Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs:

My book will cost nothing to make. I will be creating my book digitally. I will be
using photoshop to create the illustration for my book as well as using fonts from
DaFonts to get the right style of font for my book. The DaFonts website is free
download. The original author of the Princess and the Pea died in 1875 so there
will be no copyright cost.
Available resources:

The sources I am using for my childrens book are; source images, computer,
photoshop and DaFonts.com. I will need internet access to get my source images
and to do some research on my book and to choose a font from DaFont.com. I will
need experience on photoshop to use the shape tool and rotoscoping and various
other techniques I will be using to create my book. I will be using PowerPoint to
store all my research and idea generations. I have a memory stick to save my
work and to

Quantity:

To start of with I will sell my books in a small patch of 100-150. If my book does
well and is popular, I will then release my book in patches of 1000. This is
because I do not want to risk dispatch a 1000 copies of book if they do not sell.
Audience and Target Market:

In my idea generation I spoke about my audience being 4/5 years old. My book
will appeal to both genders as I have made some changed to the original story.
This will stay the same, however, I am now looking at a wider target market for my
book as parents or grandparents may buy the book for their children. My target
audience will now be around 20-30 and 50-75 years olds. My book will appeal to
both young children and adults.
Quality Factors:

To make sure the quality is the highest it can be. I will stay motivated, as this will
help me to keep up with the quality of the book. I will also keep a back up of all my
work to do with every project in case it gets lost or corrupted. I will keep with the
time scale on the project, this is important as if I fall behind and spent to much
time doing the flat plan I wont have enough time to create some high quality test
pages. I will also keep to my plan and keep looking back to make sure the style is
consistence. I will also tell my story through picture as some children will not be
able to read yet. I will also make my characters relatable and loveable.

Codes of Practice:

If an author fails to deliver a completed manuscript according to the

contract or within the contracted period, the publisher may be entitled (inter
alia) to a refund of advances already paid on account. This is relevant to my
book as, if my book does not reach the deadline I will lose money on the book.
This also goes for my project as if I do not make the deadline I will have failed this
project If, by contrast, the work has not been produced in good faith and
with proper care, or the work does not conform to what has been
commissioned in terms of content, level and style, the publisher may be able
to reclaim the advance - This is relevant my book needs to be high quality or the
contractors have the right to discontinue working with me to get my book
published. This is also relevant as if I do not produce work to a high standard I will
not get a decent grade. If under the contract the author receives an outright
or single payment, but retains ownership of the copyright, the publisher
should be prepared to share with the author any income derived from a use
of the work - This would have been relevant, however, the original author to the
Princess and Pea passed away so there is no copyright allowance owed.

Regulation:

The regulations are important and must be followed exactly; this is to ensure the
safety of children. One regulation is if a book come with a teddy that teddy bear
must be child safety, parents must be aware of the age rating of the product to
deem whether it is safe for their child. However, I have designed my book to avoid
all regulations.
Copyright:

There are no copyright factors to my story. This is because the original author,
Hans Christen Andersen, passed away in 1875 so they will be no cost to the
author and I can manipulate the story to make it my own. All the images are my
own and the text is downloaded from a website that allows me to use it publicly
Ethical Issues:

My story has no ethical issues. I have added no beliefs or talked about any other
beliefs, culture, or personal opinions to my book. I have done this as I am creating
a childrens book that will appeal to a wide range of people no matter what there
beliefs or culture are. Adding theses would effect the productions.

Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you dont currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.

Health and safety:

Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we dont work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.
