The thermal contribution during welding is influenced by the pre-heating temperature, interpass temperature, voltage,
current and speed of the welding. The thermal contribution shall not be too high to do not cancel the advantageous effects
given by the austempering and shall not even be too low in order to avoid hardening risks. The pre-heating, which is profitable
also for the hydrogen elimination, shall be applied to avoid hardening risks.
When the welding get cool, it is opposed by the surrounding cooled metallic mass, so that sometimes it cracks.
Greater is the joint thickness, higher are the stresses sustained by the welding bead.
If the connection area is pre-heated, the cooling gradient is slower and the shrinkages are much controlled and regular.
Do not exceed with the welding of the structural steels; except strong constraints up to thickness 25mm, the pre-heating
shall be avoided by assuring that the joint is well clean and dry.
The thermal cycle severity decreases when the specific thermal contribution and the pre-heating temperature increase,
while it increases depending on the pieces thickness. This could be represented by the formula t8/5 i.e. for certain
points of the joint, by the time necessary to cool and reach a temperature of 500C from 800C.
This parameter is very important when we study the metallurgic transformations which occurs to the steel
during cooling process.
Thereunder are listed some parameters extracted by the analysis performed by a research group on steel type StE690 and T1.
