customer that donates $20 has their name put on
a stocking, which is hung somewhere in the establishment for
the holiday season. The tradition
starts on Thanksgiving Eve and
continues through Christmas.
This started five years ago in
my restaurant when we wanted
to decorate the bar. We thought

of hanging stockings and getting

our customers involved by putting their names on them. With
all the bad going on in the world,
we thought we could do a little
good in Park Avenue by having

wounded warrior each year,
Brennan said. Each year, Brennan selects one person to benefit as opposed to a charity. I

thought it would be a great way

to impact one person. Theres
a lot of great charities out there
but they have a lot salaries and
other engines attached to them.
This is a very tangible cause. Its
a way for us to brighten up an individuals spirits when they need
it most.
This year that warrior in need
is Brandon Myers. Myers, 22,

he had a higher calling and decided to become a Navy Seal,
Brennan said. While in Basic

PHOTO?

SLOW ROASTED
CHICKEN WITH
VEGETABLES
By Sharon Feldman

Serves: 6

By Emil R. Lucev Sr. & his daughter

Katie Lucev

Today we have an old Sepia-tone photo of South West

End Avenue in Old Rockaway
Park. Rockaway Streets were
given numerical designations

in about 1920, and West End

Avenue became Beach 122nd
Street.
This picture is of the beach
side of 122nd Street showing an
unpaved road. The two dark roof
structures to the left of center are
house numbers 171 and 177.

Ingredients:
2 medium carrots, halved
lengthwise and cut into 3 inch
pieces
2 celery ribs, halved, and cut
into 3 inch pieces
8 small red potatoes, quartered
2/4 teaspoon salt, divided
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 medium lemon, halved
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 broiler/fryer chicken (3-4
pounds)
1 tablespoon dried rosemary, crushed
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 tablespoon olive oil
1-1/2 teaspoons paprika

The Rockaway Times

Directions:
Place carrots, celery and potatoes in a 6 quart slow cooker;
toss with teaspoon salt and
pepper. Place lemon halves
and garlic in chicken cavity.
Tuck wings under the chicken; tie the drumsticks together.
Place chicken over the vegetables in slow cooker, breast
side up. Mix rosemary, lemon
juice, oil, paprika and remaining salt. Rub over chicken.
Cook covered, on low 6-8
hours. Or until temperature
reads 170 175 degrees and
vegetables are tender.
Remove chicken to a serving
platter; tent with foil. Let stand
15 minutes before carving.

Magic And Burlesque At RBSC

By Dan Guarino

Maybe you've tried shopping on Black Friday. Maybe

you've tried eating all those
leftovers. Well, how about trying something completely different?
On Saturday night, November 26 check out the
Rockaway Beach Surf Club
as they present Cardones
Beach Bunny Burlesque.
RBSC is located at 302 Beach
87th, right at the corner of
Rockaway Freeway, and the
show starts at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, and there is
no cover or drink minimum.
The show is hosted by
master magician, promoter
and showman Adam The
Amazing Cardone. Known
for his freewheeling magic
tricks and standout escape
artist antics, he first played
the RBSC several years ago,
performing as part of a circus cabaret which highlighted an artistic exhibition
dedicated to Playland and
Rockaways long amusement park history.
What can people expect
next Saturday at RBSC? A
really fun show that features
magic, great drinks, and
NYCs best burlesque acts.
The audience, while adult,
typically spans the ages and
brings people together for
a rowdy but playful night
out. Its also both men and
women, Cardone points
out. Lots of couples on
dates come out. You would
never go to a strip club with
your significant other, but to
a burlesque show, yes!! It's
very different.
Host Cardones magic and
escapism will introduce and
bookend performing artists
Lilin Lace, Velvetina Taylor and Penny Wren, all of
whom are well-known on
the citys burlesque circuit.
Each will bring an impressive athletic agility, a plethora of colorful costumes,
daring dance routines, comedy, personality and a variety of music including rock
and roll, surf rock and more
to entertain their audience.
I had no idea what to ex-

pect, one man said who attended one of the first packed
shows at the Surf Club, but
it was just a really wild, fun,
entertaining show!
Burlesque itself dates
to the 1860s, when Lydia
Thompson and her British
Blondes brought an irreverent English flair to American variety stage shows in
costumes considered very
revealing for the time.
As Cardone noted in an
earlier interview, In the
old days a burlesque show
featured striptease but it
also had comedy and variety show elements in the
show. Modern burlesque
dancersare there to put
on an entertaining show
that features amazing costumes, a bit of comedy and
excellent skills at striptease.
Burlesque has become very
popular in all the major cities and I think its popularity
has grown because it's not a
guys night out thing anymore. Men and women can
watch the show together
and laugh, feel a bit naughty
and enjoy it.
I and Bradach Walsh, one
of the owners of the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, had
been wanting to bring a bit
of the Manhattan night life
that I am a part of out here
to Rockaway, he said. So,

in late November 2015, they

presented what was billed as
the first burlesque show in
Rockaway in modern times.
I think we did four shows
last winter/spring, he said.

