Gun Control
Gun control is a sensitive topic to talk about. Its a conversation that causes great
controversial debates, as if there is no end to the conversation. Many reports have been written
up either favoring gun control or opposing gun control. Which is why we should have an open
mind while taking forth a set of new opinions.
As I did my research regarding gun control I kept in mind to be open minded. I also kept
in mind to go into my political issue without any type of biases. By doing this Im not only
helping myself, but my political issue as well.
In greater depth, my political issue of choice is gun ownership in the United States. It is
stated in The United States Constitution, Amendment 2 that we as United States citizens have the
right to A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State, the right of the
people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. In other words, citizens of the United
States of America are granted the right to bear arms. Theres two sides to this political issue,
those who are in favor for more gun control and those who are opposed for an even greater gun
control.
Those who are in favor for more gun control believe that through more gun control we
would be guaranteed a safer nation. A nation with laws favoring stricter gun control laws will

guarantee the safety of our homes and of our neighbors. Stricter gun control means a nation with
less crime.
On the other hand, we have those who are against an even greater gun control. These
people believe that with more guns comes a greater sense of safety among people. A community
with guns is almost always guaranteed safety because they are granted the power to prevent any
type of harm presented to them or those around them.
The argument that I found more persuasive, was the argument that was given by our
President Barack Obama and our Vice President Joe Biden. I found our President and Vice
Presidents argument to be persuasive because he gave evidence proving that gun dealers dont
enforce the law that requires licensed gun dealers to run background checks.
It was stated in the article that 40 percent of all gun purchases are conducted without a
background checks. President Obama believed that universal background checks is essential to
solving the problem regarding the gun violence in our nation. President Obama isnt the only one
who believes this, according to a survey 70 percent of the National Rifle Associations members
believe in this statement as well.
President Obamas article was persuasive because he believed that banning military style
weapons will solve gun violence and so did Ronald Reagan, a former President of the United
States. Ronal Reagan showed his support for gun control by writing to Congress stating that they
should listen to the American public and to the law enforcement community and support a ban
on the further manufacture of military-style weapons. Military style weapons were designed to
shoot a massive amount of bullets at a great speed. These type of guns ensure the owner of the

gun to do as much damage as possible in a short amount of time. A gun of this caliber shouldnt
be allowed in the streets of the American people.
After reading up both articles, one from President Obama/Vice President Joe Biden and
one from Columnist Jeffrey Goldberg, I found myself agreeing more with President Obama and
his claims. I stand behind President Obama. I do believe that through stricter laws and through
enforcing these laws we will see a bettered nation.
Gun control will help our nation and its problem surrounding gun violence. We are losing
many innocent lives because we dont do things such as universal background. Its unfortunate
that the families who lost a loved due to gun violence arent seeing the changes that they wish to
see. They deserve better, they deserve to see change.
We should make it our moral responsibility to not only bring about something good to
these families, but also to this nation. This will be done through assuring that we will see a
decrease of gun violence through proposing the laws that President Obama suggested. By doing
this, our generation will be paving the way for future generations, guaranteeing them a society
with little to no gun violence.
It can be done through cooperation from both sides of the political issue. We need to
restore peace in our communities and in our nation. We should all work towards a brighter future,
something that everyone can live with.
