Abstract

The study aimed to produce biodegradable plastic using breadfruit starch as its main
component. Breadfruit starch was mixed with water, vinegar, glycerol, and resin glue (Polyvinyl
acetate). The mixtures were then compressed and tested. Three formulations and trials were
made from the mixtures. The first formulation and trial contained 1 tsp of breadfruit starch was
mixed with 60 ml of water, 2 tsp. of vinegar, 1 tsp. of glycerol, 15 ml resin glue (Polyvinyl
acetate). The second formulation and trial contained 2 tsp. of breadfruit starch was mixed with 60
ml of water, 2 tsp. of vinegar, 1 tsp. of glycerol, 25 ml resin glue (Polyvinyl acetate). The third
formulation and trial contained 1.5 tsp. of starch was mixed with 60 ml of water, 2 tsp. of
vinegar, 1 tsp. of glycerol, 20 ml resin glue (Polyvinyl acetate). The last or third formulation and
trial exhibited the most desirable mechanical properties.
For its mechanical properties, it has been proven as biodegradable, had a favorable results
in the strong acid and base tests. The samples were found to be water-soluble. However, the
samples would not dissolve in ethanol, an organic solvent. Thus, it was recommended to replace
the resin glue with other binder.
