Digital Graphic Narrative Planning

Use this booklet to help structure your planning and collate your planning documents.

Considerations:
There are lots of things to consider in this project. Fill out each section in detail to show you have thought about each one. You
should imagine that this is a live project, so considerations like cost, quantity and codes of practice must be thought about in that
context rather than just as a college project.
Costs: My childrens book doesnt have any costs. The college has all the resources I need to make my book.

Available resources: Computers, Photoshop, Internet connection, Paper and Pens.

Quantity: I would like my book to be mass marketed around the UK. This would require mass production
technique such as a production line. The estimated amount I would like to produce would be 10,000. I would
only want to market this to the British isles because it its a traditional English folk tale and is therefore more
suitable for a British audience.

Audience and Target Market: My target market/audience is Children from the ages of 4-8. It could also be
suitable for children older then 8 but only if it interested them. It has some darker elements then traditional
childrens books so it could also appeal to the parents at and average age of 25-35.

Quality Factors: Some factors that could affect the quality of my book are; motivation, not sticking to my
plans, distractions and file management. Due to constantly working on the book I could lose motivation at
some points through out the two-week period I will be making it. If I do not stick to the plans I have created
then this may make me stray off course and wasting time creating a page the does fit with my book or that I
dont like. I could get distracted by other people or outside sources and this would reduce the quality of my
work so keeping distractions to a minimum is a priority. File management is one of the most important things
that could affect my quality because if I do my work then lose the files then at the end of the two-weeks then I
have very little time to make the pages again so my quality will be lessened.
Codes of Practice: The codes of practice are set rules that how publishers should interact with authors. It
covers a range of legal and financial issues, which are not relevant in this project.

Regulation: Any books falling under the definition of a toy will have to be compliant with the new Toy Safety
Directive 2009/48/EC if sold on the European market. Books that would fit the definition of a toy would be
books such as pop up books. As my book will not be a pop up book or fall under the definition of a toy this
regulations do not apply to me.

Copyright: Due to my story being a folk tale therefore very old the original author is dead and because this
was more then 100 years ago there is no copyright for my story. This means I will not have to pay for the
rights to use this particular story. The rights are free to use for everyone. This is why there are many variations

of old fairy tales and folklores.
Ethical Issues: There are no real ethical issue in my book. The only thing that could be consider a ethical
issue in opinion is that fact the main character (who is male) is looking for a wife that suits his needs. However
this is very minor, it is how the story goes traditionally and it is what would have happened and what did
happen in the 15th century, which is the time period the story, is set.

Resources:
A successful project relies on good planning. Considering all the resources you will need for a project and then assessing which
you already have and which you need will help ensure you are ready to start your project.
If there is a resource you dont currently have, then consider how you are going to get it before you go in to production.

Production Schedule:
Delivering your project on time is vital. In order to do this, you need a solid plan of action. This will help you divide up your work in
to manageable chunks to be tackled one at a time. It will also allow you to plan which tasks need to be done in which order. It will
also allow you to track your progress each day. If you are falling behind, you will need to modify the way you work. If you work
faster than expected, you can clearly see what the next steps you need to take are.
Each session is a half day of college.
Session 1:

Creating my main character, who is male. (This may take two lessons)

Creating the other main character, who is female. (This may take two lessons)

Create a horse for the second page.

Session 2:
Create the first page. (Outdoor scene) (Could take two sessions)

Then add the text from the script onto the text page to go along with the corresponding page.

Session 3:

Create the second page. (Outdoor/ Meeting scene) (Could take two sessions)

Session 10:
Evaluate work and correct any mistakes in the text or pages.

Health and safety:

Your health and safety and that of those around you is very important. Just like in industry, an accident could prevent you from
working. Whilst we dont work in a highly dangerous environment, there are still risks. Some are short term, such as trips and
spillages whilst others, such as long term damage to eyesight or back problems, may affect you much later in life.
Consider the risks based on the activities you will be undertaking during the project. Explain how you could prevent them from
happening.
Ensure you reference appropriate pieces of legislation, design to protect people at work.

Health and Safety Issue

A health and safety issue could be loose wires and

cables form laptops that could be in use. It is possible for
someone to trip over these wires and hurt him or herself.

How can you prevent it?

I cannot personally prevent this but the people who use
laptops and leave them out should put them and the wires
back. It is also up to the person walking to actually look
where they are going and not trip over.

Another health and safety issue could be people leaving

their bags not under their desk but in the middle of the
room. They are also a trip hazard for people who dont
look where they are going.

I cannot personally prevent this but the people who dont

put their bags under the desk should do and people
should look where theyre going.

People could spill the water they bring into the lass to
drink on the computers or the other electrical systems.
This can cause harm and be a danger to the person who
spilled the water and other people as well.

To prevent this people should make sure that their water

is fully sealed before putting it down were it could get
knocked over.

Plugging too many leads and cables into the same

sockets can cause that socket to overload and can cause
a fire hazard.

Use less extensions leads.