Ever since the last one people have been asking when
is the next one!!! The performers love performing out
here too.
The audiences out here
are really amazing! Theyre
really receptive, kind, and
full of excitement. A performers dream!
Besides becoming a Rockaway
regular,
Cardone,
along with Walsh, created,
organized and launched
the first annual Rockaway
Beach Sideshow and Strongman Festival this past summer on the boardwalk.
But for now he is facing
his own challenges when
it comes to the upcoming
Cardones Beach Bunny
Burlesque show at the Surf
Club.
The magic I do fits into
the type of show its featured
in. For burlesque shows it
needs to be loud, over the
top and good because, he
explains, I am competing
with pretty girls!

Speaking words of gratitude

will bring you happiness and
your world will become a bit
brighter. You will begin to see
things in a different way and
your burden will lighten. We are
here in gratitude for the blessing of life. Looking around we
see love in all things. Sometimes
we need to be reminded of all
the good things we have in this
world. Start by greeting each
day with a breath of fresh awareness. When you awaken, find
the time to say a simple thank
you for this day. Begin by caring deeply and let that carry you
through your day. There may be

health of others and our Mother

Share your ideas and learnings with one another. Begin
to remove the obstacles that
darken or cloud your vision for
a better world. Go outside for a
walk, even if only for five minutes. It will brighten and refresh your day. The ocean air is
natural medicine for the body
and soul. Find strength and
integrity to endure from deep
inside the well within your inner landscape. Show up at the
community meetings to serve

the greater of all, not just your

own personal agenda. Lend a
helping hand to someone in
need. Be grateful to be able help
someone less fortunate than
yourself. The more you give, the
more you will receive.
As I was walking down my
block one of my neighbors, Rosie Conlon, gifted me with a
beautiful angel book with inspirational quotes and messages
for the day. In her gift bag there
was a beautiful tiny gratitude
angel. So very special and close
to my heart. She did this simply because she was grateful for
reading this column, Be Well, Be
Happy, and felt I would appreciate something dear to her heart.
I was so touched by her generosity and thought to myself, how
blessed are we to live in Rockaway Beach with such amazing,
generous human beings. So
thankful to live in Rockaway
Beach when there are angels
everywhere. It was her grateful
heart that really made me smile
inside. I am thankful to have
Rosie as a neighbor and friend.
She is the reason I am writing
this column today.

The Rockaway Times

As I opened the book the first
quote that came to me was, I
remember to breathe throughout the day. I remind myself that
I can choose peace, no matter
what is going on around me.
Whenever I desire, I can retreat
to that quiet place within simply
by closing my eyes.
Thank you Rosie, thank you
Rockaway, thank you Paulette
for your guidance and sharing the column among other
things, thank you Patrick, my
loving husband, for your love
and support, thank you for my
family, friends and neighbors,
thank you for my yoga community, you make me so happy and
finally thank you, Kevin, for believing in this wellness column,
Be Well, Be Happy.
We are grateful to all who read
The Rockaway Times. When we
are thankful, we have joy and
energy flows freely. Thank you
for another beautiful day on
Earth. Lets take this opportunity to make the Earth a better
place for our children to inherit.
May you all be happy, healthy,
safe and live with ease. Happy
Thanksgiving.

house. Grey responded to
the crash of Flight 587 in
Belle Harbor on November
12, 2001. He received numerous Unit Citations and
the Medal of Exceptional
Bravery throughout his time
in Broad Channel. In 2008,
he went on to volunteer for
West Hamilton Beach. He
wanted a change of scenery and he couldnt perform
firefighting duties anymore
because of his physical injuries, so he went on to be the
dispatcher for West Hamilton Beach, McIntyre said.
It was a no brainer that Grey
was elected as President of
the Volunteer Firemans Association of the City of New
York, representing seven of
the NYC Volunteer Fire Departments.
Grey made a large impact during his life that was
cut short. His deep, raspy

brotherhood will be sorely missed amongst us all

the BCVFD said in a statement. Hes gone way too
soon, Kalisak said. Every
time I call a cab, I wait to
hear his voice or I wait for
him to walk through the
door, break my chops and
order a beer, McGee said at
Healys Pub.
Grey is survived by his
father, Fred Grey, mother,
Maureen Gallagher (Eddie),
and daughter, Isabelle. A
wake was held for Grey at

by an interment at Calvary

Preventing
Leaks and Water
Damage

By Artie Wallace

There are many ways water

from rain or melting snow can
creep into your home.
This week we are going to
focus on flat roofs. Slant roofs
have their issues, but flat roofs
are more prone to problems.
On flat roofs the common issues are flashing around parapet walls, sky lights and vent
stacks as well as cracks in the
roof coating. Here is how you
can resolve these issues before
they become water leaks.
First thing to do is inspect
the roof. On a clear day walk
around the entire roof and look
for any signs of cracks or openings.
Second thing is to seal any
openings in the roof and/or
seams near parapet walls, skylights and vent stacks. Do this
by applying flashing cement

covering all roof penetrations.

