Students Activity

e. Motivation
Since theres none, let us have a
riddle.
Direction: On your notebook, supply
the set on the following riddle.
1. I have all the colors in the
rainbow, except that indigo.
2. Im not male, what am I?
3. Its not liquid, then what is it?
4. If not vowels, then what letters?
5. If not Saturn, Mercury, and
Venus, then what are we?
6. What are not ber months?
7. Im not not happy. How do I
feel?

B. Presentation
Very good. This activity has something
to do with our lesson. Our lesson is
Universal Set.
Let us examine the colors. What are
the colors that you can see in the
rainbow?

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue,indigo,

violet

Very good. If the colors are the

elements, then the rainbow is our
universal set.

Universal set is the set consisting of all the

elements under consideration.

How about this example. What are the

planets in our solar system?
Very good. If the planets are the
elements, Solar System would be our
universal set. Based on our example,
what is universal set?
Very good. The symbol for universal
set is U. So, the universal set in our
first example is U= {Red, orange,
yellow, green, blue,indigo, violet}
How do we write the universal set of
the planets in our Solar System?
Very good. Do you have any question?
Since theres none, get your notebook
and solve the following.

Seatwork: Find U
1. Letters from a to i

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,

Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto
Universal set is the set consisting of all the
elements under consideration.

U={ Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter,

Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto}
None.
The union of Set A and Set B are
36,24,48,54,72,51,57,81,27,75,52,38,32,64
,74 because we combine all the elements
from sets A and B without repetitions.

None

D you have any question?

Since theres none, let us examine the

statement.
I love all the colors except for
blue and indigo. They are so
dark.
What colors did the person did not
love?

Blue and indigo

Red, orange, yellow, green, violet

Alright. Lets consider blue and indigo

as elements of Set A. What colors did
the person love?
How do you know?

Very good. These colors are the

compliment of Set A. It is written as
A={Red, orange, yellow, green,
blue,indigo, violet}
How about
I went to school everyday except on
Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

The days in a week.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

What is our universal set?

A={ Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.}

What day do I go to school?

The compliment of set A contains the

elements that belong to universal set but
do not belong to set A.

Suppose that Set A={ Monday,

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday}, what
is our A?

No

Very good. So based on our example,

how do we define Compliment of a
set?

The compliment would be infinite.

Very good. Can we have a compliment

without a universal set?
Why?
Very good. Always remember that
there must be a universal set in order
to have a compliment. Hence, set A +
A= U
Do you have any question?

None.

1. A B={2}
2. A B=
3. A B={n,o}

None.

Since theres none, solve this on your

notebook.
1. Find U if A={2,5,6,8} and
A={3,7,9}
2. Find A if U={d,e,f,g,h,j,l} and
A={d,f,h}
3. Find A if U={3,4,5,6,7,8,9} and
A={3,5,6,7,8,9}
Do you have any question?
Since theres none, get your notebook.
We will have an application.

C. Application
Direction: Read each situation carefully.
Identify what is asked, what are given,
set operation, illustration and answer.
1. In a group of 10 girls, 7 of them
ate burger and 3 ate pizza. If 2 of
them ate both burger and pizza,
how many of them neither eat
burger nor pizza?

Asked: how many of them neither eat

burger nor pizza
Given: U= group of 10 girls
A=7 of them ate burger
B=3 ate pizza
A B=2
Set Operation: intersection
Illustration:

(A U B) = 3
2. There were 50 students in a class.
15 students love Math, 10
students love Science, and 12
students love English. 5 students
love both Math and Science, 6
students love both Science and
English, and 7 students love both
Math and English. If 3 students
love Math, Science and English,
how many students love Math
alone?

Asked: How many students love Math

alone?
Given: Let U=50 students in a class
A=15 students love Math
B=10 students love Science
C=12 students love English
A B=5 students love both Math and
Science
B C=6 students love both Science and
English
A C=7 students love both Math and
English
A B C=3 students love Math, Science
and English
Set Operation: intersection

set without a universal set?

Precisely. Do you have any further
questions?
Since theres none, get one whole sheet
of paper. We will have a quiz.
E. Evaluation
I.Direction: Solve the following. Write
your answer only.
Given U={x|x is a number from 0 to 10}
A= {0,1,2,3,4}
B={3,5,7,8}
C={0,2,6,8}

II.Direction: Read each situation
carefully. Identify what is asked, what are
given, set operation, illustration and
answer.
1. In a group of 16 boys, 9 of them
play basketball. How many of
them do not play basketball?

No. Compliment indicates that there is a

universal set.
None.

1. (B)=3,5,7,8}
2. (B C)={0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7}
3. A U B={0,1,2,4,5,6,7,8,9,10}
4. B C=4
5. (AUBUC)={9}

Asked: How many of them do not play

basketball?

A=9 of them play basketball
Set Operation: compliment

2. In an organization, 10 members
are using SMART, 16 are using
GLOBE, and 13 are using ABSCBN
Mobile. 5 members are using both
SMART and GLOBE, 6 members
are using both GLOBE and
ABSCBN Mobile, 3 are using both

Answer:
A=7

the organization?
Given: Let A=10 members are using
SMART
B=16 are using GLOBE
C=13 are using ABSCBN Mobile

SMART and ABSCBN Mobile, 2

members are using all SMART,
GLOBE and ABSCBN Mobile, and 6
members do not have cellphone.
How many members are there in
the organization?

A B=5 members are using both SMART

and GLOBE
B C=6 members are using both GLOBE
and ABSCBN Mobile
A C=3 are using both SMART and
ABSCBN
A B C=2 members are using all
