cially in our era, that in the vocal attack, the first note is
produced/not produced, since the lips remain closed; for
the second, the mouth scarcely opens, starting and stop
ping like a breath; the third note, which coincides with the
first word of the poem, is also the first to be sung, emerging
with all the more force since it is first to leave the nonmu
sical sphere. So there was something like a reticence (a
shame?) to be sung, to reconcile song and word and the

make use of itself, that does not say things already
present, that is not the tireless come-and-go of Socratic
dialogue, but speech like that of the Lord of Delphi,
speech that is the voice that has said nothing yet,

So comes it that, in the firmness that draws it
up and maintains it in constant insurrection, it links
the poem to the greatest risk, it entrusts it to this risk,
and this confidence in "the cons iderable danger," by
which our own situation is clarified, appoints poetry
to the adventure it must essentially be, when it ex
poses itself, without guarantee and without certainty,
to the freedom of what is still only yet to come.
Dense speech, closed in on its own anxiety,
that calls out to us and drags us ahead, so that it
sometimes seems to join poetry to ethics, and to tell
us what is expected of us, but that is because it is itself

dividing society not into good and evil, but into rea
sonable and unreasonable, allowed us to recognize the
impurities of reason and the ambiguous relationships
that power-here, a sovereign power-would maintain
with whatever there is that is most divided, while still
letting it be understood that it would not be so easy for
it to reign without dividing. The important thing is in
fact this division; the important thing is exclusion it
self-not what it is that one excludes or divides. Finally,
what a strange thing history is, if a simple decree can
overturn it, without great battles or important mon
archic disputes. This dividing, which is in no way
an act of mean-spiritedness, intended to punish dan
gerous beings because they have been determined to be
asocial ( idle, poor, debauched, foul-mouthed, extrava
gant, their heads empty or mad)-this dividing, then,
through an ambiguity even more formidable, has to
attend to the excluded by giving them medical care,
food, blessing. To prevent the sick from dying in the
street, the poor from becoming criminals just to sur
vive, the debauched from perverting the pious by
flaunting bad habits and giving them a taste for them,
all that is not detestable, but marks some progress, the
point of departure for a change that educators will
deem excellent.
