5 x 3 = 15

Comprehension I
Polar covalent molecules exhibit dipole moment. Dipole moment is equal to the product of charge
separation, q and the bond length d for the bond. Unit of dipole moment is debye. One debye is equal
to 1018 esu cm.
Dipole moment is a vector quantity. It has both magnitude and direction. Hence, dipole moment of a
molecule depends upon the relative orientation of the bond dipoles, but not on the polarity of bonds
alone. A symmetrical structure shows zero dipole moment. Thus, dipole moment helps to predict the
geometry of a molecules. Dipole moment values can be used to distinguish between cis-and transisomers; ortho-, meta- and para-forms of a substance, etc.

term

Constant a is measure of intermolecular interaction between gaseous molecules that gives rise to
non-ideal behaviour depends on how frequently any two molecules approach each other closely.
Another correction concerns the volume occupied by the gas molecules. In the ideal gas equation, V
represents the volume of the container. However, each molecule does occupy a finite, although small,
intrinsic volume, so the effective volume of the gas becomes V nb , where n is the number of moles of
the gas and b is a constant. The term nb represents the volume occupied by n moles of the gas.
Having taken into account the corrections for pressure and volume, we can rewrite the ideal gas equation
as follows:

Comprehension I
Consider the case of the collision of a ball with a wall. In this case the problem of collision can be
simplified by considering the case of elastic collision only. When a ball collides with a wall we can divide
its velocity into two components, one perpendicular to the wall and other parallel to the wall. If the
collision is elastic then the perpendicular component of velocity of the ball gets reversed with the same
magnitude.

The other parallel component of velocity will remain constant if wall is smooth.
Now let us take a problem. Three balls A and B and C are projected from ground with same speed at
same angle with the horizontal. The balls A, B and C collide with the wall during their flight in air and all
three collide perpendicularly with the wall as shown in figure.

(b) H A H B HC

(c) H A HC H B

(d) H A H B HC

71. If the time taken by the ball A to fall back on ground is 4 seconds and that by ball B is 2 seconds, then
the time taken by the ball C to reach the inclined plane after projection will be
(a) 6 s

(b) 4 s

(c) 3 s

(d) 5 s

72. The maximum height attained by ball A from the ground is

(a) 10 m

(b) 15 m

Comprehension II
A student performs a series of experiments to determine the coefficient of static friction and the
coefficient of kinetic friction between a large crate and the floor. The magnitude of the force of static
friction is always less than or equal to s N , where s denotes the coefficient of static friction, and N
denotes the normal force exerted by the floor on the crate: f s s N . Static friction exists only when the
crate is not sliding across the floor. The force of kinetic friction is given by f k k N where k denotes
the coefficient of kinetic friction. Kinetic friction exists only when the crate is sliding across the floor.
The crate has a mass 100 kg . In this situation, the normal force points upward.
Experiment-1
The student pushes horizontally (rightward) on the crate and gradually increases the strength of this
push force. The crate does not begin to move until the push force reaches 400 N.
Experiment-2
The student applies a constant horizontal (rightward) push force for 1.0 second and measures how far the
crate moves during that time interval. In each trial, the crate starts at rest, and the student stops pushing
after the 1.0 second interval. The following table summarizes the results.

74. In experiment-1 when the rightward push force was 50 N the crate didnt move. Why didnt it move?
(a) The push force was greater than the static frictional force on the crate
(b) The push force had the same strength as the gravitational force on the crate
(c) The push force was weaker than the static frictional force on the crate
(d) The push force had the same strength as the frictional force on the crate