While you have the flashing cement out, coat any seams that
are open or cracking. Apply the
flashing using plastic disposable scrapers.
Third thing you will want to
do is apply a coat of a sealing
product to the entire roof. I
recommend using Aluminum
Coating. Just be sure to mix it
real good. You can buy a mixer
that attaches to a drill for under $20.00. To apply the coating, use a cheap push broom
and brush it covering the roof.
It is best to allow the roof to dry
overnight and apply a second
coat.
Fourth and final step is to
inspect the roof again. You
will probably find that there
This applies to all flat and
are spots you missed. Go back semi-flat roofs, houses, garagwith the Aluminum Coating es, etc.
and give the spots a good once
over.

Giving Thanks With Vets In BC

to serve these men and women who have served us.
And that was something to
be thankful for.

By Dan Guarino

Thanksgiving arrived early for some 30 to 40 veterans

this week, courtesy of the volunteers of VFW Prince-Wynn
Post 260.
On Sunday, November 20,
they welcomed disabled vets
from the St. Albans medical
center and elsewhere for a
Thanksgiving dinner at the
post on Shad Creek Road in
Broad Channel. Dozens attended in wheelchairs and
were accompanied by aides
who were also treated as
guests.
Members of the VFWs
Auxiliary served a traditional dinner with all the
trimmings. The posts own
superior chefs were preparing turkeys and ham from
7 a.m. on, and many of the
days other dishes and desserts were homemade. The
afternoon feast included all
trimmings, such as two kinds
of gravy, collard greens, mac

and cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green

bean casserole, fresh pumpkin pies, cupcakes, spinach
squares, stuffing, rolls, salad, coffee, soda and tea. A
line of servers filled plates or
brought them to seated vets.
Acoustic music was provid-

ed by Eddie Joe McCabe and

Dan Nice, of the group Walker
and the Brother of the Grape.
The vets were also treated
to a lively horse race, with
VFW volunteers and helpers
standing in for horses. Newly
elected NY State Assemblywoman Stacey Pheffer Amato and her mother, Queens
County Clerk Audrey Pheffer
also stopped by to sit, visit
and chat with the veterans.
Later, all joined in to sing a
heartfelt rendition of God
Bless America.
After all the vets were
boarded back onto to special
buses to take them home,
one VFW volunteer said, I
truly felt humbled to be able

STOCKINGS HUNG

he took a turn for the worst and
fell during one of the obstacle
courses. During this fall he broke
one of his vertebrae and is now
paralyzed from the waist down.
He fought to remain part of the
Seal community for 12 months
even with his limited capacity.
Brennan learned of Myers story through a friend in San Diego
who is a retired Navy Seal. Brandons very excited, but hes very
humbled and almost feels like
he doesnt deserve it because it
didnt happen while overseas
but I think there is no one more
deserving than this warrior this
year, Brennan said.
Brennan has set out with a
goal of $50,000 for Myers, which
would be the most money
ever raised for Stockings for
a Cause. The big goal may be
easily attainable as Stockings
for a Cause has grown into a
widespread mission. The original effort started at Brennans
Park Avenue Tavern, but soon
spread to other In Good Company establishments including Rockaways Bungalow Bar.

Now, all business or groups are

encouraged to join. So far the
local participating establishments include Bungalow Bar,
Jamesons and the Sugar Bowl
and Kennedys in Breezy Point.
But the effort goes far beyond
the peninsula. Im really excited to hit the ground running
and make Brandons Christmas
great. This year we have bars
from the tip of the peninsula to Manhattan and even San
Diego. Were pushing close to
50 bars and I think this is really
going to take off. With the right
help and social media, this is going to go somewhere big and Im
very excited, Brennan said.
Brennan plans to make the
movement more interactive by
encouraging people and businesses to share photos and videos of their stockings on social
media, along with the hashtag
#StockingsForACause. Any bars
or restaurants that are interested
in participating in Stockings for
a Cause can contact Brennan at
genobrennan@yahoo.com. Those interested in donating can go
to any of the participating bars or
restaurants.
