Lesson
Summary:

In this lesson children will learn what can be discovered when they dig, they will
also learn about the different types of rocks.

Estimated
Duration:

This lesson will take 1 hour and 40 minutes and I plan to do it in one morning. It is
broken down as follows: 10 minutes to watch a prezi on the 3 different types of
rocks, 15 minutes to read and discuss a book, 15 minutes to share rocks and
answer questions, 4 rotations of children at a sensory table, each group of 4
children will get 15 minutes to dig for rocks, there will be 10 minutes for a final
wrap up of this exercise.

What preparation is needed?

Gather materials, share the process with the teacher, read book
What materials will be used?
Rocks, fossils, beans, a sensory table, egg cartons, brushes, magnify glass, the book Sam
and Dave Dig a Hole, a lap top, a poster displaying rocks (children will match the rock they
find to poster), crayola model magic (to make fossil), plastic insects.
How will the learning environment be set up?
In addition to the digging activity there will be a fossil making and a drawing activity. I will
put the Crayola Model Magic on the art table, I will provide wax paper to put the models on,
I will provide plastic insects for the children to use to make fossils. The clay takes a day to
dry completely but the children can put the fossil on the drying rack and take them home
the next day.
After I read the book, show the Prezi and the rocks - the children who are waiting for their
rotation at the sensory table can draw pictures of the rocks or make a fossil.

Instructional Procedures:
I will first read the book Sam and Dave Dig a Hole which conveys the idea of what it means to dig.
I will then show the children a Prezi that features the 3 different types of rocks.
Then I will show them actual rocks that were found through digging. Allot: 15 Minutes
1. A fossil is a rock containing the preserved remains of a once living animal or plant. Flint is a
common rock that you might find in Ohio, Native American used flint to make weapons, I will show
them the arrowhead. Here is a rock that is called a quartz see how it sparkles? Some people use
quartz to make jewelry, fancy rings and necklaces can be made from this stone.
I will then ask them if they have ever heard of an archeologist? I will then describe what an archeologist
does and ask them if they would like to pretend to be a junior archeologist.
Steps:
What will the teacher do/say? What will the children do during the activity?
(Be sure to acknowledge how/when the concepts and objectives come to fruition in these steps.)
GROUP TIME
1. Read the book Sam and Dave Dig a Hole Allot: 15 Minutes
2. Watch a Prezi about the 3 types of rocks rocks, Allot: 10 Minutes
3. Show children different rocks and discuss what category of rock they fall into (refer back to prezi),
fossil, flint, crystal, explain that the world is covered in rock and that rocks form and break down
over time.
4. Let the children touch the rocks.
5. A fossil is a rock containing the preserved remains of a once living animal or plant. Flint is a
common rock that you might find in Ohio, Native American used flint to make weapons such as
arrowheads (show children arrowhead). Here is a rock that is called a quartz see how it sparkles?
Some people use quartz to make jewelry, fancy rings and necklaces can be made from this stone.
6. Discuss what an archaeologist does
7. Ask, do you want to be a jr. archaeologist for a while?
8. Explain the rotation method, let the children know that while they are waiting to dig for
their rocks they can make a fossil or draw a picture of a rock they saw today.
9. Chose first 4 students
10. Show the children the egg cartons and explain the process of cleaning rock and putting rock in
carton to preserve, show the children the magnify glass and demonstrate how to use
11. I will ask each student if they can match the rock to the picture of the rock on the poster and/or to
match it to the rock in the Prezi.
12. Work with students for 15 minutes and call next 4 student (total 4 groups of students)
13.Wrap up, I will say the following, Today we learned about all the wonderful things that can be found
when digging in the dirt! Next time you are playing outside you should try to find some cool rocks
and start your own collection. Allot: 10 Minutes

Extension
To learn more about rocks students can go to http://livingmontessorinow.com/montessorimonday-montessori-inspired-rocks-and-minerals-unit/.
This site will give students pictures of different rocks and more information about the
characteristics of different rocks as well as where the rocks can be found.
Differentiated Instructional Support: For children that are already familiar with rocks I would
focus more time on matching the rock to the chart or working on matching the rocks that we
have in the classroom to those featured in the Prezi pausing I would hold up a particular rock
and match it to the rock being discussed in the prezi.

For students struggling to identify the names of rocks I will focus more on helping them find
the rocks in the beans and helping them describe the shapes and colors of the rocks.

Vocabulary: Rocks, fossils, archeology, arrowheads, digging, flint, quartz, Native Americans

For teachers

Make sure that you have a lap top and the Prezi ready, also note that during the
matching activity you can use the Prezi to see how the rocks are described as
another resource for the students.

For students

Students will need to have access to one laptop to watch the Prezi.
